Attendance Policy
Chronic Absenteeismis defined as missing 10% or more school days within a school year. Attendance regulations in Virginia are covered by Code of Virginia, Section 22.1-254, requiring compulsory education for children. In working to ensure our students attend school and receive the finest education possible, Marshall High School utilizes a tiered intervention strategy to aid and encourage full attendance:
- 5 Unexcused Absences: Student will be required to meet with their counselor and/or the Dean of Students to create an Attendance Contract.
- 10 Absences (Excused or Unexcused): Student and parent/guardian will meet with the Dean of Students for an Attendance Conference.
- 15+ Absences: Student will be referred to the FCPS Attendance Intervention Specialist which may lead to a court referral.
For students who accrue numerous class and full day absences or excessive tardies, discipline can include but is not limited to:
- Afterschool Detention (Mondays 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm). Note: Late buses are provided on Mondays.
- Lunch Detention
- Alternative Instructional Arrangements (AIA)
- In-School Suspension (ISS)
- Restrictions from extracurricular activities
