What's Happening Mount Eagle May 15, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

This week, students in Grades 3–6 completed their Reading SOL assessments, and students in Grades 3 and 5 completed their Math SOLs. We are so proud of the hard work our students demonstrated throughout testing. They showed their thinking, persevered through challenging questions, and encouraged one another to do their very best. Their effort and positive attitudes have been wonderful to see.

Looking ahead to next week:

  • Grades 4 and 6 will take the Math SOL
  • Grade 5 will take the Science SOL

Some students may be eligible to retake an SOL assessment if they did not pass on their first attempt. If this applies to your child, their teacher will contact you directly with more information.

Families may now begin viewing available SOL scores through ParentVUE. Finalized SOL reports will be available at a later date.

We also have many exciting end-of-year events coming up, including our End-of-Year Dance on May 29 and Field Day on June 9. Parent volunteers are needed to help make these events a success! Please see the information below for details on how to volunteer and support these special activities for our students.

Thank you for your continued support in helping students arrive at school rested, prepared, and confident during this important testing season.

Warmly, Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

Intentions for 2026-27 School Year

Even if you're not sure about your plans or are leaving, we need to hear from you.

In a few weeks, we will begin planning our class grouping for next school year. In order to ensure we have the best information, we need parents to do the following:

1. Let us know your intentions for next year by completing this form by Monday, May 18.

Complete it for each child that is currently at Mount Eagle in Grades PK-5. You do not need to complete it for your sixth grade child. If you say now that you are moving, but then your plans change over the summer, that's okay. You can let us know as soon as possible in the summer. We will have a spot for your child.

2. (Optional) Please share any information you feel will help with class groupings. If you have information you would like us to consider, please do so in the optional question in the form linked above. You can write in your home language. If you are requesting that your child be placed with a particular friend, please include at least 2 names. We do not take requests for a specific teacher. Instead, you are welcome to share particular traits that you feel would best support your child. Note that as a small school, we only have two classes at Grades 3-6, so requesting that your child be separated from another student may not be possible. Again, sharing this information is optional in the form. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Kirkland.

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage

Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.

📵We Are Phone-Free During School

As a reminder, FCPS is phone-free! For elementary school students, this means:

  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. At Fort Hunt, this begins when students enter the building in the morning.
  • Cell phones and personal devices (airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell).

If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office at 703-619-2600. Learn more about  FCPS’ cell phone and personal device policy . Also, view our  Media Balance and Well-Being Toolkit  for resources to help your child maintain a healthy and balanced relationship with technology at home

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year.  Our current absentee rate is 13.5%.

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

What's Happening Mount Eagle May 1, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful time at our Multicultural Night on May 1! It was truly special to see so many families come together to share food, dance, and music from around the world, celebrating the richness and diversity of our school community. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the evening such a success.

We were also excited to welcome our future kindergarten students—the Class of 2039! It was a joy to meet our newest learners and their families, and we look forward to having them join our school community.

Throughout this month, we will be celebrating our incredible teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Month. Their dedication and care make a lasting impact on our students every day. Please see the details below for ways you can support our PTO Teacher Appreciation events and help us show our gratitude.

We have also noticed an increase in student illnesses. To help keep our community healthy during these final weeks of school, please remember to keep your child home if they have a fever and encourage frequent handwashing.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we head into the final stretch of the school year.

Warmly, Kate

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Now Available

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, we will share copies with you directly.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

What's Happening Mount Eagle April 17, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

This week, our 1st grade students enjoyed a wonderful field trip to the National Zoo! With the warm weather, students had a fantastic time exploring and were excited to see animals such as pandas, elephants, and meerkats. It was a memorable day of learning and discovery.

We are also celebrating Earth Week at Mount Eagle! Students are participating in a fun Spirit Week to recognize the importance of caring for our planet. In addition, we are looking forward to our 13th Annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM. Please see the article below for more details—we hope you can join us!

As a reminder, school will be closed on Tuesday, April 21 to allow the community access to our building for voting.  Teachers will be working from home to ensure they are ready to continue instruction on Wednesday.

As we move further into the final quarter, students are also beginning their end-of-year assessments. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth. SOL testing dates are included in the article below for your reference.

Thank you for your continued support during this busy and exciting time of year!

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year.  Our current absentee rate is 15.9%.

What's Happening Mount Eagle April 10, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

We are excited to be starting the final quarter of the school year! It’s hard to believe how quickly the year has gone, and we are looking forward to a strong finish filled with meaningful learning and memorable experiences.

This week, our 5th grade students traveled to the Natural History Museum, an enriching experience made possible through the generous support of our PTO. We are grateful for the opportunities these funds provide to extend learning beyond the classroom.

Looking ahead to next week, we have several exciting events:

  • Grade 1 will be visiting the National Zoo.
  • Students in Grades 5 and 6 will participate in the All County Chorus Festival.
  • Some of our 5th grade students will represent Mount Eagle at the Science Olympiad at Oakton High School.

We are also looking forward to our upcoming Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 21 from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM. Families are invited to join us for a variety of fun and engaging activities, including planting in our gardens, tie-dyeing, face painting, and creating bird feeders. We hope to see many of you there!

We are proud of our students for taking part in these opportunities to learn, perform, and connect as a community. As always, thank you for your partnership.

Warmly, Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

What's Happening Mount Eagle March 27, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Despite the weather delays across February and March, we ended third quarter strong. Our teachers maximized the learning time with our students to ensure everyone was focused on the standards.

Next week is Spring Break, and there will be no school for students. Our school office will also be closed during this time to allow our dedicated staff to recharge with their own families. We look forward to seeing all our students back in the building on Tuesday, April 7.

April is a particularly significant month for our community as we celebrate the Month of the Military Child.  We are incredibly proud of our military-connected students and recognize the unique strength and resilience they bring to our classrooms. Please stay tuned for events for our entire community.

I hope this upcoming week provides you with plenty of sunshine, relaxation, and quality time with those you love. Whether you are traveling or enjoying a quiet "staycation," I wish you a refreshing and wonderful Spring Break.

Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education.

Warmly, Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days. Read Dr. Reid’s  letter to elementary parents  for more details.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year.  Our current absentee rate is 14.9%.

What's Happening Mount Eagle March 6, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

We are off to a fantastic start with our first week of “Marching Toward Our Future Month!” It has been wonderful to see our students already thinking about their interests, goals, and dreams.

Last Wednesday, students participated in “Dress as Your Favorite Hobby or Interest” Day, and we loved seeing everyone’s passions on display! From athletes and artists to scientists and musicians, our students proudly showcased the activities that bring them joy and help shape who they are.

Next Wednesday, we will celebrate “Rep Your School Day.” Students are encouraged to wear Mount Eagle, Twain, Edison, or college gear as we continue to build excitement about future pathways and school pride.

A special shout-out to our sixth graders, who attended Colonial Days at Mount Vernon. They did an excellent job representing Mount Eagle while learning about the communities that lived there during the colonial period. We are proud of the way they demonstrated curiosity, respect, and engagement throughout the experience.

Thank you for your continued support as we help our students dream big and plan for bright futures!

Warmly, Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. What's Happening Mount Eagle February 20, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Mount Eagle Families,

It has been a wonderful week full of learning at Mount Eagle! Our grade-level teams spent time reviewing midyear assessment data, and we are excited to share that we are seeing positive growth in both math and reading so far this year. This progress reflects the hard work of our students and the dedication of our staff. Well done to everyone for their commitment to learning and growth!

As an AVID school, we are always focused on helping students build skills for success now and in the future. During the month of March, we will celebrate “Marching Towards Our Futures Month.” Throughout the month, our All School Meetings will feature activities designed to help students think about their dream jobs, possible career paths, and college opportunities.

We will also celebrate with Spirit Wednesdays each week, giving students fun opportunities to show their excitement about their futures. We look forward to seeing our students dreaming big and beginning to envision all that lies ahead.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our learners today and their leaders of tomorrow.

Warmly, Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Winter Family Score Reports for ES Screening/Growth Assessments

Family score reports for elementary winter screening and growth assessments will be centrally distributed to families through SIS ParentVUE (PVUE) Documents. Families in grades PreK-6 will receive up to three (3) reports based on the assessments their student took this winter:

Meal Kits for Fasting Students

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete  registration forms  as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the  FCPS Registration webpage

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

Our goal is to maintain a chronic absenteeism rate below 10% by the end of this school year.  Our current absentee

What's Happening Mount Eagle January 30, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

Thank you for your continued flexibility and patience with the recent school closings and delays. We truly appreciate your efforts to get your children to school despite the many schedule changes. Your partnership has been essential as we’ve worked to help students reestablish routines and get back into the rhythm of being in school each day.

I’d also like to share that our teachers have recently completed mid-year assessments of student progress in reading and math. In the coming weeks, teaching teams will be meeting to analyze these results and make instructional adjustments to best support student learning. Parents can access their child’s assessment results through ParentVUE. If you need assistance accessing ParentVUE, please contact the Mount Eagle main office at (703) 721-2100, and we will be happy to help.

Looking ahead to next week, our Multilingual Learners will begin taking the WIDA assessment. This assessment measures students’ progress in English language acquisition and is an important indicator of our school’s overall achievement. If your child is participating, you can support them by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep the night before testing days.

Thank you again for your ongoing support and collaboration. Together, we continue to help our students grow and succeed.

Warmly,Kate

Kate Kirkland, Principal

Our Student Information Assistant, Ms. Sara Merino Paz, is available to answer your questions. Reach her by calling Mount Eagle at 703-721.2100 or emailing [email protected] .

What's Happening Mount Eagle January 30, 2026 A Message from Ms. Kirkland

Dear Families,

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our custodial staff and community members for their hard work following the recent snow and ice. Thanks to their efforts, our driveway is clear and our campus sidewalks are ready for students, staff, and families. I’m also grateful to the many neighbors and community members who have been working diligently to clear sidewalks leading to the school, helping everyone arrive safely.

As winter weather continues, we ask that families please continue working together as a community to clear sidewalks near your homes whenever possible. These collective efforts allow families to walk to school safely and confidently.

I’d also like to share that our staff has been planning and preparing to ensure we are ready to continue strong instruction when students return. Thank you to our families for ensuring that students are using their division-issued laptops to access FCPS-approved learning platforms so students can continue to practice their learning safely.  We will need your help to make sure these machines are ready to support student learning when we return. Please make sure they are charged and in backpacks so that they can be used to support work in classrooms.

We truly appreciate your partnership and support as we navigate the winter season together.

Warmly,Kate
