See What Makes us Proud Majors!
Ten Reasons why Mount Vernon High School Stands Out
10 Ways MVHS Shows Its Major Pride!
Academic Achievement
As a school with 61% of our students categorized as current or former multilingual learners (MLL), we are proud that over 92% of our MLL students passed all the VA state tests to earn their verified credits for graduation in 2024-2025. Our International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is graduating 68 students from the Diploma and Certificate Programs. Our class of 2025 (as of the end of May 2025) has earned ~$4 million in Scholarships.
Student Programs
In addition to our exceptional academic & Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs, Mount Vernon HS students excel in many extracurricular activities, including athletics, band, orchestra, chorus and performing arts. In the 2024-2025 school year, MVHS has honored and decorated 106 student-athletes with All-District Honors, with 16 earning All-Region Honors and 2 at the All-State Level. MVHS musicians, singers and performers were also recognized at all three levels, with 5 students receiving All-District Band Honors and 2 students receiving All District and All-State Choral Honors. A total of 14 of our students were recognized with All-Academic Athletic Honors. Our SGA is highly involved in our positive school environment, including spirit days, monthly ethnic and cultural celebrations and staff recognitions. Over 35 students received Student of the Quarter
and Achievement Awards
recognitions at the Edison Academies for Auto Collision, Auto Technology, Cyber Programming, Electrical Construction, Construction Technology, HVAC and Veterinary Science.
Staff Recognition
MVHS currently has four (4) National Board Certified Teachers for this school year and has been proud to have several others in the past. Our Theatre and Orchestra Teachers from our Fine & Performing Arts Department have been recognized at the county and state levels. During the 2024-2025 school year, coaches in our baseball, softball and track programs were recognized as "Coaches of the Year".
One of our school counselors was named "FCPS's Outstanding High School Counselor" in 2024.
Community Engagement
MVHS works closely with our amazing community to provide diverse opportunities for our students, outside of the opportunities provided to all of FCPS high schools. Recently, MVHS hosted the VACRO College Fair, where 60+ colleges and universities attended. Additionally, MVHS hosted the Steamology STEM Fest
(featuring MVHS volunteers/mentors) as well as an FCPS Teacher Hiring Fair.
School Culture
MVHS boasts a diverse school culture that celebrates all of our students and their backgrounds and experiences. MVHS annually celebrates our military families with our Purple Star initiatives & Chapter 35 Military Benefits, as well as celebrations during the cultural recognition months and during planned SGA Spirit activities. We truly embody our motto of "Once a Major, always a Major!"
Facilities and Resources
While the MVHS school building is aging gracefully, the amazing MVHS building services staff keeps our facility running at top levels each school year. Each month MVHS proudly hosts many local, county and state events in our vast Field House and extensive athletic facilities while the MVHS Fine & Performing Arts team perform programs in the iconic Andrew Lee Pauley Theater.
