English Language Arts Strategies

Outcome: 

  • On 2026 Reading SOL Tests, Students with Disabilities student group will increase simple pass rate by 14 points compared to 2025.

    Additional Measurable Outcome being monitored:

    By June 2026, Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third Grade students identified as High Risk on VALLSS at the beginning of the year will shift from High Risk Band to Moderate Risk or better.

  • On 2026 Reading SOL Tests, simple pass rate for all 3rd grade students will increase by 14 points compared to 2025.

Strategies:

  • Use data from formative and summative assessments in the core curriculum to guide instructional decisions during tier 1 and tier 2 reading and writing instruction (ex. data dialogues, CT data discussions).

  • Improve integrity of implementation of core curriculum: tailoring instruction to meet student needs aligned with evidence-based literacy instruction (ex. classroom walkthroughs, CT planning, coaching).

  • Increase teacher pedagogical skills in evidence-based literacy instruction to improve implementation of the core curriculum (ex. explicit instruction, student discourse).

Mathematics Strategies

Outcome:

  • On 2026 Grades 3-6 Math SOL Tests, Students with Disabilities student group will increase simple pass rate by 10 points compared to 2025.

  • On 2026 Grades 3-6 Math SOL Tests for all students will increase simple pass rate by 10 points compared to 2025.

Strategies:

  • Improve the integrity of implementation of core curriculum, and/or intervention programs by using FCPS-adopted resources with fidelity to align with the Framework for Engaging & Student-Centered Mathematics Instruction.

  • Improve alignment of instructional planning based on analysis of common assessments.

  • Increase teacher implementation of explicit instruction and other components of effective mathematics intervention.

Chronic Absenteeism

Outcome:

  • By June 2026, Mt. Vernon Woods ES will conclude the year with 10.4% chronic absenteeism rate. 

Strategies:

  • MTSS Schoolwide and Site Intervention teams analyze attendance, behavior, and wellness data twice a month to evaluate implementation of Tier 1 SEL/wellness initiatives and identify students in need of Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions. Integrate consistent analysis of data disaggregated by student groups (race/ethnicity, SWD, ML, FRM).

  • Schools consistently incorporate SEL 3 Signature Practices—inclusive welcome, engaging strategies, and intentional closures—across classrooms and content areas to foster inclusive, supportive, and emotionally engaging learning environments.

  • Schools share multilingual attendance materials with families throughout the year to educate families regarding the importance of attendance for school success.

Science

Outcome:

  • On 2026 Grade 5 Science SOL Tests for all students will increase simple pass rate by 10 points compared to 2025.

Strategies:

  • Increase opportunities for students to develop and apply disciplinary literacy skills of reading, writing, discussing, and thinking in science.

  • Expand opportunities for students to meaningfully examine real-world applications of scientific principles.

  • Increase content and/or pedagogy knowledge in science for all teachers (advanced, general, ESOL, special education).
