New SOL Growth Reports for Grade 3-8 Tests

Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) test results, along with other student data, help demonstrate in which subjects or topics students may need additional academic support.

In order to help interpret SOL results for parents, the Virginia Department of Education has released new Standards of Learning Growth Parent Reports for families of students who took grade 3-8 SOL math and reading tests this spring.

The Growth Parent Report ties together scores from fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) with the student’s current spring SOL results to show their trend in academic progress this year.

Learn how to understand your student’s grade 3-8 SOL results and find resources to support their ongoing learning

 It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage .

Dear Panther Families,

What an exciting week we had at the Woods! On Saturday our Lady Panthers and their families completed their 1 mile run and it was our fastest yet! Way to go Panthers! On Thursday our PreK students enjoyed a puppet show put on by the Fairfax County Fire Department. We also had our annual SOL SMASH and some lucky staff members were pied in the face to pump up our students for the SOLs. Speaking of SOLs, testing starts next week for grades 3rd- 6th grade. Attendance will be very important during this time, so please make sure your students are on time to school!

  Dear Panther Families,

It's been a great week at the Woods as we welcomed our students back from spring break. We kicked the week off with an assembly with Ms. Berry and Ms. Robinson where we refreshed our commitment to our Panther PRIDE pact. We also talked about how to handle conflict and being careful with our words. Students also got to hear about plans for the PRIDE awards coming at the end of the school year. We are looking forward to a wonderful fourth and final quarter.

Sincerely,

Monday April 8th at 4:00 is our next PTO meeting and 5:00 begins our Family Food Market. Hope to see you there!    Upcoming Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing:The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for our students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

Important Reminder about Early Dismissal

Students can not be dismissed from the office after 2:30pm. The end of the school day is a very busy time. Both office staff and teachers are preparing for dismissal. Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

Parents/caregivers should make an appointment but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. Please call 703-246-7100 to schedule an appointment.

Learn more about vaccinating your child and find community resources to support their health and well-being.

Note:All students enrolling in public and private schools in Virginia are required to be adequately immunized per the Code of Virginia.

Dear Panther Families,

Thank you to everyone who joined us at our Chuck E. Cheese fundraiser night. It was great to see so many families and the big smiles on the faces of our students. If you didn't already hear from your students, Chuck E. (pictured above) came to school on Wednesday to greet students and encourage them to attend the event. We can't wait to find out how much money we raised for Mt Vernon Woods thanks to you! We hope to see you at our next PTO meeting on Monday at 4:00pm.
