Student Expectations
As our mission states, we are here to to provide a small, structured and nurturing environment that supports the academic, social-emotional, vocational and behavioral growth of every student. Reaching this goal, however, requires joint responsibility of both the school andthe student.
We ask that the students know and understand the following expectations.
Students Are Expected to:
- Adhere to the established Cell Phone and PED policy.
- Wear clothing that is appropriate for an academic environment.
- Use appropriate language that others will not find offensive.
- Arrive to class on time, be ready to learn and ask for help when needed.

Cell phone and P.E.D. policy
Cell phones and personal devices(airpods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) must be off and away for the entire school day(bell to bell) with the exception of lunch time in designated lunch spaces. Phones can be stored in a locker or backpack during the day.
- Phone accessories are also to be silenced and away when phone use is prohibited. Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
- Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.

Cell phones are not permitted to be used as an instructional tool.
*If your student needs access to their phone for medical accommodations, it is important to note that the current cell phone policy and guidelines have not changed. Therefore, students who currently require access to a cell phone or another personally owned device for medical reasons, or an accommodation to access the curriculum and make progress to their individualized goals, will continue to have such access.
Use of Cell Phones and/or Cell Phone Accessories on FCPS Properties or at FCPS-sanctioned EventsStudents are advised that the use of cell phones and/or cell phone accessories outside of the cell phone policy guidelines is a violation of student disciplinary rules. As such, schools will respond to the violations of the policy by following normal disciplinary procedures, in accordance with the FCPS Students Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document.
Possession of Cell Phones and/or Cell Phone Accessories on FCPS Properties or at FCPS-Sanctioned EventsAll cell phones and/or cell phone accessories should be off and away during the school day in accordance with the FCPS cell phone policy. FCPS is not responsible for providing charging stations for personally owned devices nor does it perform repair or maintenance on cell phones and/or cell phone accessories.
Security, Theft, or DamageCell phone and/or cell phone accessories, including secure storage and care of these items, are the sole responsibility of the student. FCPS is not responsible for the security or safety of cell phones and/or cell phone accessories, nor for any loss, damage, or theft of these items.
Cell Phone and/or Cell Phone Accessory DamageFCPS is not responsible for damage to cell phones and/or cell phone accessories that may occur in schools, at school-sanctioned functions, or on school property.
Dress Code
Your school respects your right to express yourself through what you wear. It is important to also understand that your clothes should be appropriate for your school day.
Students are expected to dress in accordance with the FCPS dress code which is outlined in Regulation 2613.
Attire and Accessories
- Students must wear each day:
- A shirt;
- A bottom (pants, sweatpants, shorts, skirts, dress, or leggings);
- Shoes;
- Clothing required by specialized courses or activities, as appropriate, such as sports uniforms or safety gear.
Please note that a one-piece garment (e.g., romper) that serves the same function as a shirt and bottom, is also permissible.
- Prohibited clothing and accessories, in violation of the FCPS dress code, are those that, regardless of the student’s age or gender:
- Depict or promote illegal, violent, or lewd conduct;
- Depict or promote the unlawful possession or use of weapons, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, drug paraphernalia, or other controlled substances (regardless of the student’s age);
- Expose genitalia, chest, or buttocks;
- Expose underwear or undergarments, whether due to the transparency, length, or lack of coverage. Bra and bralette straps on undergarments worn under other authorized clothing as outlined in this regulation are not a violation;
- Obscure the face, such as helmets, headgear, ski-masks, or balaclava masks (except as religious observance, medically necessary, or otherwise noted as an accommodation in a student’s individualized education program [IEP] or Section 504 plan);
- Include language, profanity, symbols (e.g., swastikas, KKK references, gang symbols), icons, or images that are reasonably foreseeable to cause a material and substantial disruption or invade the rights of others and that amount to hate speech, are highly offensive or threatening to others, or impede or distract from the School Board’s mission of instilling values necessary or appropriate for polite civil discourse or political discussion in school context;
- Accessories that constitute a health or safety hazard or are harmful to the building equipment (i.e., spiked belts);
- Sunglasses inside the school building except as an accommodation for medical use.
Language
Use of appropriate language while on campus shows respect for self, others and the academic environment. While in class, hallways, lunchroom, library and elsewhere, students should use appropriate language at all times. This behavior will generalize to work environments and the community if practiced at school.
On Time, Ready to Learn & Ask for Help
On Time
Students should report directly to class during transitions. If a student must address a personal or school related need, they must report to their classroom first. After requesting to leave the classroom, the hallway escort system must be followed. Students who are late to class should be marked tardy unexcused.
Ready to Learn
Students should report to class ready to learn. Students should determine the materials needed for each school subject and how to take responsibility for having their materials ready. Students should follow established classroom procedures without prompts such as turn in homework, take out materials, log into laptop, etc. and prepare to listen, interact and learn.
This "Ready to Learn" strategy supports the development of the universal skills of personal responsibility and being prepared for class. Personal responsibility, respect for self and others, and preparation will facilitate students’ success in all academic content areas and post secondary endeavors.
The "Ready to Learn strategy helps students be ready to meet specific employer needs. “Too often, high school students do not demonstrate workplace habits that employers prioritize, including reliability, punctuality, customer service and high-quality task completion,” said Andrew Rothstein, Chief Academic Officer of the National Academy Foundation.
