May 15 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

Thank you to our entire Rolling Valley community for a successful Early Release Wednesday this week. We appreciate your continued partnership and flexibility throughout the year, as these afternoons provided valuable time for staff collaboration, planning, and professional learning. This marked our final Early Release Wednesday for the school year.

Learning continues at a strong pace across the building as students work hard to complete SOL assessments. Throughout the school students continue to participate in hands-on learning activities, and collaborative experiences are also continuing across grade levels, keeping students engaged and connected to their learning in meaningful ways.

Our 3rd grade students are also eagerly preparing for their upcoming Temples and Tombs activity, an exciting hands-on experience that brings their study of ancient civilizations to life. We look forward to seeing their creativity, collaboration, and enthusiasm shine during this memorable event!

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

This spring, students at Rolling Valley Elementary School will participate in important assessments based on their grade level. These include Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what students have learned, and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments, which help us understand each student’s current level and growth.

We encourage all families to support their children in participating in these assessments. The state of Virginia requires schools to assess at least 95% of students on SOL tests. When students do not participate, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and our ability to fully understand and support student progress.

Families can help students feel confident and prepared by encouraging strong routines. A good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and arriving at school on time all make a difference. Please also remember that the FCPS cell phone policy remains in effect during testing.

Attendance on testing days is especially important. If you are aware of a scheduling conflict that may cause your child to miss a test, please notify the school as soon as possible so we can plan for a make-up session.

Students in grades 3–6 will participate in SOL testing on the following dates:

Grade 5:Science - May 21

Grade 6:Math - May 19

May 8 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

While learning is happening in every classroom each day, our students are also thriving through the many experiences that make Rolling Valley such a vibrant and connected school!

This spring, students have been digging into hands-on discovery in Garden Club, where they are learning about responsibility, sustainability, and the science of growing. Our Chess Club continues to build strategic thinkers and collaborative problem-solvers as students sharpen their skills and challenge one another in friendly competition. Meanwhile, our students in Pet Robots are exploring creativity, coding, engineering, and teamwork through engaging STEM experiences that spark innovation and imagination.

We also loved seeing our community come together for Bike, Walk, and Roll to School events, promoting healthy habits, school spirit, and fun before the school day even begins!

And this week, we are especially grateful as we celebrate Staff Appreciation Week. Our incredible staff members go above and beyond every single day to create meaningful learning experiences, build relationships, and support every child at Rolling Valley. Their dedication, energy, and heart are what make our school such a special place for students and families alike.

Thank you to our families and community for continuing to support the many opportunities that help our students grow, lead, create, and shine both inside and outside the classroom!

May 1 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

We had a great week, and it was packed with field trips! Fifth grade visited the Maryland Science Center in , kindergarten enjoyed Frying Pan Farm Park, and second grade explored the Children’s Science Center Lab. Fourth grade had a field trip brought right to them, engaging in a hands-on Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience.

In the evenings this week, we hosted Ms. Raga, principal of Saratoga Elementary School, to support families navigating the upcoming boundary change for next school year. We also held our Advanced Academic Placement information night for families of recently identified full-time eligible students. We were incredibly proud of our fifth and sixth graders for their outstanding performances during both the evening and school-wide chorus concerts.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend. Please see below for important upcoming dates.

April 24 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

We had a wonderful week celebrating Earth Week, thanks to the thoughtful planning of Ms. Marsala and Mrs. Milian. Our students engaged in a variety of hands-on experiences, including our first N.E.S.T. event, where students across the school participated in an hour of outdoor, eco-friendly activities. It was a meaningful opportunity to come together as a school community through nature exploration, environmental stewardship, and shared outdoor learning.

Our culminating activity, the “lambmowers,” exceeded all expectations. The day was filled with smiles, laughter, and memorable moments for students and staff alike. To capture the excitement of this unique experience, Fox 5 visited Rolling Valley to highlight this special event.

In addition to Earth Week activities, students enjoyed an author visit from Josh Funk and our Robotic Club members participated in a Robotics Competition led by Ms. Williams. Even with a shorter four-day week, it was incredible to see how much our students experienced and accomplished.

We are looking forward to another fun-filled week ahead. Please be sure to review the important dates below for upcoming activities.

Families,

We know some of you are in the process of determining the best placement to meet your students’ advanced academic needs for next school year (Local Full-Time AAP, center-based Full-Time AAP, or deferring Full-Time AAP services and accessing Part-Time AAP services instead).

To help you determine what is best for your student, schools where your student can access Full-Time AAP services hold orientations to provide information on more school-specific topics.

Our school,  Rolling Valley Elementary, will hold an orientation on Thursday, April 30, from 5:30- 6:30 pm in the library. We will explain how we implement our Full Time Advanced Academics plan, and the unique and exciting opportunities we offer our students at Rolling Valley. You will have a chance to meet some of the staff and ask more personalized questions.

We look forward to meeting with you! Please reach out to Krystyn Carey with any questions- [email protected] .

We hope that you can join us!

Sincerely,

Veronica Del Bagno, Principal

Library News!

We had a wonderful author visit with Josh Funk this week. He met with students K-6 and shared some of his books, talked to us about how long it takes to make a book (over 1,000 days!), gave us a preview of his upcoming book Dino Door that releases on May 5th, and even had students create their own characters to write about. We had a fantastic time and students really enjoyed it! A huge thank you to the PTA for helping to fund his visit and thank you to the families who ordered books for him to sign and supported our local bookstore, Scrawl Books!

Next week is the last week of National School Library Month! There is an optional spirit day on Thursday, April 30thfor students to dress up as their favorite book character! No masks or weapons please. We can’t wait to see the creativity!

Parent Input for Class Placements 2026–2027

If there is information about your child that you feel would be helpful for our team to consider, particularly related to learning style or classroom environment, you are invited to share that input by emailing Veronica Del Bagno at [email protected]

This is a friendly reminder about student use of Smart Watches during the school day. Students should not be using watches to communicate during the school day. If a student is not feeling well, our staff is always here to help along with access to our clinic and will contact you as needed.

April 17 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

What a full and exciting week! We loved celebrating our Military Connected Students during Purple Up Spirit Week. A big shoutout to Ms. Amy LaCrosse for organizing and facilitating such meaningful activities, and thank you to everyone who joined in the spirit all week long.

We kicked things off on Monday with a schoolwide assembly featuring Joe Romano. We are grateful to our wonderful PTA for sponsoring this experience and giving our students the opportunity to enjoy an engaging presentation focused on personal character.

One of the highlights of the week was an annual favorite activity, music therapy, where students in our ID and IDS classrooms enjoyed music, singing, and joyful connection together.

Thank you to all the families who joined us for STEAM Night. There were so many hands on, engaging activities, and it was wonderful to see students excited to participate and eager to return. We appreciate the leadership of our coaches, Suzy Penn, Holly Tate, and Krystyn Carey, along with all staff and parents who made this event possible.

We wrapped up the week with a warm but memorable field trip to Little Feet. Despite the heat, the smiles and laughter made it all worthwhile.

As a reminder, there will be no school on Tuesday, April 21 due to voting. Additionally, the previously scheduled early release on Wednesday, April 22 has been canceled, and it will now be a full school day.

Have a great weekend!

Veronica Del Bagno

LAMBMOWERS!

As we continue to bring engaging and unique learning experiences to our school, we are excited to share that we are preparing a special outdoor space near Door 9 as part of an upcoming visit from lambs. These “lambmowers” will help us care for our green spaces in a fun and environmentally friendly way.

You may notice small flags placed in the grass in this area. These flags are marking sections where we are intentionally allowing the grass to grow in preparation for the lambs’ arrival.

We ask for your support in reminding students to respect these markers by not disturbing or removing the flags and by staying out of the designated areas. This will help ensure the space is ready and safe for this special experience.

Thank you for helping us care for our school grounds and for supporting this exciting opportunity for our students.

Rolling Valley  Full-Time AAP Orientation

Krystyn Carey, Advanced Academics Resource Teacher

March 13 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

What a week it has been at Rolling Valley! We experienced a full week of learning and activity, topped off with a very unexpected temperature change that brought snow to our area yesterday afternoon. The snowfall was a fun surprise for students and staff and certainly kept everyone talking as they watched it come down.

Inside our classrooms, learning has been in full swing. Our 5th grade students have been deeply engaged in their research projects, asking thoughtful questions, exploring topics of interest, and developing their ideas as they prepare to share their learning.

Across the school, students have been actively engaged in reading, math, and science instruction. It has been wonderful to see students thinking deeply, collaborating with classmates, and applying new strategies during their lessons.

Hands-on learning continues to be a highlight in many classrooms as well. From interactive activities to collaborative projects, our students are learning by doing, discussing, and exploring new ideas together.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Veronica Del Bagno

Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal

March 6 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

Even with some snow in March and a delayed start, our students stayed focused and kept their routines strong all week long. Their consistency and positive energy were wonderful to see.

We wrapped up a fantastic Read Across America celebration filled with themed spirit days and, of course, our much anticipated annual Reading Swap. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible librarian, Samantha Reynolds, whose thoughtful planning and organization made the entire week such a success.

Our sixth graders had an exciting opportunity to explore STEM pathways during their visit to the Army Museum, sparking curiosity and real world connections. Back at school, classrooms were buzzing with meaningful learning, from rich reading experiences and hands on math exploration to new skills developing in both language arts and reading.

It was a full and joyful week of growth across our school community. I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

We kicked off the week with an unexpected snow day on Monday. While many students enjoyed the surprise break, we are hoping the snow is behind us and that warmer days are on the way.

Even with a shorter week, our students jumped right back into learning on Tuesday. Classrooms were filled with hands on activities, creative exploration, engaging lessons, and plenty of energy. Indoor recess brought its own kind of fun, and our teachers made the most of every moment to keep students learning, collaborating, and growing.

Have a great weekend!

Read Across America Week is next week! Students will be participating in fun reading activities all week long, including our book exchange, where students get “new” books (thank you for your donations!) and our annual Reading Swap, where students can choose any teacher in the school to hear a story from. To get in the spirit, there is also an optional spirit week to celebrate the fun of reading! Happy reading!

Code-Up in Action!

Our students brought math and engineering to life as they used Keeva planks during math. Working in teams, they designed and built block structures, carefully measuring to determine which tower stood tallest. Students compared results, analyzed differences from tallest to shortest, and discussed how design choices impacted stability and height.

Throughout the challenge, they applied the engineering design process by asking thoughtful questions, imagining possibilities, sketching their ideas, putting their plans into action, and revising their designs based on results. The room was filled with problem solving, collaboration, and rich academic conversation as students learned that every redesign brings them closer to success.

February 20 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

It was a short but busy week at Rolling Valley! With no school on Monday, a teacher workday on Tuesday, and our early release on Wednesday, we packed a lot into just a few days.

Thank you to all of our families for helping make Wednesday’s early release run so smoothly. Your planning and partnership make a real difference in making sure students are prepared for their dismissal process.

Today we had the opportunity to celebrate Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Many students wore yellow and shared thoughtful cards, drawings, and coloring pages to let our drivers know how much they are valued. We are incredibly grateful for the care, patience, and dedication our bus drivers show each day as they transport our students safely to and from school.

As we look ahead, we are excited to return to a full week of learning together. There is great momentum in classrooms, and we look forward to building on it next week.

We hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend, and we will see everyone on Monday!

February 13 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

What a full and buay week at Rolling Valley!

We had the opportunity to celebrate our outstanding Employee Award winners and recognize the incredible contributions they make to our school community. Our third graders proudly shared their Project Based Learning work centered on water makers, showcasing their research, creativity, and collaboration. Fifth grade students impressed us all with their imaginative Valentine’s boxes, and our entire school marked the 100th day of learning with excitement and schoolwide spirit.

It is always energizing to see our students and teachers so deeply engaged in meaningful learning and celebration throughout the week.

A special thank you goes to our custodial team for clearing the blacktop and taking advantage of the warmer weather so students could enjoy time outside. Their efforts gave our students valuable space to move, play, and recharge.

As we look ahead, please remember that there is no school on Monday in observance of the Presidents Day holiday. Tuesday is a teacher workday, and Wednesday will be an early release day.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Veronica Del Bagno

💧🌍  Water Keepers in Action! 🌍💧

Our 3rd graders wrapped up their Water Keepers Project by presenting and testing their final designs—and we couldn’t be more proud! Throughout this STEAM challenge, students became junior hydrologists and engineers, designing models to help clean or conserve water for our school and community.

From testing filtration systems to explaining conservation ideas with data, science vocabulary, and geometric designs, students showed incredible creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Even better, they confidently shared  why  their designs matter and how small actions can make a big impact.

Shout Out!

A huge thank you to our custodial staff for their outstanding work in cleaning the snow and ice off the blacktop.

Our students are thrilled to have open outdoor space again where they can run and play!!

Thank You PTA!

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our PTA for the thoughtful treats and festive decorations provided for our staff.

We are so thankful to be part of such a caring and generous community. The time, creativity, and care that went into preparing everything did not go unnoticed.

Thank you!!!

RVES Book Exchange! Enhancing Safety and Security for Staff and Students

School safety and security are being enhanced across FCPS with a new emergency management system. The system includes sensors installed in schools and a wearable emergency response button (ERB) for staff.

The button allows staff to quickly and discreetly request help and, once pressed, they provide location information within the school. The ERB will only work on school grounds and does not rely on cellular service. It is not meant to replace calling 911, but is an additional safety tool that can be used if calling 911 may not be safe or practical.

Learn more about the emergency management system . You may submit questions to the FCPS Chief of Safety and Security Office.

February 6 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

What a unique week this has been with weather related closures and two hour delays. Despite the interruptions, our students and staff made the most of each day. Teachers and students came to school ready to jump right back into routines, showing flexibility, resilience, and a strong commitment to learning.

Although we had to cancel our school wide PTA sponsored assembly, we still had some wonderful highlights. One standout moment was in second grade, where students participated in a project based learning experience that blended science, math, literacy, and critical thinking skills. Students applied their learning by taking measurements and exploring what it means to care for others as doctors using dolls thoughtfully set up by the second grade team. Connecting learning to real world experiences is always a joy to see and a powerful way to deepen understanding.

As a reminder, our next Early Release Wednesday is February 18.Please be on the lookout for communication from your child’s teacher as we work to ensure dismissal preferences are up to date.

We hope you stay warm and enjoy the weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Veronica Del Bagno

Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal

RVES Book Exchange! When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Help your student succeed in school by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit the FCPS website for helpful insights regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school to minimize impacts on learning.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to let us know so we can provide assistance, if needed.

Student Experience Survey

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey . This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link .

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan , which include a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

January 30 - News and Notes!

Dear Rolling Valley Families,

We hope you have stayed warm during these snowy and ice filled days, with some occasional time outdoors to enjoy the winter wonderland. Once the storm passed through, our custodial team worked hard to clear sidewalks and blacktop areas to prepare for students returning to the building. We are so grateful for their efforts.

After a week without students in the building, we are really looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school this Monday, February 2. We loved the photos families shared with us, and even Rocky had some fun in the snow.

Please be sure to review the calendar reminders below for upcoming dates. In the coming weeks, teachers will also be reaching out to confirm your dismissal preference for our next early release scheduled for Wednesday, February 18.

Have a wonderful weekend. We cannot wait to see our students on Monday.

Meal Accommodations Provide Safe, Nutritious Meals

FCPS’s Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to school meals that are safe, nutritious, and meet their individual dietary needs.

FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school. To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a menu for your child .

New Menu Items

This winter and spring, Food and Nutrition Services is rolling out new student-approved favorites including beef street tacos, fiesta street tacos, meat lovers pizza, kimchi, beef bulgogi, turkey pepperoni lasagna, and herbed BBQ  chicken drumsticks. These flavorful additions reflect FCPS commitment to variety and cultural inclusion in school meals. Check your school’s menu online or in the FCPS Mobile app!
