🏡 Community Corner
  • New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage

  • Finish the School Year With Strong Attendance!

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE . Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources .

Heritage Night at SEES was an amazing event!

English | Español | አማርኛ | 中文 | 한국어 | Tiếng Việt | العربية | فارسی | اردو

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

This week, we had the joy of hosting one of our favorite events of the year, Heritage Night. It was an incredible evening filled with connection, celebration, and pride. Seeing the smiles on our students’ and families’ faces, along with the energy and excitement throughout the building, was truly special. Moments like this remind us how strong our community is when we come together.

What makes this night so meaningful is the generosity and pride our families and staff bring as they share their cultures, traditions, and stories with one another.  From the food and performances to the activities and storytelling highlighted in the event , every part of the evening reflected the richness of our community.

We are especially grateful to our staff who supported the event and shared their own cultures alongside our families. Together, we honored the diversity that makes SEES so special and created a space where every Eagle feels seen, valued, and proud. 🦅

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

What’s happened in Third Grade Readingthis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Benchmark

Third Grade Unit 7 Essential Question:

What is a community?

Third Graders are reading personal narratives from young people who live in different types of communities across the United States, along with selections from both historical fiction and contemporary novels. As they explore these texts, they are learning that communities are places where people live and work, and that they can be urban, suburban, or rural. Third Graders are also discovering that each community has its own unique characteristics, shaped by its history, culture, and location, and that these factors influence how communities grow and change over time.

➕ Math Spotlight

What’s happened in Fourth Grade Maththis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence -  Student Centered Engagement

Fourth Grade Focus for This Week:

Our fourth graders are diving into geometry this week as they learn to describe shapes by their lines and angles. Students are exploring the attributes and characteristics of different polygons, paying close attention to parallel and perpendicular lines, as well as angles. You can support this learning at home with a fun “Shape Hunt”! Encourage your child to look around your home or neighborhood for real-world examples of shapes—windows, signs, tiles, and more—and describe them using geometry vocabulary. Ask questions like, “How many sides does it have?” or “Do you see any right angles?” It’s a great way to make math meaningful and connect classroom learning to everyday life!

What’s happened in Second Grade Readingthis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Benchmark

Second Grade Unit 7 Essential Question:

How does understanding the past shape the future?

Second Graders are reading informational social studies texts about primary sources along with narrative nonfiction pieces such as diaries, journals, and personal narratives that share firsthand accounts from the past and present. As they explore these materials, they are learning that primary sources can include photographs, writings, maps, and artifacts, all of which help people understand what life was like in the past. Second Graders are also discovering how people study artifacts and fossils to learn more about history. Through this work, they are building an understanding that learning about the past helps people make informed decisions and plan for the future.

➕ Math Spotlight

What’s happened in Fifth Grade Maththis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence -  Student Centered Engagement

Fifth Grade Focus for This Week:

Our fifth graders are soaring through math this week as they dive into engaging geometry and data concepts! In our geometry work, some students are exploring the characteristics of circles and learning to find both circumference and area, while others are wrapping up their study of geometry and measurement by classifying and measuring angles and triangles. Some of the students are also beginning an exciting unit on data and probability, where they are building skills to find the mean, median, mode, and range of data presented in a variety of ways, including lists, tables, stem-and-leaf plots, and line plots. “Together We Soar” as our students continue to grow as confident mathematicians!

🏡 Community CornerRequired Immunizations

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

As we head into the next few weeks, our students will begin SOL testing, along with other important assessments taking place throughout the building, including MAP, VALLSS, and iReady. These assessments are an opportunity for our students to showcase the incredible growth they have made since August. Our teachers are continuing to support students through goal-setting and active study strategies, and we encourage you to ask your child about the specific academic goals they are working toward this month.

You can help set your child up for success by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time each day. Most importantly, your encouragement matters. A calm, confident mindset goes a long way in helping students do their best. We are proud of the hard work our Eagles have put in and look forward to seeing them SOAR. 🦅

Calendar Updates

Updates to 2026-27 School Year Calendar

The School Board voted to direct the superintendent to designate Veterans Day as a standard instructional day for the 2026-27 school year. Because this day was added, the 2026-27 school year will now end for students on Wednesday, June 16, 2027. Find additional information on BoardDocs . View the updated complete school year calendar on FCPS’ website.

The last day of school for the current school year — Wednesday, June 17, 2026— has not changed.

SOL Support

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters

FY 2027 Budget: Sustaining Excellence

Help FCPS Sustain Excellence: Make Your Voice Heard on the FY 2027 Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There are several upcoming opportunities to provide feedback to the county on its budget before final adoption in May. This includes an online survey .

Community Conversations

Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on:

🦅 SOAR Shout-Outs

Ms. Julie Wines, 3rd Grade Teacher was recognized by FCPS CARES.  Read how she is rocking the SOAR Values!

“I first got to know Julie as a parent when my kids were in her third-grade class. Even back then, I could tell she was someone special. She truly cared about her students and always went the extra mile to make sure they felt supported, challenged, and valued. Now, getting to work alongside her on the same grade level has been such a full-circle moment for me. She’s not just a colleague; she’s been a mentor, friend, and someone I can always count on. She goes out of her way to make sure I’m doing well, whether that’s offering advice, helping me think through something, or just being there when I need support. She never makes you feel like you’re on your own. Julie gives that same level of care and dedication to everyone around her. Her students are at the center of everything she does, and it shows in the relationships she builds and the environment she creates in her classroom. She sets the standard for our school and is someone others naturally look to for guidance, truly exemplifying what it means to be an outstanding educator. She embodies FCPS values in everything she does and continues to support our school community by always stepping up and finding ways to make a difference. I feel really lucky that I got to experience her first as a teacher for my kids and now as a teammate. She truly goes above and beyond in every way, and she has made such an impact on me, her students, and our whole community.”

What’s happened in Kindergarten Readingthis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Benchmark

Kindergarten Unit 6 Essential Question:

How do we know what is right?

Our kindergarteners are beginning a new unit exploring folktales from different cultures. As they listen to and talk about these stories, they learn that folktales often teach important lessons about right and wrong. Students also discover that stories can show how ordinary people can do big things, especially when they work together.

What’s happened in Pre-K grade maththis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Student Centered Engagement

Pre-K  Focus for This Week

Our Pre-K mathematicians are soaring as they explore numbers in fun, hands-on ways! Students are recognizing numbers through dice patterns, practicing writing numerals, and counting with manipulatives like chain links. They are also comparing quantities using “more” and “less,” and beginning simple addition and subtraction. Students are also building their pattern skills by extending ABA and ABBA patterns, and even creating colorful rainbow patterns to show their learning in new ways. Each child is growing at their own pace, with some focusing on numbers 1–6 and others extending their skills to 12—because Together We Soar!

🏡 Community Corner Weather Safety
  • FCPS Commitment to Weather Safety

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Read more about weather safety , including the differences between an advisory, watch, and warning.

Budget
  • Provide the County Government With Feedback on Its Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The Board of Supervisors is reviewing the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Advertised Budget and considering possible adjustments before adoption in May. Opportunities to provide feedback to the county include Budget Town Hall Meetings airing on Channel 16 on Tuesday, April 7, at 7 p.m., (Springfield District) and Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m., (Franconia District).

You can also provide your input during the county’s Budget public hearings on Tuesday, April 14 , at 4 p.m., and Wednesday, April 15 , and Thursday, April 16 , at 3 p.m. at the Government Center Board Auditorium. Register in advance to speak

Visit the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors website to learn more about the county’s FY 2027 Budget.

New Menu Items
  • Discover What’s New on the Menu

FCPS is excited to bring new and flavorful menu items to students while continuing to meet the high nutrition standards you trust. The school division’s registered dietitian team has developed standards to make school meals healthier while still tasting great.

Here’s what students can look forward to:

  • New globally inspired dishes that offer exciting flavors from around the world.
  • Fresh ingredients like whole grains, lean proteins, and plant-based options.
  • Scratch-made items like homemade granola.
  • Vegetarian options, like the meatless Philly melt, which are available alongside classic favorites.

Our goal is to provide balanced, safe, and flavorful meals that support students’ learning, growth, and overall health.

Want to know what’s on the menu? Food and Nutrition Services has menus available.

Community Conversations
  • Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

As a listening leader, connecting with community members across our school division is critical to FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid. Her Community Conversations are opportunities for you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Events will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on:

Click on a date to register to attend that event. Registration is not required, but it helps with planning, especially for child care and interpretation services. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

April Early Release Wednesdays Canceled
  • Elementary Early Release Wednesday Update for AprilTuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time ServicesStudents can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

  • Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) or Assistant Principal by April 15, annually.
  • The  AAP School-Based Services Referral Form may be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs-aap/advanced-academic-program-aap-forms or by searching “AAP Forms” at https://www.fcps.edu/.
  • Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status by early June.

Screening Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time ServicesMultiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Appeals Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time ServicesIf a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher or Assistant Principal.

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services Overview

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services in Elementary School
FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

  • Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
  • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
  • Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.

Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6
Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.

  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.
  • Part-Time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.
Screening for Full-Time Services

Screening Timeline for Full-Time ServicesScreening for Full-Time AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for Full-Time services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January.
 Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student.
 The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

For more information, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8Some advanced learners need a Full-Time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).

Students eligible for Full-Time AAP services are cluster grouped on a Full-Time basis and receive:

  • Full-Time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
  • Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.

Full-Time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Students brought a little luck with them as they learned math games during Family Math Night.

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

What a wonderful week of learning and community at SEES! We were thrilled to welcome so many families to our Math Night, where our Eagles had the opportunity to share their thinking, explore problem-solving together, and show what it means to be confident, curious mathematicians. Each grade level featured estimation jars that sparked excitement (and a little friendly competition!), and our grade-level teams created math games connected to current learning for families to take home. It was especially meaningful to see students and families learning the games together, building both skills and confidence in math in a fun, engaging way.

We also had the pleasure of celebrating our talented musicians at the Area Band Concert this week. Our students represented SEES with pride, demonstrating not only their musical skill but also their dedication, responsibility, and teamwork. We are so proud of their hard work and grateful to our music staff and families for supporting their growth and performance opportunities. Together, these moments reflect what it means to be a SOARing community—supportive of one another, optimistic in our efforts, accepting of each other’s strengths, and responsible in our commitments. Thank you for your continued partnership in making SEES a place where our Eagles truly shine. 🦅

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

This week our Eagles gathered for our Grade Level SOAR meetings, where our administrative team meets with each grade in a morning meeting–style conversation about our school values. Together, we focused on our current SOAR value: Accepting. Students shared thoughtful ideas about what it means to help others feel like they belong, to respect differences, and to notice when someone might be feeling left out.

During these conversations, we also revisited the four simple ways students can respond if they hear or see something that may be hurtful: Interrupt, Question, Educate, and Echo. I was incredibly proud of how reflective and honest our students were. Many shared examples of how they can stand up for one another and how being accepting makes our classrooms stronger and kinder places to learn.

At SEES, Together We SOARmeans we work as a community to make sure every Eagle feels seen, respected, and valued. Thank you for continuing these conversations at home and for helping us build a school where everyone truly belongs. 🦅

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

What’s happened in Fifth Grade Readingthis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Benchmark

Fifth Grade Unit 5 Essential Question

What value does technology bring to people’s lives?

In this unit, fifth graders explore how technology impacts society by reading poems, informational texts, and narrative nonfiction. They consider the question, What value does technology bring to people’s lives? and learn that innovation can have both positive and negative effects, with costs and benefits that are not shared equally. Students also examine how engineering makes work more efficient, how technology supports economic growth in the United States, and how the Industrial Revolution brought rapid changes to society.

Second grade mathematicians are off to an exciting start as they dive into building fluency with numbers all the way up to 999! Our students are strengthening their number sense by predicting patterns while skip counting by 2’s to 50 and by 5’s and 10’s to 200. Through engaging choral counting activities, vibrant visual representations, and coloring number patterns on hundreds charts, they are discovering how numbers connect and grow. It’s amazing to see their confidence increase as they recognize patterns, explain their thinking, and develop strong foundations for future math success!

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

This quarter, our SOAR value focus is Accepting. At SEES, being Accepting means creating a school climate where every student feels seen, respected, and like they truly belong.

As part of this work, both staff and students are learning and practicing four simple strategies for speaking up when words or actions may be hurtful or unkind:

  • Interrupt– Calmly say that the words or actions are not okay.
  • Question– Ask, “What did you mean by that?” to better understand.
  • Educate– Explain why certain language or behavior can be hurtful.
  • Echo– Support others who speak up. There is strength in standing together.

Our staff are learning and modeling these strategies alongside our students. Adults continue to guide conversations, support students through challenges, and ensure that everyone feels safe and cared for. We want students to build confidence in speaking up, while always knowing they have trusted adults ready to help.

We encourage families to talk at home about what it means to be Accepting and how we can all contribute to a school where everyone feels valued.

Together, we continue building a community where all Eagles belong.

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

What’s happened in Fourth Grade Readingthis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence: Benchmark

FourthGrade Unit 5 Essential Question

How do we make decisions about developing new technology?

This week, our fourth graders  are reading informational texts about how new technologies change society. They are exploring how technology can be both helpful and challenging, and why it can sometimes be controversial. Students are learning how robots are designed to do certain jobs efficiently and how automation continues to affect the way people live and work. They are also discussing what drives new inventions—especially how society’s needs (and other motivations) influence the technologies that are developed and how we decide whether to use them.

➕ Math Spotlight

What’s happened in Third Grade Maththis week?

FCPS Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence -  Student Centered Engagement

Third Grade Focus for This Week:

In third grade math, students have been working hard solving two-step word problems using addition and subtraction. They’ve been strengthening their problem-solving strategies by carefully reading, identifying key information, and showing their thinking. A special focus has been on mastering subtraction across zeros, and we are so proud of the persistence and growth they’ve shown! As they wrap up this unit, students are excited to jump into unit 8, where they will explore measurement, area, and perimeter—continuing to SOAR by being supportive classmates, optimistic learners, accepting of challenges, and responsible mathematicians each day.

🏡Community Corner 💬 Family Conversation Starters: Building an Accepting Community

This quarter, our SOAR focus is Accepting. Here are ways you can continue the conversation at home.

🌱For PreK–2 Families

Being Accepting means we help everyone feel like they belong.

Try asking:

  • How can you be Supportiveif someone feels left out?
  • What does it look like to be Acceptingwhen someone is different from you?
  • How can you be Optimisticand use kind words?
  • What is one Responsiblechoice you can make if you hear something unkind?

Remind your child that grown-ups at school are always there to help. We work together to keep everyone safe and cared for.

🌟For Grades 3–6 Families

Being Accepting means we use our voice and actions to build a community where everyone belongs.

Consider asking:

  • How can you be Supportiveif you notice someone being left out or treated unfairly?
  • What does it mean to be Acceptingof different perspectives, cultures, or identities?
  • How can you stay Optimisticand respectful when you disagree with someone?
  • What is a Responsibleway to speak up or seek help if something doesn’t feel right?

Encourage your child to talk through situations and remind them that speaking up does not mean handling it alone — trusted adults are always ready to guide and support.

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-ins even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

(unless otherwise noted) on:

Child care and interpretation services will be provided. Events are open to all. Visit the superintendent’s engagement page for the most up-to-date information.

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

Multiple studies show that school breakfast is important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Also, students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

We are full of celebration, leadership, and pride at SEES! 🦅

We hosted our Quarter 2 Awards Ceremony, recognizing students for their hard work, growth, and character. Students were honored for strong attendance, outstanding life and citizenship skills, meaningful improvement in academics or behavior, and for consistently demonstrating what it means to be a Super SOARing Eagle through positive office referrals. These awards are important because they celebrate not only academic success, but also perseverance, responsibility, character, and growth. We are incredibly proud of all of our recipients and the effort they put into their learning each day.

Our Green Teamalso met this week and continued their exciting environmental work. Students mapped out plans for our outdoor learning space and sensory gardens in the courtyard, finalized their recycled garden projects, and colored endangered species illustrations created by 9th graders from Lewis High School as part of a cross-school learning connection. It is inspiring to see our students take leadership in caring for our environment and strengthening community partnerships.

Thank you for your continued support as we celebrate student achievement and create meaningful learning opportunities for our Eagles.

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

ST Math Progress

During the second quarter alone, our students solved 320,853 puzzles. That brings our total for the school year so far to 606,556 puzzles— and we are well on our way to surpassing one million puzzles solvedthis year.

Out of 565 students, 445 students met the goal of solving 500 puzzles, which means 79% of our students reached the second quarter challenge goal.

Six classes — Aburish, August, Bognar, Staples, Taylor, and Wines— had 100% of their students meet the goal. In addition, Fagan and Malachowskihad 96% of students reach the goal, and Kumar and Sadafwere close behind at 95%.

For the first time ever, an entire grade level met the goal — third grade achieved 100% participation. This is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to both teacher dedication and student perseverance.

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

This week, we celebrate National School Counseling Weekand recognize the incredible impact our school counselors have on our students each and every day. 💙

School counselors in FCPS play an essential role in supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. Through classroom lessons, small group sessions, and individual counseling, they help students build skills, navigate challenges, and feel confident and supported at school.

We are especially grateful for Ms. Garg and Ms. Bradley, who work closely with students, families, and staff to ensure our Eagles feel cared for, understood, and ready to learn. Their compassion, dedication, and commitment make a meaningful difference in our school community.

If you’d like to participate, please encourage your child to make a card, write a thank-you note, or simply share a kind word to let our counselors know how much they are appreciated. Small gestures go a long way!

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

Ramadan Begins February 18; Fasting Accommodation Available

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in Islam. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity, and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids .

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Wednesday, February 18,which is an O day in FCPS. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances ( O days ) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Will Your Child Be Fasting During Ramadan?

We recognize that many in the Lane community will be observing Ramadan, and parents may wish to have their children offered accommodations during lunch time if they are fasting. If your child will be fasting, please let us know by filling out this form . This will help us provide the space and supervision for these students. If you have questions, please contact our family liaison,Lili Burga, at [email protected] .

Notes from the Nest From the Principals’ Desk

After a week of snow days and student holidays, we are looking forward to welcoming our students back to school. When we return, families may notice longer lines at Kiss and Ride and longer wait times at bus stops as routines resume and transportation adjusts to weather-related conditions and delays. Thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility during this transition back.As sidewalks and neighborhood paths continue to be impacted by snow and ice, we kindly ask families to shovel sidewalks as best they can so students are able to walk safely and do not need to step into the roadway. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to our custodial team, who worked tirelessly to clear walkways, entrances, and parking areas to make our school safe and accessible for students, staff, and families. Their efforts behind the scenes make a big difference for our entire community.

Thank you for your continued partnership and care as we return to school together.

With appreciation,

April Martin, Proud Principal & Kassandra Flading, Assistant Principal

Laptops, iPads & Chargers!

As students prepare to return to school, we wanted to share a gentle reminder to please make sure that school-issued laptops or iPads, along with the chargers your child brought home just before the extended time out of school, are packed in their backpacks.

These devices are used daily for instruction and assessments, so it is important that they return to school with students, preferably charged and ready to use.

Thank you so much for your support and partnership. We are looking forward to welcoming students back.

❄️ Cold Weather Safety Reminders

As we continue to experience cold, snowy, and icy conditions, we ask families to review the following safety reminders with students:

  • Stay on cleared sidewalks and pathways. These areas have been treated to help prevent slips and falls. Please remind students not to walk in the road or through snowbanks.
  • No playing on ice or snow piles on campus.Ice can be slippery and unsafe, even when it looks solid. For everyone’s safety, students should avoid sliding, climbing, or playing on icy areas at school.
  • Dress for the weather.Students should wear a warm coat, gloves, hat, and appropriate footwear so they can safely and comfortably enjoy outdoor time when conditions allow.
  • Walk carefully and take your time.Encourage students to watch where they step, use handrails when available, and avoid running on icy surfaces.
  • Listen to adult directions.Staff members are positioned to help keep students safe during arrival, dismissal, and transitions outdoors.
It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage
