Dear Terraset Families,

It’s hard to believe we’re only 24 school days away from the end of the 25-26 school year! Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 13th we will have our final 3 hour early release of the year. Students will follow their typical Wednesday dismissal routes. Thank you for having made any dismissal changes by last Friday, May 8th .   It will be very difficult to navigate dismissal changes on the 13th.  Our priority is to get every Tiger home safely at the correct time.

As the end of the year approaches, we also have many exciting experiential learning opportunities and events for our students. Today, our 5th graders are visiting Luray Caverns, next week our 4th graders will visit the Jamestown Settlement, and at the end of the month, our 6th graders will visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. We also have many fun schoolwide events, such as our annual Talent Show, Field Days/Tigers on the Run, Music Concerts, and the SLHS Grad Walk! See below for dates and details!

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

🏃🏼‍➡️Tigers on the Run + Field Day!

This year, we’re combining Field Day + a Fun Run Fundraiser for an unforgettable day of energy, teamwork, and Terraset Tiger Pride! Students will run while raising money through per-lap pledges or one-time donations. And all Tigers can participate regardless of whether they get pledges or donations.

School Fundraising Goal:   $10,000 If we reach our goal, students will get the chance toss a whipped-cream pie at Mrs. Aldridge and Callyn Giese (PTO President) during a school celebration! Classes will also compete to win a popsicle party (highest % of students signed up on the fundraising website) or a pizza party (most combined laps run). Why it Matters : Every lap run supports the Terraset PTO’s work to bring meaningful programs, fun events, and community support to our students, teachers, and families.

🍉FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Dear Terraset Families,

It is another busy week at Terraset! This week is Staff Appreciation Week and we are very grateful for everyone that has already shared their thanks to our fabulous teachers and staff. Huge thanks go out to our incredible PTO and families, which is showing us how “lei”-gendary we are to our Tigers by showering us with various treats throughout the week!

We are also beginning our Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in Grades 3-6 this week. Our teachers have been working hard to prepare our children so that they feel calm and confident for these tests. Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time and is well rested on their test day. You can further support them by sharing some words of encouragement and making sure they have a healthy breakfast, (students will also have access to a healthy breakfast from the cafeteria). Please note that any student that scores between 375-399 will have an opportunity for a retake and your child’s teacher will reach out to you for permission to retake the assessment.

Additionally, next Wednesday, 5/13 we will have our final 3 hour early release of the 25-26 school year.  Please be sure to check your email today for this month’s early release dismissal confirmation for your child/ren.  Students will follow their typical Wednesday dismissal routes unless a change in dismissal form has been submitted. Any changes should be made by no later than Friday, May 8th.   It will be very difficult to navigate dismissal changes on the 18th.  Our priority is to get every Tiger home safely at the correct time.

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

☕Parent Coffee- 5/8

Our In-person Parent/Principal Coffee will take place on Friday, May 8th at 9:45 AM. We hope you’ll join us for this opportunity to connect and ask questions!

♻️Green Team Clothing Swap

We are excited to host an upcoming Clothing Swapfor our school community! Students may begin bringing in gently used clothing donations starting Wednesday. If items are brought to your child’s classroom, they will be collected and delivered to Rooms 213 and 215.

Families are invited to “shop” the clothing swap on May 7th from 4:30–6:30 PM in the cafeteria. This is a great opportunity to find items your child may need—free of charge!

For more details, you can view the flyers in English and Spanish.

📝Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters .

Dear Terraset Families,

We hope you and your family enjoyed Spring Break and are rejuvenated for an incredible final quarter of school.  As the weather turns warmer and summer approaches, we need your help to ensure all of our Tigers are present and engaged in learning all day, every day.  We have many exciting learning opportunities and events planned, including field trips, Stuff The Bus on 4/24, spring music concerts, field day, 6th grade promotion, Staff Appreciation Week and more!

This Friday, April 10th is a student holiday and we will be hosting our annual Kindergarten Orientation event. If you or a neighbor have a student entering kindergarten at Terraset for the 2026-2027 school year, please join us at 10:30am in the cafeteria. You will have an opportunity to meet our phenomenal kindergarten team, support staff, and administration, and learn about our Purposeful Placement Process (KP3). The kindergarten staff, with the support of our administrators and specialists, use the first week of school as an opportunity to get to know the students and to inform final placement decisions. KP3 provides the Kindergarten team the opportunity to get to know each child, their strengths, and their needs. The information gained over the first week allows us to craft kindergarten classes with careful consideration of every child. Our goal is to create a balance of personalities and learning styles that will promote a dynamic learning community in each classroom for the duration of the school year. Dear Terraset Families,

The past week has been so amazing!  Many of our Tiger’s art has been on display at the Reston Community Center for the annual South Lakes Pyramid Youth Art Exhibit, and we have been gearing up for 2 great Terraset events:  Our STEAM night this Thursday, March 19th and our annual Terraset PTO 6th Grade Basketball Challenge on Thursday, March 26th at South Lakes High School!  Please see below for all the details.

We also have a couple of schedule changes for the remainder of this week to remind everyone about:

  • Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18th is our next early release Wednesday. Students will follow their typical Wednesday dismissal routes unless a change in dismissal form was submitted by no later than last Friday, March 13th.   It will be very difficult to navigate dismissal changes on the 18th.  Our priority is to get every Tiger home safely at the correct time.
  • This Friday, March 20th is a holiday for all students and staff. Eid Mubarak to those in our Muslim community celebrating! In Islam, Eid al-Fitr is a 3 day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. Additionally, Nowruz Mobarak to all who celebrate! Nowruz, meaning “New Day,” is a more than 3,000-year-old spring festival marking the first day of the new year at the vernal equinox. Rooted in ancient Persian civilization, it is widely celebrated as the national new year in Iran and Afghanistan and across many Central Asian nations. Families welcome the new season with festive meals, gift-giving, and the beautiful tradition of the Haft-Seen table, filled with symbols of new life and renewal.

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

Dear Terraset Families,

As we step into March, we continue to be inspired by the kindness, growth, and curiosity we see in our Tigers every day. Thank you for your ongoing support in making Terraset a place where all students feel valued and empowered to learn.

Our current chronic absenteeism rate is 6.6%.As you know, our goal is to stay below 10% all year, so this rate is a serious celebration! Please note that attendance is taken through the last day of school. This also includes tardies and early dismissals for our students. Every day that we partner together to keep chronic absenteeism down, we provide all Tigers with the environment to succeed. Let’s work together to stay below 10% for the remainder of this year!

We invite you to join us for our PTO meeting on Wednesday, March 4th at 6:30 PM. Our very own Terraset clinical team, Coleman Adkison, school psychologist, and Katie Brown, school social worker, will be presenting on how families can support student mental health. We hope to see many of you there.

Additionally, this month all grade levels will participate in a refresher on Students' Rights & Responsibilities. These conversations will help students reflect on their own behaviors and ensure they align with Terraset and FCPS guidelines for positive and respectful conduct.

As always, we appreciate your partnership in creating a supportive and engaging learning environment for our students!

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.

Dear Terraset Families,

We hope you enjoyed the surprise long weekend, thanks to some more winter weather. Believe it or not, spring will officially be here in less than a month! This is always a great time to pause and celebrate all of the incredible progress and achievements our Tigers have made so far this year. We have consistently observed our students engaging in meaningful and joyful learning, acquiring new skills, collaborating with one another and demonstrating kindness in many ways. This would not be possible without our talented professionals at school AND your dedication to our partnership- thank you!

Speaking of joyful learning, last week our 6th grade classes visited the National Gallery of Art, this week our 2nd graders will visit the Museum of the American Indian, 4th grade will enjoy a presentation on Watersheds by the Walker Nature Center, and our Terraset Ambassadors will take their annual field trip to George Mason University, where they will engage in leadership learning. We are very fortunate for our students to have these opportunities for learning outside of the classroom.

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

💻New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Dear Terraset Families,

We hope each of you enjoyed the long weekend and were able to take some time for a little fun, and to rest and recharge.  Last week it was incredible to experience 100th day and Valentine’s Day as a Tiger community. Our children and staff definitely felt the love as we celebrated with festive outfits, kind words, and respect for one another!

Tomorrow, 2/18/26, is our next 3-hour early release Wednesday.  Last week, we asked that you check your email for the early release dismissal route confirmation for your child/ren.  Any changes to that plan should have been made by last Friday by calling the main office at 703-390-5600 .   Please remember that it is very difficult to navigate dismissal changes on the day of the early release.  Our top priority is to get every Tiger home safely at the correct time.

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

🔒Upcoming Lockdown Drill

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

Virginia Law ( 22.1-137.2 ) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in our second and final drill later this school year.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

On Monday, all FCPS parents/caregivers and middle and high school students received an email to participate in a voluntary and confidential survey. (Please check your spam folder if you have not received it.)

Questions refer to proposed changes to FCPS’ SR&R document for next year. This document outlines the rules that students are expected to follow, and guidelines for consequences if those expectations are not met. Possible changes include:

Dear Terraset Families,

It’s been wonderful to have a regular week this week! Our students certainly are starting off the 3rd Quarter strong as a result.  We have been enjoying many learning opportunities recently including celebrating and deepening our understandings of Black History Month, getting ready for the 100th day of school this Friday, and many grade levels will be attending field trips for great experiential learning soon.

Speaking of the 100th day of school, it is so hard to believe that we’re already celebrating that milestone. That’s 100 days of learning, belonging, and partnership! We thank you for continuing to support routines for bedtime, mornings, and ensuring our Tigers arrive at school on time and ready to learn each day. Doing this sends our children the message that their education is important and sets them up for success.

On Wednesday, 2/18 we will have our next 3 hour early release.  Please be sure to check your email today for this month’s early release dismissal confirmation for your child/ren.  Students will follow their typical Wednesday dismissal routes unless a change in dismissal form has been submitted. Any changes should be made by no later than Friday, February 13th.   It will be very difficult to navigate dismissal changes on the 10th.  Our priority is to get every Tiger home safely at the correct time.

Dear Terraset Families,

We hope you enjoyed the snowy week off last week thanks to our first big storm of 2026! A HUGE thank you goes out to our custodial crew for working so hard in bitter cold all week to clear our grounds. We are excited to be back in school this week and have many learning opportunities planned including celebrating and deepening our understandings of Black History Month and our 2nd graders will visit the National Museum of of the American Indian.

Additionally, prior to our snow break, we were incredibly impressed by the outstanding talent of our students that participated in Broadway Night at South Lakes High School demonstrated- kudos to each of them!

Finally, I hope you will be able to join us tomorrow night from 6:30pm-7:30pm for our February PTO meeting. Our own Suzanne White, Math Resource Teacher, will be presenting on current approaches to teaching math at the elementary level and you won’t want to miss this meaningful information!

Yours in partnership,

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

🚗Kiss & Ride This Week
  • We expect a greater number of families than usual to utilize our kiss and ride for arrival and dismissal this week, due to the lingering snow and ice.
  • We expect longer than average wait times in order to safely allow students to exit and enter vehicles.
  • Exiting the school driveway remains right-turn only during arrival and dismissal due to our volume of traffic.
  • During arrival, both the main door and Door 2 will be used to welcome students as quickly as possible.
  • During dismissal, students will be loaded closer to Door 1 than usual, as the median between the driveway and sidewalk remains ice covered.
🚌Busses This Week
  • There may be delays both in the morning and afternoon this week. Check out the Here Comes The Bus Mobile App for real-time bus information.
  • Please support your students with safely waiting at bus stops and boarding/disembarking buses.

📝It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible.

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage .

📝Survey of Preschool Children

If you have a preschool-aged child who is eligible for kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year, please use this link  to access the form. Return completed forms to the office no later than February 27, 2026.

If you know of any children in your neighborhood who also have rising kindergartners, please share this information or ask them to reach out to Shannon Johnson at 703-390-5602.

Virginia law, Section 22.1-254 requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2025, must enroll in kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year. If your child turns five on or before 09/30/2026 and you do not wish to enroll him/her in kindergarten, please let us know in writing.

The form can be submitted to Shannon Johnson via email  or by dropping it off at the main office. Thank you for your assistance in helping us identify school-age children.

🥫Student Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Important Meal Kit Information:

  • Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
  • Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
  • Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
  • Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the  FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 11, 2026 for week of February 18, 2026
  • February 16, 2026for the week of February 23, 2026
  • February 23, 2026for the week of March 2, 2026
  • March 2, 2026 for the week of March 9, 2026
  • March 9, 2026 for the week of March 16, 2026

Forms must be submitted on time to receive meal kits for the following week.

🤒When Should Your Child Stay Home?

Help your student succeed in school by encouraging them to miss as few days as possible. However, do make sure your student stays home if they are sick. Visit the FCPS website for helpful insights regarding absences and how to work with your child and our school to minimize impacts on learning.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to let us know so we can provide assistance, if needed.
