TJHSST Senior Research Labs: Pathway Flow Chart

General Information

  • Senior Requirement:All students must complete a Senior Research Lab or the Research Practicum.
  • Prerequisites:All labs require a specific sequence of coursework - usually a Core Course, then Advanced Elective(s), then Lab.
  • Math/CS Options:Some labs utilize prerequisites from the Mathematics and Computer Science departments.

1. Combined Engineering Senior Research Lab

  • Step 1:Complete Design & Tech (IBET) (Grade 9).
  • Step 2:Complete Engineering Fundamentals (Grades 10–12).
  • Step 3:Complete ONE of the following semester electives:
    • Engineering Design
    • Architectural Design
    • Energy Systems 1
    • Prototyping 1
    • Robotics 1
    • Note: Only one course after Engineering Fundamentals is required to qualify for the lab.

2. Neuroscience Senior Research Lab

  • Path A (Psychology Track):
    • Take the semester courses Psychology: Brain & Behavior and then Neurobiology
  • Path B (Biology Track):
    • Take AP Biology and then Neurobiology
  • Path C (Artificial Intelligence Track):
    • Take AP Calculus BC before senior year.
    • Take AP Computer Science A+ Data Structures and then both semesters of Artificial Intelligence 1 and 2

3. Chemical Analysis & Nanochemistry Senior Research Lab

  • Take AP Chemistry or AP Biology

4. Biotechnology & Life Sciences Senior Research Lab

  • Take DNA Science 1

5. Oceanography & Geophysical Sciences Senior Research Lab

  • Take Marine Biology or Marine Science Techniques

6. Astronomy & Astrophysics Senior Research Lab

  • Take Astronomy: Solar System or Astronomy: Universe

7. Quantum Physics & Optics Senior Research Lab

  • Complete AP Physics C Mechanics and AP Physics C Electricity & Magnetism (as a two-year sequence or as one accelerated year)

8. Computer Systems Senior Research Lab

  • Path A:Take AP Calculus BC and Foundations of Computer Science
  • Path B: Take AP Computer Science A+ Data Structures and AP Statistics
  • Path C: Take AP Computer Science A+ Data Structures and both semesters of Artificial Intelligence 1 and 2

9. Mobile Web Senior Research Lab

  • Path A: Take AP Computers Science A+ Data Structures and Mobile App Development
  • Path B:Take AP Computers Science A+ Data Structures and Web App Development
  • Path C:Take AP Computers Science A+ Data Structures and any two post-AP Computer Science semester courses from the following: Artificial Intelligence 1 & 2, Computer Vision 1&2, Machine Learning 1&2, Mobile App Development, and Web App Development

Alternative Option

  • Research Practicum:Available to students who are eligible for any one of the Senior Research Labs.
