Families had a wonderful time creating together at Art Night at the Thomas Jefferson Library this past week! Did you miss Art Night? It’s OK! We have many more events coming up before the end of the year! Check out our website calendar to stay on top of it all!

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

As we move deeper into May, there is definitely a sense that we are entering the home stretch of another wonderful school year! This past week, students in grades 3–6 completed the bulk of their SOL testing with math assessments, and we continue to be so proud of the focus, perseverance, and effort our students have shown throughout the testing season. We are now entering our remediation and retake windows, where eligible students will receive additional support in math or science before having another opportunity to demonstrate their learning. Thank you to our teachers and staff for the tremendous care they continue to provide for every child during this process, and thank you to our families for your ongoing encouragement and support at home!

We also wrapped up our final early-release Wednesday of the school year this week. As many families may have heard, FCPS is still determining plans for next year’s calendar, including possible early-release days following a recent School Board resolution. At this time, we simply know there will likely be fewer early-release days next year, and we will be sure to share updates with our community as soon as we receive more information from the district.

Finally, thank you to the many families who joined us for Art Night at the Thomas Jefferson Library this past week! It was wonderful to see so many students proudly showing their creativity and enjoying time together as a community. Looking ahead, please remember that students will not have school May 25–27 for the extended Memorial Day weekend. Once we return, we will quickly roll into many of the special end-of-year celebrations and activities that make this season such a memorable one. Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support—we are excited to finish the year strong together!

In partnership,

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

Tech Talk May is Mental Health Awareness Month

You may be thinking: technology and mental health do not always go well together. In some ways, that is true. We are learning more about how tools like social media are designed to keep our attention for long periods of time.

At the same time, technology is part of our everyday lives, and it is not going away. As parents and caregivers, our goal is not to remove technology completely, but to help children learn how to use it in healthy and balanced ways.

During the month of May, we will explore simple, practical ways to use technology to support our well-being, while also setting healthy limits so it does not take over our time and attention.

Tech Talk: Using Technology to Support Mental Health

Technology can be more than entertainment. When used with purpose, it can also support children’s well-being.

There are many positive ways children can use technology. They can listen to music to relax, follow movement or exercise videos, practice mindfulness, or use creative tools to draw, build, and share ideas. Technology can also help children stay connected with family and friends.

Encouraging children to create, learn, and connect can help make screen time more meaningful. Small choices can turn technology into a helpful tool instead of a habit.

Healthy use is not about adding more screen time. It is about making better use of the time children already have.

Try this at home: Ask your child to show you something they created or learned using technology this week.

At Westlawn, we are here to support you and your family. If you have questions about your child’s well-being or would like mental health resources, please reach out to our Wellness Team . If you would like to talk about technology or healthy tech habits, Ms. Dushok is happy to help.

Is there a technology topic you want us to tackle in a future issue? Email your questions to Ms. Dushok (school based technology specialist) and Mr. Dinkins (technology support specialist).

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

What an incredible Teacher Appreciation Week we have had at Westlawn! I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our amazing PTA and all of the volunteers and families who helped make this week so meaningful for our staff. From the delicious treats and thoughtful wish list gifts to the kind notes, cards, and words of encouragement, our teachers truly felt celebrated and appreciated. It was a wonderful reminder of the caring and supportive community we have here at Westlawn, and I know our staff felt the love all week long!

As we head into another important week of learning, I also want to thank our students and families for their continued support during SOL testing. The last major day of testing will take place on Tuesday, May 12, when all students in grades 3–6 will take the Math SOL. Our students have been working hard all year, and we are proud of the effort and perseverance they have shown throughout the testing process.

Once SOLs are over, we will turn our attention again to the amazing end-of-year activities we have planned! One of those is our school musical, Joust! Our music team created a wish list of Joust! costumes, props, and decor . Please consider sponsoring something to help bring the show to life!

Thank you again for your partnership, encouragement, and continued support of our students and staff. Together, we are helping our Eagles finish the school year strong!

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

News Health and Safety at Westlawn: Suspected Norovirus Updates

Our custodial staff continues to clean classrooms and high-touch areas where sick students were present.

Only two products can kill norovirus: bleach and Virex. These products are too strong to use around students. Because of this, custodians can only use them at certain times. For example, custodians can use them in classrooms after students leave for the day. Custodians can also use them on lunch tables after all lunch periods end. They cannot use them between lunch periods.

Teachers are also asking students to wash their hands and use hand sanitizer more often. This helps reduce the spread of illness.

If a student vomits two or more times in 24 hours, the family should keep the student at home. The FCPS Attendance page explains when students should stay home or go to school.

To report an absence, families should not use TalkingPoints. Families should use one of the three approved absence reporting methods. The links are at the bottom of this newsletter.

We hope these prevention steps and the weekend break will help students and staff feel healthier next week.

Mind Matters Nurturing Leaders

Leadership is a valued characteristic for successful citizens. Here’s some ways you can empower and nurture your students to grow their leadership skills outside of the classroom.

  • Let your child plan a family game night, outing, or meal from start to finish.
  • Encourage them to help younger siblings or friends learn a new skill or activity.
  • Give them opportunities to solve real-life problems at home and explain their thinking.
  • Ask your child to lead part of a family discussion or help make group decisions.
  • Encourage creative projects like inventing a game, designing a mini business, or building something from recycled materials.
  • Have your child identify a community issue and create an improvement plan.
  • Praise perseverance, teamwork, and thoughtful risk-taking — not just correct answers.
  • Model leadership by showing active listening, responsibility, and kindness in everyday situations.

Screen Time Without the Struggle

Setting limits around technology can be challenging for many families. Instead of focusing only on “how much,” it can help to focus on when and how technology is used.

Simple routines can make a big difference. For example, families might choose tech-free times, such as during meals or before bedtime. Clear and predictable routines help children know what to expect and can reduce daily conflicts.

It can also help to involve children in creating these routines. When children understand the reasons behind limits, they are more likely to follow them.

Healthy boundaries are not about being perfect. They are about creating a routine that works for your family and supports your child’s well-being.

Try this at home: Choose one small change, such as a tech-free meal or a set “device off” time each evening, and try it for one week.

As we move into an important stretch of the school year, our students have already begun showing their focus and determination with the start of SOL testing this week—beginning with our fifth graders taking the reading SOL! I am so proud of the way our students are approaching these assessments with confidence and perseverance. On Tuesday, May 5, our fifth graders will take the science SOL, while students in grades 3, 4, and 6 will complete their reading SOL. We are grateful for the continued partnership of our families during this time—your support, encouragement, and flexibility truly make a difference in helping our students do their very best. Learn more about SOL testing at Westlawn .

Next week also brings one of my favorite celebrations of the year—Teacher Appreciation Week from May 4–8! Our PTA has planned a thoughtful and joyful week to honor our incredible staff. If you’d like to contribute, there are opportunities to donate items or help support the events , and staff wish lists are now available on our website. You’ll find everything from classroom supplies to special items like decorations for our 6th grade promotion ceremony. At the same time, I want to emphasize that appreciation does not need to come with a cost—a heartfelt note, a drawing, or a kind email recognizing a staff member goes a long way and means so much.

As we look ahead, we’re also excited to end the year with spirit and pride! On June 17, we’ll celebrate our final Fun Clothing Wednesday with a Westlawn Colors Day. If your child doesn’t yet have Westlawn gear, our online store is open and ready!

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and for helping make Westlawn such a special place to learn and grow!

News April: Celebrating Autism Acceptance Month

This April, our school community proudly celebrated Autism Acceptance Month. While the month has come to a close, the lessons of inclusion, respect, and belonging continue every day in our classrooms.

How Our Students Participated

Throughout the month, students engaged in meaningful discussions about neurodivergence—the idea that all brains work differently and that these differences are a natural and valuable part of the human experience. Here is how we brought these concepts to life:

  • The Infinity Symbol: Students decorated infinity symbols, which represent the vast spectrum of experiences and the infinite possibilities within the autistic community.
  • Inclusion Banners: We created interactive posters and banners where students shared, in their own words, what inclusion means to them.
  • Kindness & Community: Our lessons focused on how we can all be better friends by leading with kindness and ensuring everyone feels they have a seat at the table.
Understanding Communication & Behavior

At our school, we celebrate the many ways students share their ideas and feelings. Acceptance means understanding that "one size does not fit all" when it comes to interaction.

  • Diverse Voices:We have many students who communicate in unique ways! Some use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)devices—like tablets that speak for them—while others use visual schedules and picture boards to express their needs.
  • Behavior as Communication:We teach our students that sometimes, behavior is a form of communication. When a peer interacts differently or needs extra space, it is an opportunity for us to respond with patience and support rather than judgment.
Continuing the Conversation at Home

Inclusion doesn’t stop at the school gates. We encourage you to talk with your children about how to be inclusive members of the community. You might ask:

  1. "How can you make sure a friend who communicates differently feels included at recess?"
  2. "What is one thing that makes your brain unique, and what is one thing you appreciate about how someone else thinks?"
  3. "How can we show respect to people who experience the world differently than we do?"

By fostering a culture of acceptance over awareness, we ensure that every student—regardless of how they think, move, or speak—is a valued member of our family.

Family Tip: When you see someone using a communication device or acting differently in public, use it as a moment to model respect. Remind your children that different isn't "broken"—it’s just different!

Mind Matters Spring Screening

It’s May, so that must mean it’s time to consider school-based AAP services for all students!

Did you know that in May every student is evaluated using multiple measures to determine AAP service needs? It’s true! Teachers on the local AAP screening committee discuss if a student might show a need for subject-specific, or part-time services. Additionally, a Young Scholars designation is considered for these students.

Letters come home to families in backpack mail by early June if the student is found eligible.

If you have questions, email our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher Mrs. Maxwell or send her a TalkingPoints.

What Is Healthy Tech Use?

When we think about children and technology, the first question is often: “How much screen time is too much?” A more helpful question might be: “How is my child using technology?”

Not all screen time is the same. Some uses are passive, like scrolling or watching for long periods of time. Other uses are active, like creating, learning, or connecting with others. Both can have a place, but balance is important.

Healthy technology use is not about removing devices completely. It is about helping children learn to use technology with purpose. This includes taking breaks, choosing meaningful activities, and making time for offline play, rest, and family connection.

Try this at home:Ask your child, “How did this activity make you feel?” This simple question can help children start to notice when technology is helping them—and when it may be time for a break.

The Feather Report

Volume 2, Issue 32

Did you get a yummy treat at the bake sale during the special election this week? The sixth grade students running the bake sale are part of a new service-learning initiative we began this year. Through this work, students build stronger connections within their community while pursuing causes they are passionate about. This project also allowed them to begin earning their required service hours: 5 out of 40 total hours needed to graduate with a Service-Learning Honor and wear a cord at their high school graduation. As for Tuesday’s bake sale results? Our students earned $1000 to donate to the animal shelter!

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

As we head into an important stretch of the school year, I want to share two timely updates with our Westlawn community—one exciting and one essential for the weeks ahead!

First, this is the last call to order your yearbook online! Our yearbooks are already more than halfway sold out, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. Ordering online is the only way to guarantee your child will have a copy of this year’s memories to treasure. If you haven’t yet placed your order, please visit ybpay.com and use code 15398626. We would love for every student to have this special keepsake in hand at the end of the year!

At the same time, we are heading into the heart of SOL testing, which begins next week. Over the next three Tuesdays, a subset of our students will be participating in these important assessments. Detailed information about testing dates, retakes, and logistics is available on our website , and we encourage families to review it carefully. Specific tests and the affected grade levels are detailed in our calendar below. We are grateful for your partnership in helping students arrive well-rested and ready, and for scheduling appointments around these key dates whenever possible.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and collaboration. Together, we are setting our students up for success and celebrating all they’ve accomplished this year!

In partnership,

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

Mind Matters Earth Week

As a proud Virginia Naturally recognized school, this week Westlawn is celebrating Earth Week!

On Thursday we dedicated our bench we received after collecting 1,000 pounds of soft plastics to recycle! A huge thank you goes out to our community for donating the plastic to make it possible, especially the staff at the FCPS HR department who donated over half of the plastic needed! Also, thanks to the Boy Scouts who put the bench together for us and Mr. Maxwell for installing it outside. The bench has been living inside for a few months and now it proudly stands near our flagpole, be sure to check it out ( Instagram or Facebook )!

Here’s some ideas to help you find more ways to celebrate at home.

Above all else, we are encouraging students to put down the screens and get outside and enjoy the spring weather!

Photo of the Week: Thank a Teacher with a Taco

Amazing news, Westlawn community! Your hard work paid off, and we are now one of the 10 finalists to win a taco party for staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, courtesy of bartaco! Now we need your vote! Keep reading: the link to the voting form is in the Leadership Ledger.

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

This week, I was reminded once again of the power of community here at Westlawn! In just under a week, our sharing fridge in the cafeteria stopped working, and we suddenly lost the space students use to set aside perishable food for hungry peers. We shared the need on social media and in our newsletter, and one of our wonderful Westlawn parents stepped in right away. A huge thank you to Jose Benitez, father to Jose in Ms. Roundtree’s room, for generously donating a new fridge so our food sharing program could continue without missing a beat! That kind of support is extraordinary, and it speaks so clearly to the heart of this community.

We also want to encourage everyone to help us get tacos! Westlawn is one of just ten schools across the United States in the final round of bartaco’s Teacher Appreciation contest, and we need your votes. Please vote for Westlawn and share this form with friends and family so they can vote for Westlawn, too!

Finally, a reminder that SOL testing is starting soon. We have a comprehensive article on our website  that includes testing logistics and helpful tips for families to support students at home. Here are the spring testing dates for reference:

  • April 28: 5th Grade Reading
  • May 5: 5th Grade Science and 3rd, 4th, and 6th Grade Reading
  • May 12: 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Math (including Algebra 1)

Thank you for partnering with us as we prepare our students to do their very best!

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

Tech Talk What happened to the photo frames?

You may have noticed that the frames for the Photo of the Week and the Soaring Staff Spotlight look different this week. These changes follow new requirements in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that take effect next Friday, April 24. In short, these requirements affect anything a school or teacher shares digitally, including email, the website, social media, and this newsletter.

Here are some examples of changes you may notice:

  • Images that contain text cannot be shared digitally.
  • Videos must include captions (including short videos and reels).
  • Links should be placed on descriptive text, not on phrases like “click here.”
  • Images must include alt text (text that describes the image).
What does this mean for Westlawn?

When we first learned about the upcoming ADA changes, we began preparing early. We stopped posting PDFs on our website. We asked our partners to send information about extracurricular activities as plain text instead of sending flyers as attachments. We improved how we write links by avoiding phrases like “click here” as the only linked text. We also tested different ways to write social media captions.

We have also used ChatGPT as a tool to support compliance. When we receive flyers for events, we often upload them into ChatGPT and ask it to create a plain text version for online use. We also use it to write alt text for images and to revise text so it is easier for automatic translation tools to translate accurately.

What does this mean for families?

We believe these changes will improve communication. Many of our families speak languages other than English at home. We have always tried to make sure our communication is clear for everyone. These ADA requirements support that goal.

Is there a technology topic you want us to tackle in a future issue? Email your questions to Ms. Dushok (school based technology specialist) and Mr. Dinkins (technology support specialist).

Photo of the Week: the beautiful weather means we are back to gardening in the Discovery Area! Kindergarten students are particularly fond of being helpful when it comes to weeding, mulching, and compositing, and the best part of the activity is when they find long, fat worms!

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and joyful Spring Break—we are excited to return together and officially begin our 4th quarter with so much learning, growth, and celebration still ahead of us!

It was wonderful to see such an incredible turnout at our Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday. Meeting our newest families and welcoming our future Eagles is always a special milestone, and we are already looking forward to the Class of 2039 joining us! As a reminder, our Westlawn spirit wear shop is open year-round. For families with incoming kindergarteners, now is a great time to order a shirt so your child can proudly represent Westlawn and build excitement for their first day.

A big thank you to our PTA and our outstanding PE team for organizing another fantastic Laps for Learning event this week. This is our PTA’s largest fundraiser of the year, and it was inspiring to see such strong participation and school spirit. If you missed the event or would still like to contribute, please keep an eye on upcoming opportunities to support our school community.

We are also thrilled to continue expanding our after-school offerings. This year’s lacrosse and basketball programs have filled up quickly, and we hope to grow these opportunities even further in the future. If you or someone you know is interested in supporting extracurricular programming, we would love to connect!

Finally, we need your help—Westlawn has a chance to win free tacos for our staff through a Bartaco contest! Be sure to nominate our school and help us make it to the next round. Here is the info you need for the nomination:

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are making this final quarter a strong and memorable one for all of our students!

As required by the Code of VA , parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend at a Virginia public school.

In addition, all students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older;
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older;
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents or guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with your child’s healthcare provider now to avoid the rush this summer. Immunization appointments are available. Engage with Westlawn Donate a Sharing Fridge

Sadly, after approximately two years of solid use, the sharing fridge in our cafeteria died earlier this week. A generous family donated the fridge to us at the start of the 2024-2025 school year, and we were both very grateful for the donation and sad that it no longer works. We are hoping someone else in our community might be able to help us acquire a new sharing fridge. Students use the sharing fridge each day by donating extra perishable food from their lunch for other students to take after they finish their own lunch and are still hungry. The sharing fridge is a “dorm size” refrigerator, and does not need to have a separate freezer. If you are able to help us get a new sharing fridge, please contact Ms. Maxwell via email or via TalkingPoints.

Tech Talk Assistive Technology

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and at Westlawn we are celebrating neurodiversity in our community. There are posters in the cafeteria, fresh staff t-shirts, and information being shared by teachers who lead our autism classrooms. For this issue of The Feather Report , we are going to focus on assistive technology.

Assistive technology is any kind of technology that is used to maintain or improve the functional capabilities, independence, and quality of life for people with disabilities (or for senior citizens). It includes low-tech items such as walkers and high-tech items such as Cochlear devices. It also includes an entire suite of computers or computer-like devices and their associated software and apps.

Some people with autism, including several students at Westlawn, use special autism speech device tablets to communicate. These tablets, which fall under the label of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools, feature a series of pictures of items or actions that students can point to when they want to share information with another person. Some AAC tools also feature text alongside pictures or instead of pictures.

What’s really neat about AAC tools is that--although they are considered assistive technology --it does not necessarily mean that they are electronic! Our playground at Westlawn features a communication board printed on a large canvas sheet that is zip-tied to the fence. The communication board allows students on the playground to communicate with each other by pointing at pictures to share their thoughts and requests with each other. Learn more about our playground communication board thanks to our Early Autism Classroom teacher Ms. Marshall .

Photo of the Week: Hang in there! Spring Break is here! Students have been enjoying the beautiful weather that we have had during recess for the past couple of weeks. We hope all students have safe and relaxing Spring Breaks with plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors!

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

As we wrap up an incredible third quarter and look ahead to Spring Break, I can’t help but feel proud of all that our students, staff, and families have accomplished together! This time of year offers a wonderful opportunity to pause, reflect, and recharge. I hope each of you is able to enjoy a safe, restful Spring Break filled with moments of joy and relaxation. When we return, we’ll step into the final quarter of the school year—ready to finish strong and continue the amazing momentum we’ve built as a community!

Even as we take time to rest, I know many of our students are already thinking ahead with excitement—especially with our Talent Show coming up on May 7! If your child is eager to shine on stage, Spring Break is a great time to begin practicing. Be sure to sign up for an audition slot on April 20 or April 23 if they’re ready to share their talents with us. We can’t wait to see the creativity and confidence our students will bring!

A few friendly reminders as we head into the break: Yearbook orders are now open, and this is a special way to capture the memories of this school year. Orders are due by May 1 to guarantee a copy. Order at ybpay.com with code 15398626. Also, please note that FCPS has updated the calendar—there will be no school for students on April 21 due to a teacher workday, and April 22 will now be a full day of school.

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. I wish you all a wonderful Spring Break, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for a strong finish to the year!

In partnership,

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

LEAP Into Reading this Spring Break

Did you know that all Fairfax County Public School students can check out books from the Fairfax County Public Library system, even if they don’t have a library card? It’s true! All students can check out a limited number of books or other materials, simply by providing their name! FCPS collaborates with FCPL to make this possible through the LEAP program . The closest library that Westlawn students can access is the Thomas Jefferson Library , which is open every day except Sunday.

Mind Matters Partnerships Make it Possible

Did your student enjoy a Fall or Spring STEAM Academy club? We are able to offer those free of charge thanks to our amazing partnership with Northrop Grumman. Their funding also helps with other things at Westlawn like our Kodable and Mystery Science subscriptions and supplies for Mrs. Winters’ STEAM lab. They also send volunteers to some of our events!

As you can see, community partnerships like this are so valuable so we can offer things above and beyond normal FCPS funding, and keep things free or low-cost if possible. If your family has connections to businesses, organizations, or community groups that may be interested in partnering with our school, we would love to hear from you! These partnerships make a meaningful difference for our students, and we are always looking to grow our network of support. Please email Gretchen Maxwell or send her a TalkingPoints message.

Tech Talk Happy National AI Literacy Day!

Friday, March 27, 2026 is National AI Literacy Day! The purpose of the day is to draw attention to AI and support people in understanding how to use AI purposefully and ethically.

Right now in FCPS there are many discussions happening about AI, too! We anticipate regulations regarding student use of AI to be released this summer, and we are eager to see how they will affect teaching and learning at Westlawn. Learn more about AI in FCPS .

In the meantime, we encourage families to learn about AI. If you’re looking for a place to start, we recommend diving into comparing and contrasting the things that AI can do versus the things that humans can do. People of all ages and backgrounds can easily join this discussion, and it is often one that produces many questions and curiosities. Families can then seek answers to those questions together!

In honor of National AI Literacy Day and in honor of Reading Month, we will leave you with some great reads about AI that you can peruse over Spring Break!

Is there a technology topic you want us to tackle in a future issue? Email your questions to Ms. Dushok (school based technology specialist) and Mr. Dinkins (technology support specialist).

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

As we look ahead to the final stretch of the school year, I want to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to our entire community for your flexibility and partnership during Monday’s early release due to the forecasted storms. Moments like these remind me just how strong and responsive the Westlawn community is. I also want to echo the message shared earlier this week—our students and staff handled the tornado watch with calm, focus, and care. Students followed protocols, listened closely to staff, and continued learning even as we adjusted spaces to prioritize safety. I could not be more proud of how everyone came together with student well-being at the center of every decision.

As we move forward, we have several important dates on the horizon. Quarter 3 will come to a close on Thursday, March 27, which will be a 2-hour early release day. This leads directly into Spring Break from March 30 through April 3, followed by a teacher workday on Monday, April 6. When we return, we will begin the final quarter of the school year—a time filled with both important academic milestones, including standardized assessments, and many of our most cherished community events like the spring musical, talent show, field day, and spring concert.

We are excited for all that lies ahead and look forward to celebrating these moments together. As event dates are finalized, they will be added to our website calendar , and I encourage families to check regularly when planning appointments or other activities. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership—it makes all the difference for our students!

News Illness and Attendance Trivia

Test your knowledge about illness and attendance!

  1. True or false: your child should stay home for 24 hours after starting antibiotics if they are diagnosed with strep throat.
  2. True or false: if your child vomits, even once, then they must stay at home until at least 24 hours have passed since the last episode of vomiting.
  3. True or false: if your child has lice, they must stay home for the duration of the entire treatment.

Believe it or not, the answer to all of these trivia questions is false! Many of the general standards for illness and absence that we adults experienced as students are outdated. Medical science and research have provided us with a better understanding of antibiotics and their efficacy, childhood illness, and the duration of infectious periods. FCPS continually monitors this research and implements the recommendations that come from the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics. You can check out the latest guidelines for illness and attendance on the Can My Child Go to School? webpage .

Tech Talk Tracking Books and Other Reading Tips from Our Families

A few weeks ago we shared reading tracker tips from our Westlawn staff as a way to celebrate reading this month! We asked families to share their best tips, and we heard back from a few of you!

“I use Libby and Goodreads ! Effie and I are currently competing in our 2026 challenge and she’s going to have to up her game to have any chance at beating me. Cozzy loves listening to audiobooks through Libby so we use that to track her reading.” -Jenny Erwin

“I am an expert in tracking down books, a skill that I developed in response to the requests from my three readers! Besides using the library (and Libby ), I also like to visit local thrift stores such as Unique . They have many popular new releases and a large kid’s section with great deals! I also enjoy popping out of my car when I spot a Little Free Library to see what’s available!” -Lindsey Williams

Soaring Staff Spotlight

This week the Soaring Staff Spotlight is on Sydney Riffe!

Ms. Riffeis a 5th grade classroom teacher at Westlawn. Let’s learn more about Ms. Riffe!

What was your favorite subject in school?

Writing! Which is now my favorite subject to teach.

What is your favorite children’s book?

Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, or F ront Desk by Kelly Yang (the entire series is awesome).

What is one talent or skill you have that most people don’t know about?

I am an intensely competitive crafter. I wouldn't exactly call myself crafty in general, but when it becomes a competition, I am 150% on every detail. Halloween costumes, Easter eggs, cookie decorating, you name it. I've been known to spend hours decorating a single Christmas cookie for my family cookie competition.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Ask for the help you need.

If you weren’t in education, what other job would you want?

In a perfect world, I would be living in a Mediterranean climate teaching pool-side fitness classes at a resort, then running karaoke nights in the evening.

What is your favorite holiday?

MY BIRTHDAY! I am a huge birthday diva, no apologies.

What is your favorite family-friendly video game?

MarioKart. Original green Yoshi. Choco Mountain.

If you could instantly learn a new skill, what would it be?

I LOVE singing. Love it. But I'd love to be GOOD at it. So does learning to have a good singing voice count? I also wish I could play every sport proficiently. Not at an expert level, but enough to join a pick up game.

What is one thing that always makes your day better?

Exercise! A full workout or a long walk outside- getting my body moving always boosts my mood.

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

As we move deeper into the spring semester, I want to take a moment to focus on something that makes a tremendous difference in your child’s success—consistent attendance. Every school day is filled with meaningful learning, collaboration, and connection, and even missing just a day here or there can add up quickly. In our News section we have a special feature about chronic absenteeism that we crafted after observing our data here at Westlawn and getting feedback from families. Check it out--you might learn something new!

I also want to encourage every family to take a few minutes to complete the bi-annual Family Engagement Survey . Your feedback truly matters. It helps us reflect, grow, and ensure we are meeting the needs of our diverse and wonderful community. We value your voice and your partnership, and we carefully review the data shared with us.

Please note there will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, due to the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may still proceed as scheduled, so please stay connected with your coaches and sponsors for details.

Finally, our partners at Creative Cauldron have extended an invitation to families to explore their Spring Break Camp . The one-week musical theater camp will be offered at their location at 127 East Broad Street, and scholarships are available for families in need. Call Laura Connors Hull at 703-436-9948 for more information about this opportunity.

Thank you for your continued partnership, your support, and the many ways you show up for Westlawn each day. Together, we make our school community stronger!

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

Chronic Absenteeism Update

Our chronic absenteeism rate is currently at 9.4%, and as a school we have a goal to keep it under 11%this year. Based on patterns we are noticing and conversations we have had with families, here are some tips that might help!

  • If your child has a runny nose, send them to school! Learn about which conditions require a child to stay home . Note that FCPS regularly updates the requirements for attendance for each condition. For example, students with strep throat used to have to stay home for 24 hours after they started taking antibiotics. Now they only need to stay home for 12 hours after taking antibiotics! The updates to the attendance requirements are based on new and expanding scientific research, and there are links to it on the bottom of the page.
  • Note: even if your child is sick and has an “ excused ” absence, it still registers as an absence. Once upon a time excused absences were “forgiven” and did not count against the student or the school. (That might have been the reality when you were a student!) However, currently all absences count against the student and the school. This is a decision that comes from the state, not from FCPS or from Westlawn. It does not matter if your child was at the doctor or on vacation; every absence is totalled and applied to your child. When your child reaches enough absences, they are labeled “chronically absent.” At the end of the year, the total percent of students considered “chronically absent” is considered along with other metrics, such as standardized test scores, and results in Westlawn receiving a school rating.
  • Try to make doctor’s appointments at the start or end of the day whenever possible. If your child attends for part of the day, even if it is only for a few hours, it does not count as missing school. Therefore it also does not count toward being chronically absent! Plus, at Westlawn we learn “from bell to bell.” That means your child will still be learning something during the time they are in school on any given day.
  • Do you have transportation issues? For example, if your child misses the morning bus due to a doctor appointment, then they can’t get to school after that? Services like Uber Health can help get your child from the doctor to school and they work with most insurance. If you need help getting this service set up, please call our main office. Ms. Sanchez has helped at least one family with this service and would be happy to help others!
  • Finally, if your child goes to the doctor, get a doctor’s note! Sometimes one is required. And while “excused” absences aren’t really excused when it comes to counting missed days for chronic absenteeism, having a history of doctor appointments or illness helps us identify which students or families might need more support in other ways.

As always, we are here for you! We know that healthy, happy students make the best learners, and we are eager to partner with you to ensure that your child is at Westlawn, healthy and on time, as much as possible!

Still Collecting Parent Consent!

If you have a student in grades 3-6, we are continuing to collect your consent to give your child an SOL retake assessment if their first assessment has an eligible score. We appreciate those families who have provided consent via the Digital Consent Portal, and those who have quickly replied to teachers’ TalkingPoints messages! If you have questions about this, or think you might need to provide consent, please reach out to Ms. Dushok via email or TalkingPoints.

The Feather Report

Volume 2, Issue 26

Photo of the Week: At long last, kindergarten students began to bring home their sculptures this week! Working with clay is one of the longest projects that kindergarten students do in art during the course of the year. There are numerous steps, from molding the sculpture to glazing it, with several firings in the kiln along the way. It’s always a proud day when students can bring home their colorful creations to share with their families!

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

As we head into a stretch filled with exciting opportunities and important planning for the months ahead, I’m reminded of how much there is to look forward to in our Westlawn community! This week’s newsletter is packed with “looking ahead” moments—from academic pathways to summer experiences—each one reflecting the care and intention we put into supporting our students’ growth.

We’ve shared the criteria for students interested in taking Algebra 1 Honors in 7th grade, and I encourage families to review that information closely. These decisions are important milestones, and we are committed to partnering with you every step of the way. You’ll also find information about summer camps and spring break activities—great ways to keep our Eagles engaged, curious, and connected beyond the school day. And while June may feel far away, now is the perfect time to order your yearbook! Each year, these books become treasured keepsakes filled with memories of friendships, milestones, and joyful learning.

We were also honored to welcome our school board representative, Dr. Ricardy Anderson, for a visit this week. It’s always a point of pride to showcase the incredible students and staff who make Westlawn so special! Finally, be sure to check out this week’s Tech Talk column, where we celebrate the voices of our staff as they share how they keep track of their reading. It’s a wonderful reminder that our educators are lifelong learners, too. As we celebrate reading this month, we also hope to see you at our newest family event, Light Up the Night with Literacy, on Wednesday next week after school.

Thank you for continuing to be such engaged, supportive partners. Together, we make Westlawn a place where every child—and every voice—matters!

In partnership,

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

Algebra 1 Honors for Rising 7th Graders

FCPS recently released guidance describing the students who will qualify for Algebra 1 Honors in seventh grade. From the Honors, Grades 7-8 web page : Students may enroll in Algebra 1 Honors in 7th grade if they have completed Math 6 Advanced and one of the following:

  • Pass Advanced (500+) on the Spring 2026 Grade 7 Math SOL Test
  • Pass Proficient (400-499) on the Spring 2026 Grade 7 Math SOL Test and Pass Proficient (400-499) on the Spring 2025 Grade 6 Math SOL Test
  • Pass Proficient (400-499) on the Spring 2026 Grade 7 Math SOL Test and Pass Advanced (500+) on the Spring 2025 Grade 5 Math SOL Test

Please note that students have not yet taken the Spring 2026 math SOL tests and will not do so until May, with scores available shortly after the test, which is scheduled for May 12. Students who have Ms. Stephenson for math will be taking the Math 7 SOL Test, and their score from that test and possibly their Spring 2025 test will determine their eligibility for Algebra 1 Honors next year.

If your child is a sixth grade student and does not have Ms. Stephenson for math, then they will be taking the Math 6 SOL Test. These students are not eligible for Algebra 1 Honors next year, but are still on track to take Algebra 1 in 8th grade.

Families with questions about their child’s math placement in Luther Jackson MS are encouraged to contact Ms. Jacoby .

Rooted in Resilience, Echoes of Excellence: FCPS’ Second Annual Black History Month Celebration

The spirit of heritage and the promise of the future filled the air at Carter G. Woodson High School as FCPS held its second annual Black History Month Celebration with the theme, Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence. This year’s event was especially significant as it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the movement that became Black History Month.

Students from across the division took center stage as the true "echoes" of this excellence. The program featured student-led Moments of Pride that connected local and national history to contemporary achievements. A spirited keynote speech was delivered by Vernon Walton, senior pastor at the First Baptist Church of Vienna. Another highlight of the night was the FCPS Black Excellence video tribute .

Mind Matters Smart Thinking in Everyday Moments

Did you know some of the best learning moments can happen during everyday activities like grocery shopping, cooking dinner, or riding in the car?

When you’re at the grocery store, try asking:

  • “How do you know which item is the better deal?” (math)
  • “Why do you think the milk is kept in the back?” (marketing)

While cooking:

  • “Why do you think the dough rises?” (science)
  • “What steps should we do first?” (logic)

In the car:

  • “How many different shapes can you find on buildings?” (math, art)
  • “How could we solve that problem differently?” (social)

While reading together:

  • “What do you predict will happen next in the story?” (literacy)
  • “Where do you think this takes place?” (literacy)

These simple conversations build vocabulary, problem-solving skills, reasoning, and creativity. When children explain their thinking, their brains grow stronger connections. Best of all, it doesn’t take extra time — just a few thoughtful questions.

Dr. Anderson Visited Westlawn

This past week we had a visit from our school board representative, Dr. Ricardy Anderson ! Students in the full-time AAP classrooms have been learning about advocacy and activism over the past few years when they vertically meet. This year they spent time adding to their background knowledge about government structures—both local and national. Additionally, they were able to learn about teen activist Barabara Johns who was recently honored with a new statue at the Capitol.

Teachers helped students engage in a letter-writing campaign to Dr. Anderson where they shared how they learned how actions can influence change in their communities. As a result of that campaign Dr. Anderson came to speak to students about her passion for education and her job as a school board member. She also set up a Town Hall for the students and they asked her questions about everything from her hobbies to the effects that the federal Department of Education changes have had on her role. Also, thanks to the students and their teachers, Dr. Anderson helped find funding for a trip to the Capitol and she will be joining them on that trip!

Thank you, Dr. Anderson, for helping to make social studies and language arts come to life for our Eagles! You can also see more photos that we shared on social media earlier this week .

Tech Talk Reading for Grownups

As educators we know that students who have access to books at home tend to be better readers, and we know that behavior modeled by the adults in the house tends to be replicated by the children in the house. In other words: having your children see you reading, while having access to books of their own, is a great way to make sure you raise a good reader!

Of course, if you are not already a big reader, it can be a bit daunting to start. We asked our staff to share their favorite ways that they keep track of their reading--both using technology and otherwise--to give you some inspiration! ( Because let’s face it--if you have a small child, keeping track of your reading is something that you totally cannot just remember in your brain! ) Whether you are already a library power-user or you aspire to add more reading to your day, we are sure you’ll find a great idea!

Ms. Carpenter: “I keep a stack on my nightstand, each time I finish a book, another one gets added. 😊 Old school tracking!”

Ms. Dushok: “I use The StoryGraph to keep track of my reading and I really like the ability to compare my reading year over year to see my own growth in terms of pages and books completed each year. I originally picked The Storygraph because I loved the graphics it generated at year-end to share on social media, and browsing friends’ graphics is one way that I discover books to add to my wish list. After I became a user, I also discovered that The Storygraph is an independent, Black woman-owned company, and it made me feel even better about my tracking app choice.”

Ms. Flegal: “I use The StoryGraph and Libby to track my reading. I like The StoryGraph because of the tracking, editing, and recommendation features. The StoryGraph has better timeline editing than Goodreads (it’s easy to change the date you started or finished reading, change editions/versions, etc.), you can easily submit new books if it doesn’t already have them, etc. It also has fun reading challenges like read across Africa, read from all the countries in the Americas (inspired by Bad Bunny’s God bless America list), every genre imaginable, etc. You can also set book/pages/minutes goals for the year and check your progress easily. I still use Goodreads as a backup.

'I also use Libby. Almost all the books I read from the library (I save THOUSANDS of dollars a year by using the library), and all of my ebooks are through Libby. It doesn’t store your book history (most public libraries don’t for privacy purposes), but it’s easy to track my current checkouts, holds, requests, and waitlists.”

Ms. Heyer: “Since I get most of my books from the public library, I track my books read in the Libby app (ebooks) or through my FCPL account.”

Ms. Jacoby: “I use Goodreads and I like meeting my reading goal each year, which is the number of books I want to read. I also like seeing what my friends and coworkers are reading!”

Ms. Johnson: “I use Goodreads to help track my reading! The main thing that I like about it is that it automatically connects with my Kindle app – so I don’t even have to worry about remembering to add that I started (or finished) a book. At the beginning of each year, I create a reading goal for the number of books I’d like to read and it will track the number for me as the year progresses. I also like that you can have “friends” on the app and it is one of the main ways my family stays connected to see what everyone has been reading.”

Ms. Nicolai: “I keep track of the books I read on the app Goodreads . I love to rate the book and see how others like it after I am done reading! I have always loved to read and one of my 2026 resolutions was to read every night before I go to bed.”

Ms. Riffe: “I use a bookmark that looks like a bookshelf full of books with no titles. When I finish one, I write the title on the shelf. I start a new one each year. I like it because it is super satisfying to fill in a book- it’s like I’m checking off a to-do list! I also love how pretty the bookmark is, and I like going back to look at former years and remembering what I’ve read.”

Ms. Rodgers: “I use The StoryGraph to keep track of my books read and I love that I can see how my reading changes by month. I also love the audiobook to traditional book graph.”

Ms. Thomas: “I use Goodreads , but it’s not great and hasn’t had any major updates in years. I also tried Fable for a while and liked that it could migrate my Goodreads data, but I’m still looking for the perfect reading platform!”

Ms. Whaley: “I started using The StoryGraph this year because I love graphs and the different data it collects, but I also use Goodreads because I have used it for years and I don’t want to transfer all my reading over. I also follow friends and instagrammers on Goodreads to get recommendations. I also get book recommendations by the “challenges” Goodreads have. I’m very competitive and I like to get all the badges, so it forces me to read books that I wouldn’t have necessarily picked up in the first place. I keep track of books I want to read mostly on Libby or my basket of unread books next to my bed. I have the maximum number of books on hold on Libby at any given time, and I have a label of “to be borrowed” for the ones I’ll put on hold once a space opens up. In 2025, I kept track of my reading by crocheting a square in the colors of the cover of the book and putting them together to make a blanket. (I say that as if I actually finished that project—I have 7 more squares to go!)”

Ms. Michelle White: “Currently, I’m reading Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping . I keep track of my reading on a piece of paper by writing down how many pages I read each time I sit down. I try to read at least one more page than the time before — if I read 5 pages yesterday, I aim for 6 or more today. I love that it challenges me to grow a little each day and keeps me motivated to finish the book!”

Families--now it’s your turn! How do you keep track of your reading, or help your child keep track of theirs? We would love to feature your answers in next week’s Feather Report ! Please share your great ideas with Ms. Dushok via email or TalkingPoints. (And don’t worry--she will send out a reminder via TalkingPoints, too!)

Is there a technology topic you want us to tackle in a future issue? Email your questions to Ms. Dushok (school based technology specialist) and Mr. Dinkins (technology support specialist).

The Feather Report

Volume 2, Issue 25

Each day, students in Ms. Whaley’s first grade classroom practice their writing on individual whiteboards. For each lesson, Ms. Whaley observes students using the whiteboards and selects one student to write the phrases on sentence strips using a special pink lap desk. The sentence strips are then displayed for a whole-class editing lesson later in the week.

To help make this year’s book even more meaningful, we would love your help! If you have photos of students participating in Westlawn events this year, please consider sharing them with us. Whether it’s a classroom celebration, a field trip, or a special school event, your pictures help tell the story of our community. Please send any photos to Ms. Dushok via TalkingPoints, and we’ll do our best to include as many as possible. Thank you for partnering with us to make this keepsake truly representative of our amazing students!

As we turn the calendar to March, we are also looking forward to celebrating the joy of reading all month long. Reading opens doors, sparks imagination, and builds lifelong learners—and we can’t wait to highlight that excitement throughout our school. Thank you for continuing to support learning at home and for being such an important part of the Westlawn family. Together, we are making this a year to remember!

Support Our Schools on Give-Education Day – March 4!

On March 4, families are invited to support Educate Fairfax , the official nonprofit foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools. Educate Fairfax funds classroom innovation grants, provides essential supplies, supports student scholarships, and helps meet critical needs across our schools. Last fall, 129 grants benefited more than 47,000 students.

Westlawn has directly benefited from Educate Fairfax grants! Last year, our librarian Ms. Heyer received funding to purchase additional Playaways for students, and this year Ms. Roundtree was awarded a grant to support her Global Classroom Project.

Every gift makes a difference. Consider making a donation and inviting your employer or company to join as a community partner.

Mind Matters Life Skills 101

In order for students to achieve success, there are many non-academic activities that we can help students master. As an example, this month young scholars have been learning how to advocate for themselves. Westlawn is an AVID school and we work on helping students with executive function skills such as organization. Teachers embed these skills into their lessons daily, but parents can help too! Here’s an example of the kinds of things students can learn in elementary school that will help them function in the world in Middle School, High School, and beyond.

  • How to try something independently for a while without giving up
  • How to respectfully ask a teacher for help (in person and email)
  • How to keep track of personal belongings, organize a backpack and desk, and use a planner or agenda
  • How to follow multi-step directions independently
  • How to read and follow a simple schedule and manage time (finish work within a given time, transition between tasks)
  • How to respectfully disagree or solve small conflicts with peers and work productively with a partner or small group
  • How to take responsibility for mistakes and make a plan to fix them
  • Basic digital responsibility (logging in independently, appropriate online behavior)
  • Knowing contact information for parents/guardians, including their own address and adults’ cell phone numbers
Tech Talk Digital Stories for Kids

It’s almost March, and we are ready to celebrate reading! Westlawn students have access to multiple resources that will actually read stories to them! Most of these resources are available on the Student Technology Links section of our website, under the category Reading . Here are our favorites:

  • myOn: myOn is a digital library with hundreds of interactive books that students can read independently or have read aloud to them.
  • PebbleGo: PebbleGo is an easy-to-use research database with read-aloud articles, especially great for younger students learning about animals, science, and biographies.
  • TumbleBook Library: TumbleBook Library offers animated, talking picture books that highlight the text as it’s read aloud to support emerging readers.
  • Unite for Literacy: Unite for Literacy provides free digital picture books with audio narration in multiple languages to support diverse learners.
  • Storytime Online: Storytime Online features videos of actors reading children’s books aloud to make storytime engaging and fun.

Students can access these resources using their FCPS device! Simply log in, open a Chrome window, and do a Google search for Westlawn Elementary School or go to westlawnes.fcps.edu . Then scroll down below the homepage photo and click the button to go to Student Technology Links.

We also have another type of digital story in the Westlawn library: Playaways! Playaways are audiobooks that are loaded onto small plastic devices that look like old-school iPods. Students in 3rd grade - 6th grade can borrow one at a time. They can listen to the stories through the plastic devices using headphones. The devices can also plug into most car stereos using an auxiliary cable. Last year the Westlawn library got a whole new cache of Playaways thanks to a generous grant from Educate Fairfax.

Finally, don’t sleep on YouTube! YouTube features thousands of videos of teachers and authors doing read-alouds. If your child is insistent on hearing a certain book and you can’t find it on another platform, search on YouTube!

Is there a technology topic you want us to tackle in a future issue? Email your questions to Ms. Dushok (school based technology specialist) and Mr. Dinkins (technology support specialist).

The Feather Report

Volume 2, Issue 24

Kindergarten students celebrated the 101st Day of School on Wednesday by writing down the things they had learned since their journey at Westlawn began in August!

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

Wednesday marked our 101st day of school, and our kindergarteners were all smiles as they celebrated in the most joyful ways! From creative writing activities to hands-on counting fun, and of course their festive paper crowns, it was a day filled with learning, laughter, and a whole lot of pride. It’s amazing to think about how much growth has happened in just 101 days—our youngest learners continue to impress us with their curiosity and confidence!

With no school on Monday and Tuesday and a three-hour early release on Wednesday, this certainly felt like a quick week for our students and staff. Even in a shortened schedule, our classrooms were filled with meaningful learning and positive energy. We’re looking forward to returning to a normal routine next week and are hopeful for some cooperative weather to keep everyone safe and on time. Thank you for your flexibility and partnership as we navigate these winter adjustments together.

I also want to share warm wishes of Ramadan Mubarak to those in our community who are observing. We have appreciated the opportunity to host fasting students in the library during lunch, providing a quiet and welcoming space for them. Westlawn is such a special place because of the many cultures, traditions, and experiences our families bring, and I am grateful every day for the richness that creates.

Thank you for being such an important part of our Westlawn family. Here’s to a full week ahead and continued learning together!

In partnership,

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Mind Matters AAP Beyond Westlawn

At some point all of our students move out of Westlawn and our bubble of love. But what happens to the Advanced Academic Program in middle school and high school? AAP services as we know them here at Westlawn continue through 6th grade. It is a continuum of access where all students have opportunities to try rigorous AAP curriculum, some need more time in one or more subjects, and some students in grades 3-6 need full-time access to the AAP curriculum.

At Luther Jackson Middle School, students still access full-time AAP services if they’ve been found eligible with FCPS, but also they can self-select honors level courses which offer the same rigor as an AAP class. Many of our current sixth graders will be accessing those honors courses next year in one or more subjects regardless of their current AAP service. We definitely encourage students to try an honors level course in a subject of interest!

At Falls Church High School, students have full control of their classes and can choose honors , or Advanced Placement (AP) , or Dual Enrollment (DE) . They can also opt to go to another high school if they want to attend International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. And they can apply to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) if they need a highly rigorous STEM focused high school.

Advanced Academic Programs Overview:

K-12: Young Scholars Model

Elementary:

  • Access to Rigor (K-6)
  • Subject Specific AAP (K-6)
  • Part-Time AAP (3-6)
  • Full Time AAP (3-8)

Middle School:

  • Full-Time AAP (3-8)
  • Honors Courses (7-12)
  • IB Middle Years Program (some schools, 6-10)

High School:

  • Honor Courses
  • Advanced Placement (AP) (some schools)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) (some schools)
  • Dual Enrollment Courses (DE)
  • Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
Tech Talk

Did you read that viral article about AI that is going around? The author, Matt Shumer, has since come out and explained that it wasn’t meant to scare people . Instead, it was meant to encourage people to embrace AI tools in the workplace .

When I read it, my initial reaction to it was not as a professional--it was as a parent. If you read it, I’m willing to bet the same thing happened to you. Awful, right? Without more context, it’s terrifying to think that our children still have so many years of compulsory schooling to go, only to graduate and compete for an ever-scarcer number of jobs that AI is obliterating.

However, when I visit Westlawn classrooms and spaces each day, I see something that tells me that our children are going to be OK, regardless of the ways in which artificial intelligence changes the world. What do I see? Curiosity. It is absolutely everywhere at Westlawn--in classrooms, hallways, the playground, and even the cafeteria! Westlawn students are brimming with a desire to learn how to be better communicators, stronger readers, and more accurate mathematicians.

What else gives me hope? Gratitude and a spirit of sharing! These were both on full display last week when many classes celebrated Valentine’s Day on Friday, of course, and I also see students practicing them regularly. In a world where AI is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, the ability for people to connect with other people becomes even more important.

But, don’t take my word for it! Seeing is believing:

Kindergarten students checked out books from the library, and then browsed their new books, sharing the really cool parts with friends sitting nearby.

First grade students joyfully celebrated exchanging Valentine’s Day cards and treats with each other. No matter what was dropped into each bag--from a simple card to an elaborate toy--students grinned broadly and said “thank you!” to the giver.

Second grade students experimented to discover the fastest way to melt ice cubes using things like space heaters, cups of water, their own breath, and body heat. The joy of discovery was extraordinary!

Third grade students practiced sharing and hosting by distributing treats such as cupcakes at lunch. It is not uncommon for a third grade teacher to stay in the cafeteria with students for a few minutes, helping to manage class sets of cupcakes, pizza, or brownies.

Fourth grade students practiced holding conversations with structured pair sharing routines. Students learned how to listen to a partner before providing their own feedback.

Fifth grade students worked in teams to expand their vocabularies by taking one plain adjective, like “nice,” and brainstorming nine more specific adjectives that could be used to make a better description. If student teams couldn’t find nine new ones, they could poll the class. And if everyone was stumped, they could consult a thesaurus.

And, as every year, one special sixth grader was chosen to be Zero the Hero on 100th Day, helping spread the love of math (and stickers) to students in the primary grades!

Will it make a circuit? That was the question tackled by fifth graders as they worked together to use wires, a battery, a lightbulb, and a variety of other items to determine which items could conduct electricity and which ones could not.

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

What a joyful and busy week it has been at Westlawn! From celebrating our 100th Day of School on Friday to preparing for exciting moments ahead, there is so much to be proud of in our community.

Kindergarten registration for next year is officially underway, and we are already feeling the excitement for our newest little learners! Thank you to the families who have shared our registration website announcement with neighbors and friends—your outreach truly makes a difference. Word of mouth is powerful, and we are grateful for the way you help grow our Westlawn family. If you know a rising kindergartener, please encourage their family to register soon so we can begin planning for another wonderful year.

I also want to thank everyone for your flexibility during our recent snow days. Adjusting schedules is never easy, and your responsiveness—especially during Kiss and Ride arrival—has helped keep our mornings safe, calm, and organized. We are hoping the warmer days ahead will melt the “snowcrete” and help us get back to normal operations very soon! Your patience and teamwork truly make a difference. And speaking of showing our school pride, spirit wear is now available in a variety of sizes and styles to fit every budget . It is always a joy to see our Eagles representing Westlawn with pride!

As we head into the week, I want to wish all of our families a very Happy Valentine’s Day and a Happy Lunar New Year to those who celebrate. May this season bring joy, connection, and new beginnings for all. Thank you for being such an incredible part of our Westlawn community—we are stronger together!

Newsletter Survey Feedback

Thank you to everybody who responded to our newsletter survey! We have already put a few suggestions into place, such as moving the time of the Monday morning newsletter podcast reminder until later in the day, and adding a list of frequently-contacted people and offices to the bottom of the newsletter. We also had a few questions and suggestions we wanted to address.

Why is the Photo of the Week so big?

We use software called GovDelivery to create and send the newsletters. GovDelivery uses modules to organize information--text only, image only, or image with text. The modules “stack” in a vertical column to create the newsletter. We use the image only module for the Photo of the Week, so the module makes it as wide as the newsletter. If you open the newsletter on a laptop or desktop computer, it will make the photo look huge because it scales to fit the screen.

Can we know more dates in advance?

Sure! When there is an event that requires registration, we will try to tell you in advance as much as we can. We will also give you additional advance notice for big school events that you will want to plan around, such as SOL dates and the date for our 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony. We are actively working with our partners at Luther Jackson MS and Falls Church HS to get their relevant events onto our Tandem calendar, too!

Can we hear more about what teachers are doing in classrooms?

This is such a good idea! It is being added to the folder of ideas for Volume 3. This year we are focused on our Soaring Staff Spotlights, but we are always looking for more awesome ideas!

What’s up with the info that comes from FCPS News?

Each week the Office of Communications sends us information and invites us to put it into our own newsletter. We try to select the information that might impact families the most to reprint in The Feather Report , and we keep the link for FCPS News at the bottom of our News section in case families want more information than we reprinted. We know that many families receive the extra news from FCPS directly, but we would rather you get the information twice than not at all.

Is there a newsletter for anything--education or otherwise--that you really like? Forward one of them to Ms. Dushok and tell her what you like about it. She’s always looking for new ideas!

Reminder: Ramadan and Fasting Students

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends. Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at [email protected] or 703-813-4800.

At Westlawn we recognize that students who are fasting may not feel comfortable sitting in the cafeteria at lunch. Like in years past, students who are fasting are welcome to spend their lunch period in the library. While in the library students may read books, work on their laptops, or use quiet library centers, such as board games. Students are also welcome to bring a friend so they are not sitting alone.

Reminder: Families of Rising 7th Graders: Connect to Luther Jackson MS

It’s hard to believe that our sixth graders are officially in the last half of their final year at Westlawn! If your child is transitioning to Luther Jackson MS next year, it’s time to start connecting to Luther Jackson publications so you know what’s happening.

Mind Matters Big Vocabulary Fun!

Do you ever get excited about a REALLLLY long word?? No? Just us? You’d be surprised how fun it can be to pronounce and chunk the roots of a really big word.

And what better word to try it out on than: friggatriskaidekaphobia

What in the world!?

Help your students break it into parts: Frigga-triskai-deka-phobia, that should help with pronunciation.

  • Ask: Frigga, sounds like what day of the week? Friday! In fact Frigg is the Norse goddess of Friday!
  • Ask: Does the root “tri” sound familiar? Three! And triskaideka is Greek for 13.
  • Ask: Have you ever heard the word “phobia?” Many have heard it means the fear of something.

Put that all together and it’s the fear of Friday the 13th! There’s a lot of myth about the number 13 and the day Friday both being unlucky. Put them together and you get a fear that apparently 17 million people suffer from. That’s a lot! Mrs. Maxwell is here to tell you that her daughter was born on a Friday the 13th (WITH a full moon!) and she’s pretty awesome so we’ve debunked this fear.

What other big words can you try this with? Send Mrs. Maxwell ones you’ve enjoyed!

Tech Talk

Tech Talk will return with a new column next week! This week we are re-running the November 14, 2025 column about FCPS resources. This extra-long weekend is a great chance for your child to spend a little bit of time practicing their skills using these three online platforms.

FCPS Digital Resources

What can students do with their laptops at home each night? One option is to explore the various FCPS Digital Resources. The FCPS website offers a handy guide of digital resources by grade level , and includes links to access the resource and a brief description of what the resource offers.

Here at Westlawn there are three main resources we use with students:

  1. Lexia: Lexia is a resource designed to help students learn to read by supporting their development with phonics, spelling, and other discrete reading skills. Like video games, Lexia has levels, and students are generally very excited to pass a level and move on to the next one. Lexia also offers a robust database of information for teachers, including resources that can be used with students to practice specific reading skills.
  2. ST Math: ST Math is a puzzle-based game designed to help students practice math concepts. ST Math is unique in that it features almost no text, so it is intentionally designed to be accessible regardless of a student’s ability to read directions. That said, it is also a different way to learn math than many of us may have experienced when we were children! If your child gets stuck on a puzzle and you can’t figure it out either, just reach out to your child’s teacher for support.
  3. Summit K12: Summit K12 is new for us this year, and is a program designed to help students learn English. Only students learning English have access to Summit K12. We are curious to see how Summit K12 will help our multi-lingual learners this year! Families with questions about Summit K12 are encouraged to reach out to their child’s teacher.

Is there a technology topic you want us to tackle in a future issue? Email your questions to Ms. Dushok (school based technology specialist) and Mr. Dinkins (technology support specialist).

The Feather Report

Volume 2, Issue 22

Visiting the library is the best part of the day for many students at Westlawn! Students learn so much about themselves as readers and as people by searching for and selecting “just right” books that meet their interests.

Leadership Ledger

Westlawn Families,

What a week it has been as we found our rhythm again after what many are calling the worst snowstorm in 30 years! Returning to school after days of snow and icy conditions reminded me just how special this community is—flexible, patient, and always ready to support one another as we get back into the swing of things.

I want to begin with a huge thank you to our incredible custodial staff. Long before students and staff returned, they were here early and late, clearing snow, salting walkways, and making sure our building was safe, warm, and welcoming. Their behind-the-scenes work often goes unnoticed, but it is absolutely essential to everything we do. We are so grateful for their dedication and care for our school!

This week also brought moments of celebration and reflection. Congratulations to Alanna Dushok, who was recognized with Best in Show at the FCPS Communications Conference! This is a tremendous honor, and one that reflects the outstanding work she does telling the Westlawn story through our website, newsletter, and social media. We are so proud of her and thankful for the way she keeps our families informed and connected. Read more about this award and why Westlawn was recognized ! In addition, we gathered to dedicate a memorial bookshelf for Judy LeClair, a former Westlawn employee remembered for her dedication, kindness, and love of crafts. The bookshelf will serve as a lasting tribute and a quiet reminder of the impact she had on our community.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership, your patience, and your continued support. Even after a stormy start, it feels good to be back together—and there is so much to look forward to as we move ahead as one Westlawn community!

In partnership,

Christoph Hill, Stephanie Carpenter, and Erin Theiss

Check In with Your Child about Food at Lunch

We have noticed that more students are taking food from the sharing refrigerator and sharing basket in our cafeteria over the past few weeks. This happens every year, and the reason behind the shift is that the students are growing! It can be so easy for us to think about school years like static chunks of time, but that isn’t accurate. The students grow and change each day!

Please take a few minutes this weekend to chat with your child about lunch at school. If you send food from home, do they need to be sent with more? Would you like them to get lunch each day as a supplement? And if they usually get school lunch, encourage them to take more fruits and veggies! Students serve themselves fruits and veggies as they go through the line, and they might not realize they can take more!

Finally, if your family needs support to get more food on the table at home, we can help! Contact Ms. Reyes (family liaison) or Ms. Cortez (social worker) to be added to our food distribution lists. Their contact information is located at the very bottom of the newsletter.

Ramadan and Fasting Students

From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:

  • Cost:Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
  • Pickup:Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
  • Menu:Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.

Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at [email protected] or 703-813-4800.

This week the Soaring Staff Spotlight is on Sarah Jacoby!

Ms. Jacobyis a school counselor at Westlawn. Let’s learn more about Ms. Jacoby!

What is your favorite children’s book?

I love the book Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson. She is a beautiful writer.

What is one talent or skill that you have that most people don’t know about?

I played volleyball and basketball when I was growing up.

If you weren’t in education, what other job would you want?

I would love to try being a baker or pastry chef.  I love sweet things, especially cinnamon rolls, so that would be the dream!

What is your favorite memory from elementary school?

I loved celebrating Valentine's Day in elementary school.  We made boxes for our Valentines and had so much fun passing them out and eating lots of candy.

If you could instantly learn a new skill, what would it be?

I would like to learn another language, like Spanish or French.  Learning a language with a different alphabet, like Greek, would be very interesting too.

Early bird or night owl?

I am definitely an early bird.  I wake up before school to go to the gym and love taking time for a full breakfast in the morning.
