Introduction to Graduate Studies: Finding Dissertations/Theses

Welcome to Graduate School! This guide will help you get started as you begin your master's degree.

Dissertations & Theses: Empirical Research, Citations, and Theories

Most dissertations will include a theoretical foundation or model, and will trace the history of it. They can also be a great way to find citations because of the literature review sections.

Tips for Searching in ProQuest Dissertations & Theses

  • Search using keywords, not whole phrases.
  • Narrow down the date using the 'Publication Date' limit.

The date limit is labeled publication date

  • Limit to either just theses or just dissertations under ' Manuscript Type'.

  • Looking for a specific theory? Make sure to search full text and put the full name of the theory in quotes, i.e. "Social learning theory".

Dissertation Databases & Collections

The ProQuest Dissertations & Theses database includes most dissertations from North American universities but its coverage of other regions is limited.  Many dissertations from around the world are available for free online.  You can look for these using the search engines below.

Citing Dissertations & Theses

The Dissertations & Theses database is from ProQuest, which has a citation tool:

the citation tool is part of the tools menu

Choose the style you need from the menu

ProQuest includes the permalink in the citation tool.

Remember to double check the format, as the computer generated citations can sometimes make mistakes in capitalization and punctuation. While ProQuest will include the permalink, it is not a part of the correct citation.

You will find all of the information needed on the title page. For dissertations NOT from Proquest you will need:

  • Author
  • Title
  • Date
  • University
  • URL/Address
  • Items retrieved from ProQuest Dissertations and Theses should state so in the reference
  • Dissertations posted online should mention the granting University

Format:

Author, A. A. (Year). Title of work (Publication No. XYZ) [Type, University]. Database Name.
