Copilot tells me why this no longer works

I asked
in google chrome, the most valuable tool i had was an extension called context menu search. It stopped working, and when I looked at the potions for this extensionm, it was obvious there had been some significant changes although the concept, and menu configuration seemed to remain the same, but the damm thing, whike it works the instant it is added to chrome, does not work again after chrome is reloaded. Do you know anything about this extension and why it has become problematic
Short answer: The Context Menu Search extension for Chrome has indeed become problematic for many users. The issue is tied to changes in Chrome’s extension system (Manifest V3 updates) and how context menus are registered. It often works immediately after installation but fails after a browser restart because the extension doesn’t properly re‑initialize its context menu items under the new rules.

🔎 What’s going on with Context Menu Search?
Manifest V3 migration: Chrome has been phasing out Manifest V2 extensions. Context Menu Search was originally built on V2, and the transition to V3 requires different handling of background scripts and permissions. If the developer hasn’t fully updated the code, menus may not persist after reload.

Context menu registration: Extensions must re‑register context menu items each time Chrome starts. Some versions of Context Menu Search fail to do this, so the menu disappears until you reinstall or re‑enable the extension.

Permissions changes: Updates to Chrome’s security model mean extensions need explicit permissions for context menus and scripting. If these aren’t set correctly, the extension may appear broken even though the configuration looks fine.

General Chrome extension instability: Extensions can stop working due to corrupted profiles, conflicts with other extensions, or outdated Chrome builds.

So is this valuable extension going to be fixed,. or are its followers going to have to look for an alternative

passing the text selected to Perplexity

I have added your extension! I see there's a option to add %s .....is this supposed to pass my selected text to Perplexity?
when i added %s, (eg. https://www.perplexity.ai/%s) and selected text and choose the Perplexity option, Perplexity opened to this url:
https://www.perplexity.ai/ment%20for%20J, with "404 Page Not Found" displayed

Context Menu Search no longer functions

The Chrome extension stopped working today. I have the latest updates for chrome, Context Search menu, and Windows 11. My search menu is still present and I can select a search option such as Google, but no page opens in chrome. Any advice?

Bug in ContextMenuSearch

In Chrome browser (x64, always latest updated version), after using ContextMenuSearch for a while (sometimes more than a week or two, sometimes just a couple of days), it spontaneously disappears from the context menu.
This was also the case in former versions and it happens in v3.0.1, too. I do not remember when this bug appeared for the first time, but it was not there in very early versions.

I found no solution to make the context menu option reappear; neither restart nor disabling and reenabling the extension has any effect. The only "workaround" seems to be to uninstall and reinstall ContextMenuSearch (and reloading previously saved options) — than it works again (for a while).

Display URL Tooltip Suggestion

I suggest adding an option to display the URL tooltip when hovering over search engines in the context menu. I am not sure if this is possible, but it would be very helpful for me as I have many search engines with confusing labels and need to know which one to choose. Thank you

It doesn't work when using a URL as a search term.

I have some searches setup where the URL changes but the end of the URL stays the same.
I have a test one setup using "TESTSEARCHsearch?q=stuff"
If I highlight "https://www.google.com/" and tun the test search, I get the following.
"chrome-extension://ocpcmghnefmdhljkoiapafejjohldoga/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fsearch?q=stuff"
This has worked in the past.

Does not show up in right-click menu

Totally broken in version 3.0. The menu does not show up at all. I have a 2.99 version that has thankfully not updated in ungoogled chrome. And it works perfectly.
