You can use Gmail to check your spelling and grammar automatically as you write.

Important:

  • Suggestions are based on your text, and don't represent Google's views.
  • Spelling and grammar checks in Gmail may not be available in all languages.

As you type, Gmail automatically checks your text for mistakes and underlines words or phrases that need corrections.

  1. To view the suggestion, click the underlined word or phrase in your draft.
  2. To accept the suggestion, click it.
    • Or, to dismiss it, click Ignore.

Tips:

  • For common misspelled words, Gmail automatically corrects them.
  • To undo a change:
    • On Windows:Press Ctrl+ Z.
    • On Mac:Press Cmd+ Z.
    • On screen readers:
      1. To find underlined words, use your arrow keys.
      2. Tap Taband then Enter.

Change settings for grammar, spelling & autocorrect

  1. On your computer, go to gmail.com .
  2. At the top right, click Settingsand then See all settings.
  3. At the top, click General.
  4. Update your settings for grammar, spelling, and autocorrect:
    • Turn Grammar suggestionson or off.
    • Turn Spelling suggestionson or off.
    • Turn Autocorrecton or off.

Proofread your email with Gemini in Gmail

Important

  • This feature is only available in the US and in English.
  • To proofread your email with Gemini in Gmail, you need an eligible Google AI plan:

When you draft an email, Gemini in Gmail can suggest improvements beyond spelling and grammar corrections, like:

  • Conciseness
  • Active voice
  • Sentence structure
  • Word choice
  1. In your draft, click an underlined word or phrase to open the suggestion card.
  2. In the suggestion card, choose an action:
    • To use a suggestion, click it.
    • To ignore the suggestion, click Ignore.
    • To give feedback about the suggestion, click Report an issue.

Tip:When you ignore a suggestion, it does not reappear for the same word or phrase unless you modify the text.

Turn off proofread suggestions

Important: If you turn off smart features, it also turns off other AI-powered Workspace features, like the Gemini in Gmail side panel. Learn more about smart features and controls .

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Settingsand then See all settings.
  3. At the top, click General.
  4. Update your settings for proofread suggestions:
    • Next to “Smart features,” deselect Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
    • Next to “Google Workspace smart features”:
      1. Click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
      2. Turn Smart features in Google Workspaceoff.
      3. Click Save.
