William Hendrie, a Scottish railwayman, came to Hamilton in 1855 and purchased this valley land as a horse farm. The Hendrie family were founders of the Ontario Jockey Club and made their wealth in railway development. In 1931, a 122-acre (49 ha) parcel of the Hendrie Valley Farm was given to the City of Hamilton by George M. Hendrie. He donated the property to the Hamilton Parks Board in memory of his father William and his brothers. Ten years later the property transferred to RBG for ecological protection.
