You can control when and how you get notifications for texts and messages from apps. You can also create bubbles for a conversation, which makes it easier to find and respond to messages.
Important:
- Some of these steps work only on Android 11 and up. Learn how to check your Android version .
- To improve battery performance on Pixel 6 and later, check battery diagnostics:
- Open your phone's Settings app.
- Tap Battery Battery diagnostics.
Change notifications for conversations
Important:Not all messaging apps offer these notification settings.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Under “Conversations,” touch and hold the notification that you want to change.
- Choose a notification setting:
- Important:You’ll always get notifications for this conversation, even when Do Not Disturb is on. You’ll also find a bubble for the conversation.
- Default:Your phone makes a sound or vibrates when you get new messages in this conversation.
- Silent: You won’t get notifications for this conversation.
Find conversations with bubbles quickly
Add or remove a bubble for a conversation
To create a bubble for a conversation:
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Under “Conversations,” touch and hold the chat notification.
- Tap Bubble conversation.
To stop a bubble for a conversation:
- To open the conversation, tap the bubble.
- At the bottom left, tap Manage.
- Tap Don’t bubble conversation.
Tip:To hide a bubble temporarily, choose Dismiss bubble.The bubble reappears when you get a new message.
Turn Bubbles on or off
- When you notice a bubble, tap it to open it.
- At the bottom left, tap Manage Bubbles settings.
- Turn off Allow apps to show bubbles.
Turn Bubbles on or off for a specific app or conversation
- When you notice a bubble, tap it to open it.
- At the bottom left, tap Manage Bubbles settings.
- Tap the app you want to change.
- Choose your notification settings:
- All conversations can bubble.
- Selected conversations can bubble:Tap a person, then turn on Bubble.
- Nothing can bubble.
