Minimum requirements

These are the requirements for your item group title to be used by Google. If you don't follow these requirements, we may not use your product group title.

Note: If your item group title doesn't fit within the maximum character limit, Google will truncate it to fit. You'll receive a warning indicating that the title has been truncated.

    • Common title for all variants of a product: Use the same value for the item group title [item_group_title] attribute for all products with the same item group ID [item_group_id] . All variants of the same product must have the same item group title [item_group_title] .
    • Use a relevant title that clearly describes your product group.Make sure the item group title [item_group_title] is different from the title [title] attributes you use for the individual variants in the product group.

    • Submit the same variant-identifying attributes for each variant in a product group: Submit the variant option [variant_option] attribute along with the item group ID [item_group_id] and item group title [item_group_title] attributes. Make sure all variants use the same set of name [name] sub-attributes of the variant option [variant_option] attribute. Also specify the color [color] , pattern [pattern] , material [material] , age group [age_group] , gender [gender] and size [size] attributes in addition to variant option [variant_option] when these are part of the set of variant-identifying properties.

    • Use professional and grammatically correct language. Correct grammar is easier to understand and gives you a more professional appearance, which can lead to more clicks. Also avoid gimmicky ways of drawing attention such as all caps, symbols, and HTML tags. Learn more about the editorial and professional requirements
    • Don’t use words from foreign languages unless they’re well understood, such as a product with a foreign name or title.
      • Don’t use foreign characters for gimmicky purposes. This technique is common in spam and untrustworthy ads. For example: (ಠ_ಠ).
      • The majority of your product data must match the data source language.
    • Don’t use capital letters for emphasis. Capitalized text is common in spam and untrustworthy ads. You should still use capitalization when it’s appropriate, including for abbreviations, phone numbers, countries, and currency. For example, "ADHD", "UNICEF", "1-555-CALL-NOW", "UK", and "USD".
    • Don’t include promotional text. Don’t add information such as price, sale price, sale dates, shipping, delivery date, other time-related information, or your company’s name. Include this information with the other attributes such as sale price or shipping.
    • Don’t use extra white spaces. Instead, use those characters in a more effective way to describe your product.

    Best practices

These best practices can help you go beyond the basic requirements to optimize your product data for performance.

    • Keep your item group title shorter and more generic than the titles of variant products.Variant product titles are recommended to include the variant-identifying properties, while the item group title shouldn't include those.
    • Put the most important details first. Users will usually see only the first 70 or fewer characters of your title, depending on screen size.
    • Use keywords. Keywords will help connect your product with a person's search and help them recognize what you’re selling. Your keywords could include these types of product details:
      • Product name
      • Brand
      • Specific details about the product area such as “maternity” for apparel or “waterproof” for mascara
    • Only use details that apply to the product group. Don't include details that only apply to individual variants, for example, size and color.
    • Add the product’s brand name if it’s a differentiating factor. If you sell products from many different brands and the product's brand is a differentiating characteristic of the product, add the brand name to the item group title so that users can understand who makes the product you're selling.
