Understand sound exposure notifications

Important:This feature is available on Android 15 and later.

If you listen to audio at a high volume on headphones and the sound levels exceed safe volumes, sound exposure alerts you. It may lower the volume to a safe level after continued use.

If the sound goes over 100 dB SPL per 5 minutes and 105 dB SPL per minute, a notification warning about the potential risk of dangerous environment exposure appears. You’ll also get an alert if your volume gets turned down. 1

  • To continue to listen with your headphones at a high volume, tap Keep listening.
  • To lower the volume of the sound, tap Lower volume.

Tips:

  • Your Pixel phone automatically enables sound exposure notifications. They can’t be turned off.
  • If you don’t acknowledge or dismiss the notification, it automatically lowers the volume.
  • If the sound suddenly increases, your phone automatically lowers the volume to a safe level.

1 Sound exposure notifications enhance Pixel's audio framework and audio HAL to measure continuous sound dose exposure, aligning with the EN 50332-3 standard for headphone listening. Learn more about Sound dose .
