Understand your new Search services settings
Important:We’re updating how your settings in Google Search services are managed.
To ensure your privacy settings are accurate on your device, update to the latest app version through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store . You can also manage these settings directly at account.google.com .
In the past, saving history and personalized recommendations were managed by Web & App Activity and Search Personalization settings. Going forward, you’ll be able to manage history and personalized recommendations independently through 2 new settings:
- Search Services History
- Personalized Recommendations
Search Services History may now include media (like images and audio) from your interactions, depending on your settings.
These new settings are based on your most recent choices for Web & App Activity and Search Personalization settings. If these were on, these new settings are also on. If your prior settings were off, the new settings are also off. If Web & App Activity was on but Search Personalization was off, only Search Services History has been turned on. As before, you can choose how long your history is saved and whether you want to delete it manually or automatically. You can also manage your Save Media subsetting any time. Web & App Activity continues to control activity collection and personalization for some other Google services.
Tip:If you got your Google Account through your educational institution, your choices may vary.

Understand how Search Services History works
When you’re signed in, Search Services History lets you manage whether Google saves your interactions on Search services as history to your Google Account. Your Search Services History includes things like your searches, info from sites you visit with Search services, and generative AI responses. It can also include related info, like general location and your media from your interactions. This media includes your images, files, and audio/video recordings, such as Google Lens images, content you upload, and recordings from Search Live, Translate speaking practice, and voice searches.
Your saved history helps tailor your experience on Search services and across Google. For example, it helps you revisit previous searches and get personalized recommendations and ads, based on your personalization settings .
As described in the Google Privacy Policy, Google also uses your history to provide, develop, and improve its services (such as training generative AI models) and to protect Google, its users, and the public with the help of human reviewers.
We take your privacy seriously and take steps to protect it when using your Search Services History data to train our AI models. For example, data is disconnected from your Google Account before it is used to train our AI models or reviewed by our trained service providers. We will seek your permission before sharing your media with these providers for human review as part of the model improvement process. We use filters designed to automatically remove a broad range of identifying info or sensitive personal information. We are constantly working to improve our filtering and safety systems to better protect your privacy. When Search Services History is off, your future activity won't be used to train Google’s generative AI models, unless you provide feedback.
Tip:If you got your Google Account through your educational institution, Google does not use your Search Services History data to train generative AI models.
