Stirring Images of a Drowning World
South African photographer Gideon Mendel spent nearly ten years traveling to flood-stricken parts of the world — Haiti, Pakistan, Nigeria, Thailand, Brazil — to make these remarkable portraits of submerged inhabitants.
The aim of the series, Drowning World, is to raise awareness of climate change and its effect on every part of the world, particularly developing countries, and to “bear witness to a shared human experience,” he says.
The project is off to a great start, having already won the Pollock Prize for Creativity.
