Penis pain can be due to aurinary tract infection (UTI), urethritis (inflammation/irritation of the urethra) is usually the most likely possibility in the setting you mention.
In most cases, bacteria first begin growing in the urinary tract. An infection limited to the urinary tract is called urethritis.
Urethritis is frequently associated with a discharge, the color and consistency of which would depend on the cause of the urethritis.
Urethritis may be caused by bacteria or a virus. The same bacteria that cause urinary tract infections (E. coli) and some STD sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea) can lead to urethritis. Viral VD causes of urethritis include herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus.
Risks for urethritis include: * High-risk sexual behavior (such as anal sex without a condom) * History of sexually transmitted diseases * Male, ages 18 - 35 * Many sexual partners
No Office VistsIf the penis urethra tract infection is not treated promptly, bacteria may then go up the ureters to infect the kidneys (pyelonephritis).
People with urethritis symptoms who had treatment should avoid sex or use condoms during sex. If an infection is the cause of the inflammation, your sexual partner must also be treated.
Some causes of urethritis may be avoided with good personal hygiene and by practicing safer sexual behaviors.
