San Francisco 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall had a frightening experience on Saturday when he was shot during an attempted robbery.
The 23-year-old wide receiver is now recovering in serious but stable condition after being shot in the chest.
The San Francisco 49ers quickly released a statement on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to address the incident .
“Ricky Pearsall was the victim of an attempted robbery and shooting this afternoon,” the statement read. “He sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition. We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.”
Ricky’s mother, Erin Pearsall, also gave fans a personal update on Facebook later that night .
She explained that her son had been shot in the chest, but the bullet exited out of his back without hitting any vital organs.
“Thanks be to GOD it missed his vital organs,” she wrote. Erin shared that Ricky was in good spirits and expressed her gratitude, believing her son had been “spared by the grace of GOD.”
Just before the shooting, Ricky Pearsall was on his way to an event center located at Geary and Market Streets in San Francisco.
He planned to meet fans and sign autographs, a common activity for athletes to connect with their supporters.
However, things took a sudden and dangerous turn when a suspect approached Ricky, attempting to rob him of his Rolex watch.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, a struggle broke out between Ricky and the suspect over the gun.
During this tussle, the NFL rookie was shot in the chest. The suspect was also shot, but it’s not clear exactly where he was injured.
Following the incident, both Ricky and the suspect were rushed to San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center for medical treatment.
The suspect, identified as a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, was arrested shortly after the incident.
San Francisco Police Chief William Scott spoke about the situation, stating that there was no evidence to suggest that Ricky was targeted because of his career as a professional football player.
The police believe the suspect acted alone, but they plan to review surveillance footage from nearby cameras to ensure they have all the facts.
Despite the shocking nature of the event, there was a bit of good news.
Ricky’s mom shared that he was incredibly fortunate – the bullet went through his chest and exited out his back but didn’t hit any major organs.
“ He is in good spirits right now,” she mentioned, expressing relief over her son’s condition.
By Sunday, Ricky had been released from the hospital, as reported by ESPN . He is now at home, resting and recovering from his injuries.
The San Francisco Police Department reported that officers arrived at the scene of a shooting around 3:37 p.m. on Saturday near Geary Street and Grant Avenue.
It is a popular area in the Union Square district known for its boutique shops, upscale hotels, and fine dining.
Upon their arrival, police found two men with injuries and immediately provided assistance before paramedics took both to a local hospital for further treatment.
The suspect, who tried to rob Ricky Pearsall of his Rolex watch, was arrested, and charges are currently being prepared.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins mentioned that a decision on the charges is expected by the middle of next week.
Since the suspect is a minor, the case will first be handled in juvenile court.
It’s unclear what specific charges the teenager might face, but the process is already underway to determine the legal steps forward.
Ricky Pearsall, born in Phoenix, Arizona, grew up in Chandler and attended Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, where he became a standout football player.
