In the world of country music, rumors often swirl around the inspiration behind hit songs.
Megan Moroney ‘s viral track “Tennessee Orange” sparked speculation about a possible romance with fellow artist Morgan Wallen .
Were they more than just friends? Moroney recently spilled the details on the Call Her Daddy podcast, finally addressing the rumors.
Curious about the truth? Keep reading to uncover the story behind the song and their relationship.
Back in late 2022, Megan Moroney burst onto the music scene with her viral hit “Tennessee Orange,” capturing the hearts of country music fans everywhere.
But as the song climbed the charts, a question started to circulate among her growing fanbase: Was the song a love letter to Morgan Wallen?
This question wasn’t without merit. The lyrics of “Tennessee Orange” paint a vivid picture of a man who is a die-hard supporter of the Tennessee Volunteers, a well-documented trait of Morgan Wallen.
Not only is Wallen a major Vols fan, but he also has the blue eyes described in the song.
Adding to the intrigue were several flirty social media interactions between Moroney and Wallen around the time the song was released.
Fans pieced together these clues and began to speculate that there was more than just a professional connection between the two country stars .
For months, fans eagerly awaited confirmation or denial of the rumors.
Moroney remained tight-lipped about the true inspiration behind “Tennessee Orange,” neither confirming nor denying the swirling speculation.
That all changed on a Wednesday (July 31) episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast.
During the episode, host Alex Cooper directly asked Moroney if she and Wallen had ever been romantically involved. Moroney’s response was both candid and humorous.
“Never exclusively,” she replied, breaking into laughter. “I’ve tried to avoid that in every single interview I’ve ever done. But we’re here now, and time has passed, so all is well.”
While it became clear that Moroney and Wallen never had a serious, exclusive relationship, Moroney did reveal that they had indeed dated.
She provided a detailed timeline of their relationship, dating back to early 2020.
“Okay, here’s what I’ll tell you, because I haven’t told anyone this ever,” Moroney began. “Him and I met in 2020—Jon Langston actually introduced us. I was a senior in college. COVID hadn’t happened yet. His Dangerous album wasn’t even out yet.”
She continued, “So we were friends for a long time. It’s 2024 now, and that was 2020. We were friends for a long time. We were not just friends. And now we’re friends.”
Moroney elaborated on how they managed to keep their relationship under wraps , emphasizing that it wasn’t particularly challenging.
“Like I said, we weren’t exclusively dating ever,” she pointed out.
“And I think both of our schedules made it easier to keep things private. When we tried to hang out, it was like, ‘Okay, we have this one day of the whole month where we’re both maybe in town, and then someone has something going on.’ But him and I are friends.”
Their busy schedules and the nature of their relationship made it easy for them to maintain a level of privacy that is often difficult for celebrities to achieve.
As for whether “Tennessee Orange” is truly about Wallen, Moroney remains resolute in her decision to keep that a secret.
“I will not say what my songs are about ever,” she firmly told Cooper.
She also mentioned that she has “no idea” if any of Wallen’s songs are about her, maintaining an air of mystery around their musical inspirations.
Despite the rumors and speculation, both Moroney and Wallen have continued to focus on their careers.
Moroney’s sophomore album, Am I Ok? , debuted inside the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart earlier this month, showcasing her growing popularity and success in the country music scene.
Wallen, meanwhile, has also been enjoying a successful career, with his music topping charts and resonating with fans around the world.
While the details of their past relationship have finally come to light, it appears that both Moroney and Wallen are content with their current friendship and are focused on their respective careers.
The mystery behind “Tennessee Orange” remains unsolved, and it seems Moroney intends to keep it that way.
