Some of today’s biggest country stars didn’t begin their careers in the usual way. From American Idol to The Voice , these shows have helped launch careers that now dominate the charts.
We’re going to take a look at some of the award-winning country artists who found their start on television and went on to make a huge mark on country music.
Scotty McCreery made history as the youngest male to win American Idol and immediately made a name for himself with his deep voice and classic country sound.
His debut album, Clear As Day , went platinum and featured the hit “I Love You This Big.” His song “Five More Minutes” also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
Lauren Alaina came close to winning American Idol in 2011, finishing as the runner-up to Scotty McCreery. Despite not winning the top prize, Alaina’s impressive vocal range and endearing personality earned her a devoted fan following.
Her debut album, Wildflower , really showed off her talent. She has since scored several No. 1 hits and even won an ACM Award for New Female Vocalist of the Year.
Carrie Underwood first captured the nation’s heart when she won Season 4 of American Idol in 2005. After winning, she released her debut album, Some Hearts , quickly becoming a massive hit.
Underwood is now one of country music’s biggest stars, with eight Grammy Awards and countless other honors under her belt.
Miranda Lambert may not have won her season of Nashville Star in 2003, but that didn’t stop her from becoming one of the most successful artists in country music. Her first album, Kerosene , was a hit with “What About Georgia?” showing off her bold style.
With loads of Grammy Awards and over 35 Academy of Country Music Awards, Miranda’s rebellious vibe and unique sound have made her a real standout in the industry.
Chris Young is another success story from the reality show Nashville Star , where he won in 2006 with his classic country style and smooth baritone voice.
His debut single, “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” marked the beginning of a successful career, leading to multiple No. 1 hits like “Tomorrow” and “I’m Comin’ Over.” Nominated for several Grammy Awards, Chris Young is a prominent star that emerged from reality TV.
Kellie Pickler, the country singer, didn’t win American Idol, but she sure won over fans with her infectious personality and country charm.
After appearing on American Idol , she released her debut album, “Small Town Girl,” which featured hits like “Red High Heels.” Since then, her career has continued to flourish, with multiple albums, awards, and even a victory on Dancing with the Stars.
Before winning Season 3 of The Voice, Cassadee Pope rocked out as the lead singer of the pop-punk band Hey Monday. After switching to country music, she found even more success
Her debut country album, Frame by Frame , featured the hit single “ Wasting All These Tears .” Pope has since won a CMT Music Award and made history as the first female The Voice winner with a No. 1 album on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
Morgan Wallen appeared on Season 6 of The Voice in 2014, where Usher coached him and later by Adam Levine. Though he didn’t win, Wallen used the exposure to launch his country music career.
His debut album, If I Know Me , produced big hits like “Whiskey Glasses.” Despite a few controversies, Wallen’s talent and success made him one of the biggest names in country music, with multiple No. 1 hits and a Billboard Music Award.
Trent Harmon won American Idol Season 15 in 2016. His soulful voice and undeniable talent helped him win, and he quickly signed a record deal to start his country music career.
After that, he released his debut single, “There’s a Girl,” and has steadily made a name for himself in the country music scene. Though his rise has been more low-key than some of his predecessors, his dedication to his passion is clear, and he’s definitely a rising star in country music.
Gabby Barrett, who finished third in Season 16 of American Idol, has become a rising star in the music industry. Her hit single “I Hope” topped the Billboard Country Airplay chart and even crossed the pop world.
With her debut album, Goldmine , she’s winning awards and making a big impact in country music.
RaeLynn competed on Season 2 of The Voice in 2012, where Blake Shelton coached her. Although she didn’t take home the crown, her fun personality and hits like “God Made Girls” helped her build a strong career in country music.
Since then, she’s been slaying with chart-topping singles and earning award nominations, all while keeping her music real and her performances electric.
Though Danielle Peck didn’t win Nashville Star in 2004, she used the exposure to launch her country music career. Her debut single, “ I Don’t ,” was a hit, and her self-titled debut album showcased her talent as a vocalist and songwriter.
Over the years, Peck has continued to release music and perform, building a loyal fanbase in the country world. While she may not have won the top prize on TV, she’s certainly made her mark in the industry.
Meghan Linsey first found success as part of the country duo Steel Magnolia, and then wowed audiences on Season 8 of The Voice in 2015, finishing as the runner-up.
Linsey has since pursued a solo career, releasing music that blends country, soul, and pop influences. Her unique sound and memorable performances have earned her a devoted following.
Josh Gracin, a former Marine, finished in fourth place on Season 2 of American Idol in 2003. After the show, he signed a record deal and released his first album, featuring the hit single “Nothin’ to Lose,” which topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Gracin’s success continued with several more hits and albums, and he remains a respected figure in the country music world. His military background and smooth voice have made him a fan favorite.
Danielle Bradbery made history by winning Season 4 of The Voice at just 16 years old. Her debut album includes popular singles like “The Heart of Dixie,” and she’s been rocking the country music scene ever since.
Bradbery has since established herself in the country music scene, releasing multiple albums and earning awards, including a CMT Music Award.
