While Zeke played with many artists throughout his life, including George Jones, it was his nearly decade-long tenure with Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miner Band that solidified his place in country music history.
From 1974 to 1983, Zeke’s lively fiddle brought a unique energy to Loretta’s performances, creating memories for fans that still resonate today.
Before captivating audiences with his music, Zeke served his country in the United States Army.

“Every member of Loretta’s Coal Miner band was like family to her. Zeke Dawson was with her for nearly a decade. He will be missed by the entire Lynn family. This week, we are sending our love to his family.”
David Thornhill, Loretta’s former lead guitarist and bandleader, also shared his thoughts:
“Sorry to say, but we lost another ‘Coalminer’ this morning. Zeke Dawson, who was Loretta’s fiddle player from 1974 for 9 years, passed away this morning at 1:00 AM. Zeke was my roommate on the road, and quite a unique person. He was always in a happy mood and kept things lively on the road. He will greatly be missed. RIP, my great friend.”
These heartfelt tributes paint a picture of a man who was not only a gifted musician but also a cherished friend and colleague who brought joy and light wherever he went.
Zeke’s energy and cheerful demeanor made him a favorite among his bandmates and fans alike.
Whether he was lighting up the stage with his masterful fiddle playing or cracking jokes on the tour bus, Zeke left an indelible mark on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
