In a heartfelt tribute, country star Billy Ray Cyrus performed at the funeral of Corey Comperatore, the firefighter tragically killed in a shooting at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
The solemn event took place on Friday, July 19, at Cabot Church in Cabot, PA, where Comperatore was a long-time member.
Cyrus, 62, sang a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” and his 1992 hit “Some Gave All” during the celebration of life service.
Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old Army reservist veteran and former fire chief, was remembered for his bravery and dedication to his family and community.
According to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Comperatore “died trying to protect his family” during the tragic incident on Saturday, July 13.
Governor Shapiro emphasized the heroism of Comperatore, noting his efforts to shield his loved ones from harm.
A source close to the event mentioned, “Billy Ray Cyrus has always been passionate about honoring troops and first responders. Today, he was honored to join the family and perform during the service.”
The New York Times reported a procession of around 500 fire trucks, some from as far as Florida and Texas, accompanying the funeral from Cabot Church to the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company.
An electronic billboard in Freeport, PA, displayed a photo of Comperatore alongside the phrase “a real hero.”
At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, former President Trump paid tribute to Comperatore, calling him an “unbelievable person” and asking for a moment of silence from the crowd.
Trump also kissed the firefighter’s helmet during his speech.
The tragic event occurred at the Trump rally in Butler, PA, where the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire, resulting in Comperatore’s death and injuring two others.
The FBI identified the incident as an assassination attempt on Trump, who was injured mid-speech. The shooter was killed by the Secret Service.
In a press conference, Governor Shapiro honored Comperatore, highlighting his dedication as a father, firefighter, and churchgoer.
Comperatore’s sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, expressed her grief on Facebook, saying, “The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. He was a hero that shielded his daughters.”
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Comperatore’s family, with many mourning the loss of a man described as a true hero.
