George Strait, the “King of Country,” was honored with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the CMA Awards on November 20, 2024. This prestigious recognition shines a spotlight on his massive impact on country music over three decades.
With 33 studio albums and 60 No. 1 hits, Strait’s achievements are unmatched. His 44 chart-toppers on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs prove why he’s a true legend, not just in country but across the music world.
The Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award was created in 2012 at the 46th CMA Awards. Named after Willie Nelson, its first recipient, this prestigious honor is reserved for true legends in country music.
This award goes to artists who’ve achieved national and global fame, excelling in concerts, philanthropy, streaming, sales, and public influence. It’s not just about music, it’s about making an unmatched impact on the world.
Country stars took the stage to honor the legend who’s inspired them for over three decades. The heartfelt tribute celebrated his lasting impact on country music.
Lainey Wilson opened the tribute with a simple yet powerful performance of George Strait’s 1982 classic, “Amarillo By Morning” a hit for Strait in 1983. With just a guitar and fiddle, her rendition was both sweet and stunning, setting the tone for the night.
After Lainey, Jamey Johnson brought fire to the stage with a gripping performance of George Strait’s 2006 hit, “Give It Away.” Co-written by Johnson himself, the song hit No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, making this moment even more special.
Armed with his acoustic guitar and backed by a full band, Johnson gave the track a rugged, shuffling vibe. His fiery intensity and soulful delivery electrified the crowd, proving why this song remains a fan favorite.
Miranda Lambert and Parker McCollum hit the stage next, channeling George Strait’s signature style in classic all-black Stetsons. The duo performed a heartfelt rendition of his 2008 hit “Troubadour,” bringing timeless charm to the tribute.
Their smooth harmonies and undeniable chemistry captured the essence of the song, a nod to Strait’s legendary storytelling. The crowd couldn’t help but feel the emotion behind every note, making this a standout moment of the night.
With a quick shift in the spotlight, George Strait, the man of the hour, stepped into view alongside Chris Stapleton. The duo wowed the audience with their 2024 collaboration, “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame,” from Strait’s latest album, Cowboys and Dreamers .
Stapleton, who shared the stage and the spotlight, also had the honor of presenting Strait with the shimmering award. Strait accepted it graciously, delivering a heartfelt speech that showed just how much this recognition meant to him.
Clearly moved by the tribute from his fellow artists, Strait looked around at the incredible group on stage and said, “I want to thank all of these great artists who performed my songs tonight. It’s amazing to hear you all bring them to life. I’m just glad I got them before you!”
He went on to express his heartfelt thanks to friends, family, and everyone who helped make his legendary career possible, acknowledging the deep support that’s been with him every step of the way.
George Strait took center stage at the 2024 CMA Awards to accept the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. All eyes were on him as he began his heartfelt speech, starting with, “First of all, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
Strait expressed deep gratitude to the CMAs. “I want to thank the CMAs for adding my name to the incredible artists on this small list of recipients, carrying the name of the icon, Willie Nelson.” He also took a somber moment to honor his associates who passed away in 2024, reflecting on their contributions to his journey and legacy.
Strait also took a moment to thank his family in the audience, saying, “I want to thank my family who are all here tonight. My wife Norma, my son Bubba, his wife Tamara, and my grandkids, Harvey and Jillian.”
He paid a special tribute to Norma, his partner for over 50 years, saying, “Especially Norma, who has supported me for almost 53 years. It’s been an incredible journey together.”
The Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award has been given to some of the biggest names in country music, each of whom has left a lasting mark on the genre. Past honorees include Willie Nelson (2012), Kenny Rogers (2013), Johnny Cash (2015), Dolly Parton (2016), Kris Kristofferson (2019), Charley Pride (2020), Loretta Lynn (2021), and Alan Jackson (2022).
These legends have shaped country music’s growth and had a huge impact on both fans and the industry, making this award a true testament to their influence and contributions.
George Strait launched his career in the early ’80s with the release of his debut single, “Unwound,” for MCA Records. This track quickly rose to number six on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, marking the beginning of his legendary career.
In 1982, Strait followed up with his second album, Strait from the Heart , which earned critical acclaim. It also featured his first number-one hit, “Fool Hearted Memory,” further cementing his place in country music as a powerhouse of the genre.
George Strait quickly secured his spot at the top of the charts, showing off his versatility with a range of hits. Though his heart was in Texas dancehall music, he proved he could also master pop-influenced tunes, like “If You’re Thinking You Want a Stranger (There’s One Coming Home)” and smooth ballads, including “Marina Del Rey.”
Strait’s chart-topping streak continued with hits like his cover of “Right or Wrong,” the catchy “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” and the western swing classic “Am I Blue,” each showcasing his unique style and undeniable talent.
Strait’s life was struck by unimaginable tragedy when his 13-year-old daughter, Jenifer, died in a car accident in 1986. The loss deeply affected George and his family, leading him to withdraw from the media spotlight.
Despite the pain, he pushed forward and made his movie debut in 1992 with Pure Country , portraying a disillusioned country star, Dusty Chandler. The film’s soundtrack became his best-selling album, featuring hits like “I Cross My Heart” and “Heartland.”
George Strait has racked up countless accolades over the years, including 16 Grammy nominations and one win for Best Country Album with Troubadour in 2008. He’s also earned 17 CMA wins and 83 nominations, making him the most-nominated artist in CMA history and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
Among those wins, Strait has been named Entertainer of the Year three times (1989, 1990, and 2013). On top of that, he holds two all-time records at the ACM Awards with 19 wins and 81 nominations, cementing his legacy as a true country music icon.
George Strait, often called the “King of Country Music” by critics and writers, holds the record for the most number-one songs across all charts in any genre.
In 2014, Strait wrapped up his Cowboy Rides Away tour with a record-breaking concert at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, drawing a massive crowd of 104,793. This unforgettable show set the record for the largest indoor concert in North America.
