On November 20, 2024, the 58th Annual CMA Awards took place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. It was a big night for Cody Johnson and his friends.
When Johnson’s ninth studio record, Leather, won Album of the Year, he not only reached a major personal milestone, but he also left an indelible mark on the world of country music.
Strong competitors included Kacey Musgraves (Deeper Well), Luke Combs (Fathers & Sons), Chris Stapleton (Higher), and Jelly Roll (Whitsitt Chapel).
The win was huge. Johnson’s reaction was a mix of surprise and thanks, and Jelly Roll’s was just as emotional. He jumped out of his seat to hug Johnson like he was enjoying a championship win.
The evening was hosted by Lainey Wilson, Luke Bryan , and Peyton Manning, and it was full of famous acts, such as Johnson’s touching duet with Carrie Underwood on “I’m Gonna Love You.”
Johnson said that his wife Brandi was the key to his success and that she was the foundation of both his personal and business life.

He told her, “If it weren’t for Brandi, I’d probably be dead or in jail.” He was emphasizing how she had helped him become a better husband, father, and artist.
But this night wasn’t just about what had been done in the past; it also hinted at what might happen in the future.
Johnson talked about his big plans for 2025, which include a new record and tours in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. He said, “Big things are coming.”
Cody Johnson’s wife Brandi , whom he married in 2008, has always been there for him, no matter what.
With their two girls, Cori and Clara Mae, the couple has been through tough times that could have ended their career. “
Brandi was the first one out of her seat when my name was called,” Johnson told the press. All of this would not have been possible without her. The things Brandi has given up go back to the beginning of their marriage.
She quit college to work two jobs, which gave Johnson the money she needed to explore music. “She had full faith in me even when I didn’t believe in myself,” he said, remembering how she always saw his promise.
Johnson’s song “ The Painter,” which was a tribute to Brandi and how she changed his life, beautifully showed this relationship.
During Johnson’s CMA show with Underwood, their relationship was brought to light. As he watched the crowd respond to their duet, Brandi’s presence in his life became even more clear.
Johnson often says that she was the idea behind his most important works, like Leather, which he calls both a tribute to country music and a very personal project.
When Cody Johnson’s Leather came out in 2023, it quickly became a classic in modern country music.
The album, which had 12 original tracks and a deluxe version with 13 more songs, showed how dedicated Johnson was to quality and depth.
Johnson’s ability to mix traditional country sounds with modern elements was shown in his long-awaited duet with Carrie Underwood on “I’m Gonna Love You.” “C’mon, Cowgirl,” a song about father-daughter relationships, was one of the more personal songs on the record.
Johnson was moved to tears when he sang it for his wife and daughters at their Texas ranch.
These songs, along with lighter but still powerful ones like “Georgia Peaches” and more reflective ones like “The Mustang,” showed how versatile Johnson was.
In addition to being a great piece of art, Leather changed the way Johnson made music.
Using what he learned from making his Human : The double album in 2021, he carefully balanced the tempo, themes, and melodies on Leather to make sure that each song stood on its own and as part of the whole.
Johnson continued to break new ground with Leather Deluxe, making his position one of the most innovative acts in country music.
Even though Cody Johnson was happy about winning the CMA, he was already thinking about what was next.
He talked strongly about his plans to “change country music for the better” in interviews on the red carpet.
This includes a new album, tours around the world, and possible work with singers like Post Malone , Lainey Wilson, and Jelly Roll.
Johnson’s commitment to new ideas was clear in the duet he sang with Underwood. When he thought back on the recording process, he said, “It felt like perfect family harmony” when they sang together live.
Because of how well they worked together, people are looking forward to his next projects. Johnson’s plan also includes using songs from his huge personal collection that haven’t been released yet.
One song that stands out was written with Brandi during their early troubles. “It’s beautiful,” he said, implying that it might be released soon.
Johnson is still dedicated to honoring the roots of country music while welcoming its changing future on his Leather Deluxe Tour in 2025 .
He said, “This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole life.” “I’ve been getting ready for 18 years, and now I’m ready to go to the next level.”
Cody Johnson is ready to change the genre in the years to come thanks to his skill, his vision, and the support of his family and friends.
