The Harry Potter films are jam-packed with magic and surprises, not only the apparent ones but also the hidden ones. These hidden treasures, which are often overlooked by viewers, have made the movies 10 times better.
Only a sharp-eyed viewer would be able to catch these Easter Eggs. Luckily for you, we’ve gathered a list of hidden details added by the filmmakers in the movie series.
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in the scene where the owls’ deliver mail, Neville Longbottom receives a Remembrall. A Remembrall is a magical item that fills up with red smoke when something is forgotten.
Viewers who were watching closely would remember that Neville wasn’t wearing a typical black cloak like the other students and couldn’t remember what he had forgotten. This small, overlooked detail acted as a character development for Neville and hinted at his quirky nature.
Another minute detail viewers might have missed is the appearance of the Harry Potter books in the movie. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry accidentally says the wrong spell and ends up in Knockturn Alley.
Fortunately, Hagrid arrives at the scene and quickly rescues the lost boy. While they’re going back to the Diagon Alley, they pass a bookstore with Harry Potter novels on display in the windows.
Something all of us must have missed in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was the extent of Lucius Malfoys anger. As Harry confronts Lucius Malfoy about him planting Tom Riddle’s diary in Ginny Weasley’s cauldron, Lucius grows angry.
Upon his denial, Harry keeps pushing for Lucius’ admission of truth, which leads to Lucius fishing out his wand and threatening Harry with it, spelling out “Avada,” but Dobby interrupts him. It should be noted that “Avada Kedavra” is among the three “Unforgivable Curses.”
In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Fred and George give Harry the Marauder’s Map. The map is a magical item that tracks the movement of every person and thing in the Hogwarts castle.
The first shot of the map involves Harry holding it, and there’s a display of all the nicknames of all the creators: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. However, the name Moony is misspelled as it is written out as “Mooney,” which was done on purpose because it was about the movie’s visual effects supervisor, Karl Mooney.
Of course, nothing less could be expected from the Harry Potter producers. The dining halls were filled with food that was very wizard-specific, including brands that were only related to the wizarding world.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as the trio is walking down the Great Hall, a box of “Cheeri-Owls” comes into the shot, placed at the left of Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang. This was a fun little reference to the real breakfast cereal, Cheerios.
In Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix, Mr. Weasley and Harry Potter make their way to a certain red telephone booth in London. This booth is the visitors’ entrance to the Ministry of Magic.
To access the Ministry, Mr. Weasley puts in some counts and then dials 6-2-4-4-2. If you look closely, these numbers are spelled out as magic on the telephone pad, which is another fun Easter egg in the movie.
Harry, in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was given the role of Gryffindors’ Quidditch Team Captain and is seen wearing a team shirt with a 7 written on it. This 7 could have two meanings.
One is that it can reflect all that is to come in the future about Harry Potter’s role as the seventh of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, or it can refer to the number of Harry Potter books, which is seven.
Gilderoy Lockhart, Harry’s second-year Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, was an intriguing character who would always go on and on about his extravagant exploits. However, when he’s tasked with saving Ginny Weasley in the chamber of secrets, Harry and Ron catch him fleeing Hogwarts.
As this scene is captured on camera, another detail comes into view: a luxurious blond wig sitting on the professor’s table. This was a smart indication of Lockhart’s personality, which was that of a liar, as the guy even lied about having hair.
In the wizarding world, a wand reflects the deep personality traits of its owners, and Professor Slughorn’s wand could be said to reflect this. For starters, if one looks closely, the tip of his wand’s handle comes out in two round prong shapes, which can either be considered as a slug head or a pair of horns.
Similarly, the wand is protected by a metal casing and painted black and silver. This reflects extravagance and the professors’ fixation on luxury.
In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry and Ron are seen playing chess, an important element of the wizard lifestyle. During the game, Ron can capture Harry’s knights with his queen.
This scene, which seems minor to the onlooker, holds great significance. This is because Harry, Ron, and Hermione later on in the movie have to play a life-sized game of wizard’s chess.
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry goes into Dumbledore’s office to seek the truth regarding Barty Couch, Jr. During this scene, Dumbledore turns towards a glass display case filled with several magical items.
A pyramid with a circle in the middle is present to the left of the frame. This was the insignia for the Deathly Hollows, indicating what was to come in the future.
In the final movie of the Harry Potter series, the final scene features Harry, Ginny, Hermione, and Ron sending their children to Hogwarts at King’s Cross Station in London. Draco Malfoy, his wife, and their son were also in the scene.
And guess what? Draco’s wife was Tom Felton’s real-time girlfriend at the time. The wife’s character was played by Jade Olivia Gordon.
The romantic progression between Ron and Hermione wasn’t evident until the fourth movie. However, there’s this one scene in the Prisoner of Azkaban that can’t be missed.
During the movie, Hermione keeps using the Time Turner to time travel, popping in and out of scenes. Ron gets confused figuring out where Hermione keeps going, while no one else is paying attention to this fact.
We all are well aware of Harry’s amazing Quidditch skills, but did you know Professor McGonagall had a Quidditch skill set of her own? This easy-to-miss detail was cleverly placed by the director in the first movie.
When Harry expresses anxiety over playing the match, Hermoine takes both Ron and Harry to show them the trophy display in which James’ name is also present. A smaller plaque to the right of James Potter’s name reveals McGonagall’s name too, a player of 1971.
The actress who played McGonagall, Maggie Smith died this year. For more details on this, check out Maggie Smith Dies at 89: Remembering the Harry Potter Star .
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Snape starts questioning Harry about different potions and knowledge the little kid has no idea about. Snape asks if Harry knows what would happen if the powdered root of asphodel is mixed with wormwood.
Asphodel is a type of lily, and wormwood signifies loss and bitterness, showing Snape’s remorse over Lilly’s (Harry’s mother) death.
