Loved country singer and winner of The Voice season 11, Jason “Sundance” Head, almost died in an accident at his ranch in East Texas on November 15, 2024.
Sundance was hunting by himself when his life took a turn he didn’t expect. He was known for his deep music and big personality.
Around 4:30 PM, he reached into his car to get a 22 caliber gun, but the gun accidentally went off and hit him in the gut. The event happened quickly and shocked everyone.
Sundance later said, “It happened so quickly, and I could see the bullet flying off.”
Sundance chose to walk to get help because she couldn’t reach her phone right away and was bleeding heavily. He waved cars down on the main road, but the first ten drivers didn’t pay attention.
A Good Samaritan finally came along, called 911, and stayed with him until help arrived.
Sundance was flown to UT Tyler Hospital , where doctors and nurses stabilized him. Even though his wound was life-threatening, the bullet miraculously missed his important organs and lodged in his abdominal wall.
In the end, doctors chose not to take out the bullet, and Sundance’s wife, Misty Head, said that his “girth” might have helped protect important parts of his body.
Misty, who often posted updates on social media, was very thankful to the Good Samaritan, first responders, and hospital staff.
Sundance was sent home on November 16, but he was still in a lot of pain and bleeding through his bandages during the three-hour drive home.
Both how fragile life is and how strong the human spirit is are shown by what happened.
Misty , Sundance’s wife, went through a very scary experience. On the day of the accident, she got a call from rescuers telling her that her husband had been shot and was being flown to Tyler for emergency care by life flight.
Misty talked about how crazy it was trying to get her kids together and get to the hospital, where they found Sundance already stable but in a lot of pain.
As Misty described what happened in the crash, she said, “He was outside the car reaching in to get his 22.”
The gun shot off when he pulled it out of its holster and hit the outside of the Jeep just right. She made it clear that it wasn’t his hunting gun and that the injury was completely unintentional.
Misty wrote on social media that Sundance thought he had called 911 at first because he was in so much pain. The truth was that his bloody phone had fallen into his pocket.
This realization made him want to get help on the side of the road, but several cars refused to help, which made the situation even worse.
According to Misty, ten cars drove by before someone finally stopped. She thanked the stranger who saved her husband’s life.
When they got to the hospital, doctors decided that the person did not need surgery because the bullet had not hurt them inside.
Misty later thought about how chance played a part in what happened and said, “Anything higher or lower would have been devastating.”
She said that the quick action of first responders and the skill of the UT Tyler medical team were what kept Sundance alive.
A heartfelt video from Sundance was sent to his friends on November 17, just two days after the accident.
The video, which was shot at his house in front of a Christmas tree, showed both his physical pain and his deep thanks.
First, Sundance thanked God, the hospital staff, and the person who came to help him. “Man, I don’t think I would have made it without you,” he said, adding that things could have turned out very badly if more time had passed.
Sundance said, “I was sure that I was going to die,” and said it was one of the scariest things he had ever done.
He praised the first rescuers for how quickly and effectively they helped, calling them “wonderful” and admiring how hard they worked.
As he talked about how only two men finally stopped to help, it was clear how much it hurt him emotionally to be ignored by many passing cars.
He told the Good Samaritan, “It wasn’t a coincidence that we met,” hoping that they would become friends.
Even though she had been hurt, Sundance was determined to get better and move on. “I have a lot of life left,” he said, stressing how thankful he was to have made it through.
He also said he would talk about the accident in more detail in the coming weeks to teach others about gun safety and how important it is to stick together in times of trouble.
People are familiar with Sundance Head. Son of Roy Head , a famous musician from the 1960s best known for his hit song “Treat Her Right,” Sundance has continued his father’s musical tradition.
Before winning The Voice in 2016 as a part of Blake Shelton’s team, he made it to the semi-finals of American Idol in 2007. He had a lot of fans because of his powerful vocals and honest emotions in his shows.
Because of the accident, people are paying more attention to how strong Sundance is as an artist and as a person. He always uses his platform to meet with fans and talk about his life. He is known for having a big personality and a soft heart.
The scary events of November 15 have made many people admire him even more. Fans sent the singer a lot of words of support, prayers, and well-wishes on social media, showing how close they are to each other.
Sundance stays focused on his family and singing while he heals. During this whole ordeal, his wife Misty and their children have been rock solid. Misty’s honest reports have given fans comfort.
This event also serves as a lesson of how important it is to be careful with guns and show compassion.
The story of Sundance’s survival, which is filled with bravery, faith, and the kindness of strangers, shows that the human spirit can last and win.
From a near-fatal accident to recovery, Sundance’s story is a powerful one of hope and thanks. It shows how fragile life is and how important community is in times of trouble.
While he continues to get better, his story will no doubt inspire many and remind them value of faith and toughness that have shaped his life and work.
