The Critics Choice Association released the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards nominations on December 12, 2024. The list included some of the year’s best films, according to critics.
Wicked and Conclave emerged as the top contenders, with each film getting 11 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Acting Ensemble.
The movie version of Wicked by Jon M. Chu wowed viewers with its lively plot and great acting, especially from Cynthia Erivo (Winner for Best Actress) as Elphaba and Ariana Grande (Winner for Best Supporting Actress) as Glinda.
At the same time, Edward Berger’s Conclave told an exciting story about the Vatican’s secrets, which earned Ralph Fiennes a nod for Best Actor. Dune: Part Two and Emilia Pérezcame close behind, each getting ten votes.
Notably, Timothée Chalamet was nominated for Best Actor for his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Selena Gomez was nominated for Best Song for her song “Mi Camino” by Emilia Pérez.
Anora and The Substance are two other great films with seven votes each. Mikey Madison was nominated for Best Actress for the first time for her part as a young sex worker in Anora.
Demi Moore’s transformative performance in the body horror movie The Substance made her a strong contender in the same category.
The 2025 Critics Choice Awards also honor the creative minds who made these films possible.
When it comes to Best Director Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) are among the best in the industry.
Jon M. Chu (Wicked) and Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two) joined the group. They show a wide range of artistic styles and ways of telling stories. Excellence in screenwriting has also been recognized.
For their unique stories, Sean Baker (Anora) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) stand out in the Best Original Screenplay category.
The Best Adapted Screenplay award goes to films like Wicked (Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox) and Conclave (Peter Straughan), written by more than one person working together.
The year’s most interesting stories have been shaped by how direction and scriptwriting work together.
The Substance has been praised for its bold storytelling and troubling themes and nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actress.
Coralie Fargeat’s win for Best Screenplay at Cannes makes her movie an even bigger favorite among critics.
This year’s Critics Choice Awards have a lot of great performing categories.
Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), and Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) are the front-runners for Best Actor because their roles make people feel deeply.
This year’s male acting nominees are extreme, as shown by Adrien Brody’s performance in The Brutalist and Daniel Craig’s performance in Queer.
Critics have been blown away by Cynthia Erivo’s performance as Elphaba in Wicked and Mikey Madison’s life-changing part as Anora in Anora.
Angelina Jolie (Maria), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) are the other actresses in this very tough group. The supporting areas are just as strong.
Yura Borisov’s subtle performance in Anora and Ariana Grande’s bubbly performance as Glinda in Wicked have both been nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Actor.
The Best Acting Ensemble award recognizes the combined brilliance of casts from films like Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Conclave.
One of the best parts of this year is that new actors and actresses are recognized in the Best Young Actor/Actress category.
Some nominees who stand out are Alyla Browne ( Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ) and Alisha Weir (Abigail) . They show the next generation of movie stars.
As the 2025 Critics Choice Awards get closer, the nominations look at how this year’s awards season might go.
Critically acclaimed films like Wicked, Conclave, and The Substance are about to take over the talk. This is because they are in the running for Golden Globes and Oscar awards.
Critics and people who work in the movie business are paying close attention to categories like Best Picture and Best Actress, where big names like Demi Moore and Cynthia Erivo compete with up-and-comers like Mikey Madison.
Also, the fact that foreign voices like Jacques Audiard and Coralie Fargeat are in the Best Director category makes a lot of noise.
The Critic’s Choice choices show how the movie industry is changing, in addition to the awards themselves.
From The Substance’s look at identity and getting older to Emilia Pérez’s mix of musical and thriller styles, this year’s nominees desire to break the rules and rethink how stories are told.
Chelsea Handler will host the 2025 Critics Choice Awards for the third year. The show will air live on E! on January 12, 2025, at 7 p.m. ET.
As people watch to honor the best in films, the event will be a reminder of how powerful stories can be and how appealing films have always been.
