Imagine standing up against racism only to find that not just your life but your child’s life is being threatened. That’s the shocking reality Morris faced after criticizing Wallen for his use of a racial slur.
During a candid conversation on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast on August 29, Morris revealed that she received death threats directed not only at her but also at her young son, Hayes.
The chilling threats came after Morris criticized Wallen for using a racial slur, highlighting the toxic environment that can brew in the entertainment industry when artists take a stand against bigotry.
Back in February 2021, Morgan Wallen was caught on video using a racial slur, an incident that sent shockwaves through the country music community and beyond.
Many artists, including Maren Morris, Mickey Guyton, and Kelsea Ballerini , were quick to condemn Wallen’s actions, calling for accountability and change within the industry.
Morris, known for her outspoken nature and commitment to progressive values, didn’t mince words in her response.
In a tweet, Morris argued that Wallen’s behavior was indeed reflective of broader issues in the country music scene, stating,
“It actually IS representative of our town because this isn’t his first ‘scuffle’ and he just demolished a huge streaming record last month regardless.”
Her message highlighted how the industry often protects and elevates problematic figures, turning a blind eye to their actions as long as they continue to be profitable.
Morgan Wallen issued public apologies through videos and interviews following the incident.
However, this is not the first time Morgan Wallen has been involved in scandalous behavior, as he has a history of controversy.
Just recently Morgar was supposed to go to court in Nashville on August 15, but his date has been moved to December 12, according to TOC.
After an event at Eric Church’s rooftop bar in April, Wallen is being charged with three felonies: disorderly behavior, public endangerment, and three counts of reckless endangerment.
Country artist Morgan Wallen, 30, was booked early today on 3 cts of felony reckless endangerment and 1 ct of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for throwing a chair from the rooftop of Chief's Bar Sun night. Taking a stand in a predominantly conservative industry like country music isn’t easy, and Morris’s decision to call out Wallen came with severe consequences.
On the podcast, she shared how the backlash turned frighteningly personal, with threats being made against her life and, disturbingly, against her son Hayes as well. As a mother, the safety of her child is paramount, making these threats all the more alarming and distressing.
“I mean, the death threat portion for me as a young mother was, yeah, obviously, like, scary,” Morris admitted. “And it wasn’t death threats against me. It was against my son, too. So it’s like, ‘Oh, wow. Now we’re involving the kids, the ones that you cared so much about.’”
These threats underscore the risks that come with speaking out against entrenched cultural issues. The backlash Morris experienced wasn’t just about defending Wallen; it was also about a segment of fans who took her criticism as a personal affront.
Morris reflected on how people could be so angry over her condemning Wallen’s use of a racial slur, suggesting that their reaction says more about their own biases and insecurities than about her comments.
Morris’s outspokenness is not limited to this incident. She has consistently used her platform to push for inclusivity and change within the country music community.
Her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, support for the Black Lives Matter movement, and criticism of transphobia have made her a polarizing figure in a genre often characterized by its traditional values.
One notable clash occurred in August 2022 when Morris engaged in a public spat with Brittany Aldean, wife of country singer Jason Aldean , after Brittany made comments perceived as transphobic.
Morris, in her trademark direct style, referred to Aldean as “Insurrection Barbie,”a remark that went viral and sparked further debate about the role of artists in speaking out on social issues.
This incident, much like her criticism of Wallen, was met with both support and severe backlash.
Standing up for her beliefs has not come without personal and professional costs for Morris. The threats against her family and the vitriol directed her way are heavy burdens to bear.
Despite this, Morris remains unapologetic, emphasizing the importance of staying true to her values. On the Work in Progress podcast, she discussed the emotional toll of the threats and the fear they instilled, but she also expressed her resolve to continue advocating for what she believes is right.
“I think it’s because they’re not only, like, defending the person that said this, but they are taking it personally as if I’m criticizing them,”Morris explained.
Her perspective sheds light on the complexities of public discourse in the age of social media, where criticism of one figure can be perceived as an attack on an entire group.
Morris’s experiences highlight a broader issue within the country music industry : the need for greater inclusivity and accountability.
By taking a stand, Morris is not only challenging her peers to be better but is also encouraging fans to rethink what they tolerate from their idols. Her actions have sparked important conversations about racism, homophobia, and the role of artists in shaping cultural narratives.
In the wake of the backlash, Morris has contemplated her place within the country music world. Her decision to embrace a more pop-oriented sound in her recent work could be seen as a reflection of her desire to distance herself from the traditional constraints of the genre.
Morris’s shift in musical direction and her outspoken nature suggest that she is carving out a space where she can be true to herself and her values without compromise.
