Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith made a rare appearance together, ending a six-month streak of staying out of the public eye. They were last seen in May at the Los Angeles premiere of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, joined by their kids.
The couple was seen leaving Crossroads Kitchen in Calabasas, Calif., on November 7. Photos captured them walking arm-in-arm, heading to the parking lot in a sweet moment.
The couple dined at a restaurant co-owned by Travis Barker, joined by their close friend and mental health podcast host Jay Shetty. Jada had previously discussed her memoir Worthy with Shetty on his podcast, where he read a letter from Will to her.
In the letter, Will wrote, “I applaud and honor you. If I had read this book 30 years ago, I definitely would’ve hugged you more.” Jada, holding back tears and laughing, responded, “That’s beautiful. That’s why I can’t divorce that joker.”
The two first crossed paths in 1994 when Jada auditioned for Will’s show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. They tied the knot in 1997, starting their journey together.
Will told PEOPLE in 1996 that his connection with Jada came as “a huge surprise,”. The couple shares two kids, Jaden and Willow, along with Trey, Will’s son from his first marriage to Sheree Zampino.
In 2013, Jada made a comment that some fans took as an indication of an open marriage. She clarified on Facebook, saying, “Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship…this means we have a GROWN one.”
She also emphasized, “[Will is] my best friend. He’s been by my side through some of the most difficult parts of my life.”
Amid divorce rumors in 2015, Will took to Facebook to address his marriage to Jada. “Under normal circumstances, I don’t usually respond to foolishness. (Because it’s contagious) But, so many people have extended me their ‘deepest condolences’ that I figured – ‘I can be foolish, too!'” he wrote.
He then reassured fans, “Jada and I are…NOT GETTING A DIVORCE! I promise you all – if I ever decide to divorce my Queen – I SWEAR I’ll tell you myself!”
For their 20th anniversary On 31st Dec 2017, Will posted a heartfelt tribute to Jada on Instagram with a throwback from their wedding day. He wrote, “Love is Like Gardening. I have learned to focus on HELPING you to BLOSSOM into what YOU want to be.”
He continued, “Love is Listening. Love is Giving. Love is Freedom. Happy Anniversary, My Queen! I am forever Devoted to Nurturing your Deepest Truth.”
Jada Pinkett Smith’s relationship with singer August Alsina became a topic of public attention in 2020. She confirmed an “entanglement” with August during a period of separation from Will.
Jada explained on Red Table Talk that the relationship was part of a healing process, and she and Will worked through it together. August later revealed in an interview that he had fallen in love with Jada, but their relationship was ultimately short-lived.
After Jada’s shocking revelation about her “entanglement” with August Alsina, Will opened up more about his marriage in a candid interview with GQ and in his memoir, Will . He wrote, “Our marriage wasn’t working. We could no longer pretend. We were both miserable and clearly something had to change.”
Will also revealed that Jada never believed in conventional marriage, explaining, “For the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.”
In a November 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Will shared that the couple hit a rough patch in September 2011 after a heated argument at Jada’s 40th birthday party. Will had spent three years planning the celebration, which included family, friends, and a documentary about her ancestors.
However, when they returned to the hotel, Jada criticized the event, calling it “the most disgusting display of ego.” The fight woke their 10-year-old daughter, Willow, who was in tears. Will said that’s when they realized their marriage wasn’t working.
The couple made headlines when Will slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars after Rock joked about Jada’s alopecia. Will yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth.”
Shortly after the viral Oscars moment, Will apologized on Instagram. Despite winning his first Oscar that night for Best Actor, he was banned from Academy events, including the Oscars, for the next decade.
Jada revealed in Oct 2023 before the release of her memoir, Worthy, that she and Will had been separated since 2016. She made it clear, though, that divorce was never on the table, promising they’d never take that step.
The pair have stayed close despite their separation, frequently showing public support for one another. They describe their relationship as a journey, saying they’re “still figuring it out.”
The incident between Will and Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars gave Jada unexpected clarity. She later referred to it as the “holy slap,” saying, “so many positive things came after it.”
Reflecting on her marriage, Jada shared, “After all those years trying to figure out if I would leave Will’s side, it took that slap for me to see I will never leave him.”
Will Smith was seen leaving the prestigious Art Basel event in Miami in December 2023 with a woman who was not immediately recognizable. What caught attention was how much she resembled his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
The sighting raised eyebrows, sparking curiosity about the nature of their connection. However, neither Will nor Jada have publicly commented on the encounter, leaving fans to speculate.
The couple reunited on the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of Bad Boys: Ride or Die in May 2024. This family outing marked the first public photos of Will and Jada together since news of their separation broke.
“Why it fractured, that’s a lot of things,” Jada reflected on their marriage in October 2023. “I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying.”
During a screening of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Will opened up about his deep affection for Jada, his wife of nearly 30 years, calling her his “ride-or-die.”
“I’ve always been blessed that there’s never been a time in my life when I didn’t look to the side and have a ride or die right there,” he said. “Jada is one of the most gangsta ride-or-die’s I’ve ever had.”
