In this blog post, I’ll walk you through how to get Tax Clearance Certificate in Nigeria. I got mine last Friday and honestly, the sense of relief is very real!

Because I know how confusing the process can seem from the outside, I decided to document exactly how I got it done for my new business, even before commencing operations.

If you are a startup founder or a new business owner trying to figure out how to obtain firs tax clearance certificate for your registered company, grab a seat. This post is for you!

What Is a Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC)?

Before we dive into the steps, let’s get the basics out of the way.

A Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC)is an official document issued by a relevant tax authority confirming that an individual or a company has accurately paid its taxes for a required period. For a brand-new business like mine, it simply serves as your official entry into the tax system, showing you are compliant from day one.

Types of Tax Clearance Certificates in Nigeria

Depending on your situation, you will need one of these two:

  • Company Tax Clearance:Issued to registered corporate entities (Limited Liability Companies) by the Federal authority—formerly FIRS, now the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).
  • Personal Tax Clearance:Issued to individuals and enterprise owners (Business Names) by your respective State Internal Revenue Service(e.g., LIRS in Lagos).

In this post, I am focusing strictly on the Company Tax Clearance Certificateissued by the NRS/FIRS.

Who Issues Company Tax Clearance Certificate in Nigeria?

The Company TCCis issued by:

  • Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) (now NRS)

While personal TCC is handled by state tax authorities, company tax matters fall under federal jurisdiction.

Requirements for Company Tax Clearance Certificate

Before you head out to the FIRS/NRS office in Nigeria, make sure you have your documents ready. For a new business that is yet to commence operations, here is exactly what I took with me:

  • CAC Certificate:Must be for a registered Company (e.g., LTD), not a Business Name. Go with at least 3 copies.
  • CAC Status Report: Go with at least 3 copies. Download this from CAC portal.
  • CAC Mermat: Go with at least 3 copies of the first 20 pages of your company CAC memorandum of association. Download this from CAC portal.
  • Company Letterhead:Go with at least 3 copies of your company official letterhead.
  • Company Stamp:You will need this to stamp the forms they give you.
  • Valid ID Card:Your personal identification (NIN, Driver’s License, or Voter’s Card). Make photocopies.
  • Active Email Address: Do not use an email you cannot access! This is crucial for the online portal.

How To Get FIRS Tax Clearance Certificate – My Experience

Let me walk you through the exact process I followed:

Step 1: Visit FIRS Office for Registration

I physically visited a nearby FIRS office.

At the office:

  • I was given forms to fill
  • I submitted my company documents
  • I provided a valid email address

After completing everything, I was told:

“You will be contacted once your registration is approved.”

Step 2: Account Activation via TaxPro Max Portal

A few hours later, I received a message via WhatsApp that my registration had been approved.

I was then instructed to:

  1. Visit the FIRS TaxPro Max portal:
  2. Click on LOGIN
  3. Click on Forgot Password
  4. Enter the email address I used during registration
  5. Click Send Password Reset Link
  6. Check my email and reset my password

After that, I successfully logged into my TaxPro Max dashboard.

Important Note

At this point, I initially thought I could download my TCC directly…

But I realized something important 👇

Your dashboard alone does not automatically give you your Tax Clearance Certificate.

You still need to apply for it via another portal.

How Long Does It Take to Get Tax Clearance Certificate in Nigeria?

    From my experience:

    • Registration approval: Same day (few hours)
    • TCC generation: Immediately after TCC registration approval (if compliant)

    However, delays may occur if:

    • Your tax records are incomplete
    • You have outstanding tax liabilities
    • Incomplete documentation
    • Invalid email address especially if the email have been previously used for the same purpose in the past. For example, if you have applied for TIN for a business name in the past at FIRS with the same email address.

Benefits of Having a Tax Clearance Certificate

Having your company TCC gives you several advantages:

    • Ability to apply for government contracts
    • Easier access to business loans and grants
    • Builds credibility and trust
    • Required for opening corporate bank accounts

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Registering with a business name instead of a company
    • Providing an invalid email address
    • Ignoring messages from FIRS/NRS

Getting your Company Tax Clearance Certificate in Nigeriais not as difficult as many people think.

Once your company is properly registered and your tax records are in order, the process becomes fast and straightforward.
