リッツはフライをバーブレスにすべきだと強く主張して、ファリオクラブの会合でもメンバーにバーブレスフックを推奨している。
彼の意見はノン・バーブレス・フライフィッシャーは真のスポーツマンではない、それを使うフライフィッシャーを軽侮するとまで言っていた

Charles Ritz is indeed a good friend and from time to time he has
tried patiently
to improve my casting.
But I have only fished with him once on the Ichen. Even this single occasion,
howev
er ,was enough to show the "Old Man"
(as the the young feller will
call himself)
can easily live up to his reputation.
He insisted on casting an incredibly long line.
Partly, I suspect, for the sheer hell of it-for he knows my own opinion that a long
line serves to meke drag more likely and the hooking of a fish more difficult.
We then came upon a difficult time. Several trout were nimphing just below the s-
urface, but paying no attention to any that I put near them.
Charles was watching.
"Those are wise fish" he said ,"so I must show you how to catch them."
He then gave me a lesson on fishing the downstream business indeed to the -
"unfair" method, usually quite rightly banned, or fishing a downstream nymph like
a wet fly. "The idea," he said, "is that the trout should see the nymph before the
nylon must on no account drag"
