チュニジアのジン・アビディン・ベンアリ大統領とその家族はサウジアラビアに逃亡、暫定大統領にはモハメド・ガンヌーシ首相が就任した。経済状況が悪化する中、支配層の腐敗が進んで国民の不満が高まっていたのだが、その不満を爆発させたひとつの要因が告発支援サイトWikiLeaksだった。（下に文書の要約部分を掲載）
勿論、WikiLeaksが外に出している文書はアメリカ側の見方なわけで、内容にバイアスがかかっていることを忘れてはならないが、昨年12月7日に公表された文書の場合、チュニジアの庶民が感じていたことが書かれていたため、抗議行動の引き金になったようだ。
ベンアリが逃げ込んだサウジアラビアも人ごとではない。サウジアラビアでも国民の王室に対する不満は鬱積、何とか力で押さえ込んでいる状態だ。中東／北アフリカの「親米国」は独裁国家ばかりであり、いずれも同じ問題を抱えている。もし、「民主化のドミノ倒し」が起こったならば、間違いなく中東は「反米地帯」になる。チュニジアでの出来事をもっとも懸念しているのはアメリカの支配層かもしれない。
