Four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones has resolved his contract dispute with the Kansas City Chiefs, the team announced, bringing an end to his prolonged holdout that saw him miss the season-opening game against the Detroit Lions.

While Jones is still entering the final year of his existing contract, the revised agreement offers multiple incentives that could significantly boost his earnings in 2023, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Originally slated to earn a base salary of $19.5 million this season, Jones incurred more than $2 million in mandatory fines during his holdout and forfeited a game check for the opener.

During his holdout, Jones watched the Chiefs' opening game from a suite at Arrowhead Stadium.

Jones himself had expressed his desire to remain with the Chiefs at a recent charity event, saying, "It's always been my goal to be a Kansas City Chief for life."

Jones' contract extension comes amidst a trend of significant deals for defensive tackles this offseason. Players like Jeffery Simmons, Daron Payne, Dexter Lawrence, Javon Hargrave, and Quinnen Williams all secured contracts exceeding $80 million.

Originally drafted by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Mississippi State, Jones signed a four-year, $80 million extension before the 2020 season. He has consistently been Kansas City's top defensive player and played a pivotal role in the team's Super Bowl victories in 2020 and 2023. With an impressive 15½ sacks in 2022, Jones led all interior defensive linemen in the league and has earned Pro Bowl selections for four consecutive seasons, along with first-team All-Pro honors in 2022.
