FUND SUMMARY Vanguard Balanced Index Fund seeks growth and income. The fund normally invests 60% of assets in equities and 40% in bonds. The equity portion seeks to replicate the Wilshire 5000 Index performance; to this end, the fund invests primarily in the 500 largest companies on the index and samples the rest. The fixed-income portion seeks to replicate the Lehman Brothers Aggregate Bond Index performance; it may purchase investment-grade U.S. government obligations, corporate debt, and mortgage-backed securities to secure this goal.
