For those who have been walked on their life..
First, your girlCharlize Theron( A beautiful site to see, with exceptions of Monster,
)is a rape victim who loses her regards to any living male (her Oscar was well deserved).
Now she is... what? ...another rap victim in "Northern Country." Not that the redundancy takes away from her skills, but we've seen a stronger performance out of her in Monster. If you want to see a disgruntled female employee
with a male chauvinist employer and a cowardly father who finally grows as much balls as his daughter...captured in depressing cinematography then " North Country
" is your movie. It was well portrayed about the life of this poor women.
The acting and the overall movie was great Keep in mind there are tons of sexual references and offensive language.
The only good thing about the movie as far as entertainment value is the acting. "North Country" is not a bad movie, but it's just not for everyone.
Charlize Theronmakes an Oscar-worthy lead
, but the supporting cast is also sensational. Frances McDormandis plucky and funny as always
, even as she falls victim to a terminally crippling condition, and Sean Bean's sensitive portrayal of her husband, Kyle, is full of love.
The women who portrayJosey's mistreated co-workers varyin age and size are not given too much to deal with, but the characters are defined as not wanted to get involved with Josey's lawsuit
Richard Jenkins' distant father is all-too-real,
though his character is redeemed by a touching speech in his daughter's defense.
Thomas Curtis as Josey's teenage son spends all of the film very angry; at the world, at his situation, and especially at his mother.
He is gullible and believes the town gossip about Josey being a trouble-making sl*t.
【Charlize Theron】North Country【Woody Harrelson】 Rape!!!...did somebody scream rape???
Even if " North Country
" wasn't as good as it is overall, it still would have been worth watching for its story. A fictionalized account oftrue events sympathize with anyone on screen
, you'll likely be feeling angry and resentful
; angry for the people who did this things, resentful for the company that let them get away with everything. The powerful storytelling and the stunning performances
by pretty much everyone make this my favorite film of the year (so far).
"North Country" is set in 1989, over ten years after the true story on which it was based.
By this time, the women's liberation movement had eruptedin the '70sand then quieted down as women in the workplace became more and more accepted. It was not so shocking any longer to find a female lawyer, doctor, or airplane pilot; for most people, and for most jobs. But in Northern Minnesota
, where mining is the "bread and butter"for many small-town economies, women have not been so readily accepted as equals. After women were allowed to enter the mines to work, a few did because, as a union worker, their jobs were steady and their pay was good. But there are still the men who cannot believe that this is happening in " their
" mine...which for many generations was a boy's club. Some men, stubborn to change their chauvinistic ways, responded to thisthreat of the status quo breakingby relentlessly harassing the female mine workers, both verbally, physically, and sexually.
All of these problems aside, " North Country
" is a good movie that highlights the grim realities of living with sexual harassment
and of making the choice between putting up with things no one should have to put up with or starving. Theron really grows into the roleand even if her character had to put up with a series of unfortunate events that would have made even the Baudelaire's give up in defeat
, she still manages to make her appealing without turning her into the epitome of perfection. It isTheronwho holds this movie together,Theronand the stark visuals andthe haunting Bob Dylan songs. " North Country
" isn't in the same league as Silkwood
, but it's still a very good entry into the little guy going up against the rich corporate entity genre and well worth watching.
Theron, Little Guy against the mean corporate entity story, Grim look & feel !!
