Anything in your eyes. Say Anything.
This is my all time favorite movie. I enjoyedevery secondof this picture. John Cusackis simply amazing in this one. If you like the type of movie where the dorky guy gets the most popular girl
in school this movie is a must see. The movie is not a typical chessy 80's flick.
It is actually a very intelligent picture. As both a single guy with more than his share of heartbreak, and an avid movie watcher, it's very easy to be disenchanted with romantic comedies.
Notting Hill), sometimes they're too cute (Jerry Maguire), and sometimes they're just downright awful (Runaway Bride).
"Say Anything" works. It's a very down-to-earth movie, well-acted by good actors (John Cusack and Ione Skye) as real people. John Cusackplays Lloyd, an almost normal guy who really thinks he could have something special with class valedictorian Diane (Ione Skye). Even if he can win her over, he'll have to deal with her overprotective father (John Mahoney). The realism of this movie is a big factor in its appeal to me. Most couples facing a crisis don't come up with big, perfectly scripted response
Sometimes they falter, even when they get their point across. The dialogue in " Say Anything
" is some of the best. One scene that immediately comes to mind is the scenewith John Cusack in a phone booth being rained upon, telling his sister that he's been dumped. He can't make up his mind how to feel. That's how life is.
The ending is predictable,
and just a tad bit contrived, but there isn't an "ideal ending", and this is as close as they come. In the movie,Diane tells Lloyd after their first datethat she's never dated someone so basic. That's how this movie feels. This isn't a psychological movie like "Fight Club". Everything's in the open.
This movie lays all the cards on the table, and says " This is the way it is.
" 【Ione Skye】Say Anything【John Cusack】 Say Anything - perfect in the small things..
Every once in a while
the movie gods smile, and when they do we get nearly perfect movies like Say Anything.
Now I'm hearing some rumblings from certain readers, saying " But Mike, how can any movie be nearly perfect? Have you lost all critical perspective and objectivity ?
". To those unenlightened few, I say ( with all due respect to the Knights
) 'Ni!'
. " Say Anything
" is one of the best in the teen romance genre, and quite possibly one of the best romance movies across the board.
The cast is spectacular, with the always interestingJohn Cusackand the thinking man's babeIone Skyeleading the way.
Cusack's Lloyd Dobler
is refreshingly likable, like that buddy you had in high schoolwho picked you up when your tire blew out after the game. He's smart, resourceful and fiercely loyal to his friends, at least the ones who make sense.
Lily Taylor
makes an unforgettable appearance asthe Joe-obsessed would-be songwriter, singing all 67 songs
written to this slacker prototype following their breakup. As Lloyd'sinterest,Ione Skyehas never looked better. Other actresses may have played Diane as the unattainable Ice Princess,
but Skye lets in enough vulnerability and genuine emotion for us to appreciate her. Their relationship ebbs and flows in an honest way, not in the cliched 'You must go after her', 'But what if she says no ?' mold of teen romances. If I had to sum up this movie in one word, it would have to be: Honest. Rent it anytime you feel the need for a pick-me-up, or if you're looking for a safe date movie that won't insult anyone's intelligence.
If you liked this movie as much as I do, then you won't be disappointed with other greatstories likeThe English PatientandAn Affair to Remember. In the teen to twenty-something category, I would also recommend Empire Records, Pointe Blank Range, Circle of Friends or Reality Bites.
You might also notice thatLloyd's sisteris played (very well) byJoan Cusak(John Cusaks real-life sister). Everyone in this film plays thier character excellently, especially the main few characters, played by John cusak, Ione Skye, John Mahoney, and Mimi Rogers
(as one of Lloyd's best friends). The best scene of this film, and I'm sure most people agree, is the scenewhere Lloyd try's to win back Dianeby playing " In Your Eyes
" byPeter Gabrieloutside her window from his 'boom box'. I hope you enjoy this film as much as I did.
If you're one of the unlucky people who have yet to see this movie, see it, soon !!
