Skylake-X は従来の Broadwell-E の流れをくむいわゆる正統後継CPU だ。
メインメモリーはクアッドチャンネルで、メモリー速度は DDR4-2400 から DDR4-2666 へ向上している。
CPU が持つ PCI Express 3.0 のレーン数も最大 44 レーン（Core i9-7800X と Core i9-7820X は 28 レーン）と従来の最大 40 レーン（Core i7-6800K は 28 レーン）から増えている。
Turbo Boost 2.0 の挙動を上回るクロックまで自動オーバークロックする、Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0（以下、TB3.0）も従来は 1 コアだけでしたが 2 コアまで適用されるようになった。また、新命令セットの Intel AVX512（オーバークロック時のオフセット機能も搭載）にも対応している。
一方で、Kaby Lake-X は TDP こそ 112W と Skylake-X より低いものの、メインメモリーはデュアルチャンネルまでで、L3 キャッシュも Core i7-7740X が 8MB、Core i5-7640X が 6MB とハイエンドデスクトップ PC の CPU というよりは、メインストリームの第7 世代 Core（開発コードネーム：Kaby Lake-S）と似ている。
