An Australian father. A Japanese mother. And children were born. We thought that by simply through everyday life, our children would naturally become bilingual. We thought that when they started speaking, they would naturally have a good command of English and Japanese. But in reality, that's not the case. From nine months old, they went to the nearby parks. Then off to childcare. From three years old, the older son went to the neigbourhood kindergarten. Their lifestyle is entirely in Japanese, even though their father speaks to them only in English from when they were born. The four-year-old son speaks Japanese with a Kansai accent. When his dad speaks English to him, he always replies in Japanese (even though he seems to understand....) What can we do??!!!
