Days of Doubt and Anxiety
I was born into a Christian family, so from a young age, God and Jesus Christ were close to me, and I naturally believed the existence.
In 2011, the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake, I was in the fifth grade. Around that time, I studied abroad until junior high school. However, when I returned to Japan in my third year of junior high, I struggled to keep up with classes, and I also faced the pressure of high school entrance exams. My family was not financially stable, so I felt that I had no choice but to get into a public high school.
This deeply affected my faith. I began to think, “Why is this so hard? Is God really there?” As I faced various problems, I grew increasingly pessimistic. I also remember complaining to God a lot.
Thankfully, I was accepted into a public high school, but these feelings stayed with me into my university years. Whenever I encountered difficulties—whether in relationships or finances—I thought that God wanted me to be unhappy or was deliberately putting me through suffering. Deep inside, I felt anger toward God. I was also overwhelmed by negative thoughts, such as believing that I was not loved, that God would not help me, and even wishing that I could disappear from this world.
After entering a university abroad, during my third year, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented me from returning abroad for six months. During that time, I received an invitation from a pastor to join a program at church. At that church, there was a program designed to help each person experience restoration through God’s love. It was a one-year program where we studied Christian doctrine, applied it to our lives, and shared our struggles and insights with others of the same gender.
For one year, I participated both online and in person, and through that training, I truly experienced personal restoration.
The Sovereignty of God

At the same time, this does not mean that only good things will happen. I came to understand that even painful, difficult, and unpleasant experiences are allowed within God’s sovereignty.
When I realized this, I saw that whenever I had faced problems in the past, I had become angry, thinking that God desired my unhappiness. But in reality, even through those difficulties, God was trying to teach me something and lead my immaturity toward growth.
I had been fixated on my own problems, praying mainly for an easier life and for good things to happen to me. But when I surrendered my life to God’s sovereignty, I learned that my life does not belong to me alone. As a result, I began to see more clearly for whom and for what I am living.
When I lived for my own happiness, I would become mentally overwhelmed when facing hardship and would complain to God. But as my life shifted to one lived for God, I became able to say, “Lord, please lead my life.”

This became possible because I came to believe that God loves me immensely and has a better plan than anything I could think of or desire.

From a human perspective, I once thought that a good life meant earning money, achieving success, and becoming well-known. But now I believe that I was created by God, called by name, and meant to live for Him—and that this is the greatest happiness for me.

Currently, I am engaged in sharing the words of the Bible, and for me, this is the best kind of life: living for God and for the people around me.

“And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” (2 Corinthians 5:15)

amen
