勉強したのは「TIME」2011.2.10に載っている記事です。最近 ネット上にこの記事がある のを知りました。長いと思うので2回に分けて書くことにしました。

Singularity
Singularity:技術の進歩があまりにも急速になりかつ深化して、人間の歴史と言う織物において(かつてない)重大な変化が生じる時。

そのような時が遠からず到来すると信じる人々をSingularitariansと呼ぶ。この記事はその代表格とも言える発明家・未来学者Raymond Kurzweilを中心に彼らの説を概ね肯定的に特集している。

Singularityを予測する根拠：Kurzweilはコンピューターの速度MIPS(millions of instruction　per second),the falling cost of manufacturing transistors,the rising clock speed of microprocessors等の主要な技術指標のグラフ(横軸はもちろん時間)を描いてみた。その結果グラフはすべて、これまでもそして将来予測も級数的に上昇していく曲線になった。(筆者注：つまり技術は単に高度化していくのではなく、その高度化する速度もだんだん増していく。)

Singularityとはどのような変化か？

Kurzweil believes that we're approaching a moment when computers will become intelligent, and not just intelligent but more intelligent than humans. When that happens, humanity — our bodies, our minds, our civilization — will be completely and irreversibly transformed. He believes that this moment is not only inevitable but imminent. According to his calculations, the end of human civilization as we know it is about 35 years away.コンピューターが知的になり、そして単に知的なだけでなく人間よりも知的になる時が近づいているとKurzeweiは信じている。その時が来ると、我々の肉体、心、文明は完全にそして不可逆的に変化するだろう。その時は不可避なだけでなく切迫していると彼は信じている。彼の計算によると我々が知っている人類の文明の最後は約35年後である。

The one thing all these theories have in common is the transformation of our species into something that is no longer recognizable as such to humanity circa 2011.  (Singularityによる変化には各論あるが)これらの各論に共通することは、われわれの種がもはや2011年頃の人類とは認識できない何かへと変化することである。
