National Highway No. 11 is a national highway from Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture to Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, via Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture.
It connects Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, to Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, where many branch offices are located, and Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, through Shikoku's largest industrial area, which extends to the east of Ehime Prefecture.
The area along the line generally overlaps with the area called Kita-Shikoku.
The main roads of various places that existed before the Edo period, such as the Sanuki Highway and the Shido Highway, are predecessors.
For Shikoku, which does not have a single-digit national highway, it is the youngest national road, and together with National Route 32, National Route 33, National Route 55, National Route 56, etc., it is the main artery of Shikoku.
It runs alongside the Takamatsu Expressway from Tokushima Prefecture to Kagawa Prefecture and the Matsuyama Expressway within Ehime Prefecture.
It passes through major cities in each prefecture such as Tokushima City, Naruto City, Takamatsu City, Sakaide City, Marugame City, Kanonji City, Shikoku Chuo City, Niihama City, Saijo City, Matsuyama City, etc. With a population of 2.08 million, 51% of Shikoku's population will be concentrated along this line.
In Kagawa Prefecture and Ehime Prefecture in particular, towns are developing along this road, and many local roadside stores, family restaurants, and electronics retailers are being built along the road, giving it to local residents. The impact is very large.
For this reason, there is heavy traffic throughout the entire line, and congestion is particularly noticeable in the three cities of Tokushima, Takamatsu and Matsuyama.
The traffic volume near Yoshinogawa Bridge in Tokushima City is about 85,000 vehicles / day (FY2003), the highest in Shikoku. In Takamatsu City, there is a two-lane highway (Takamatsu Expressway) despite the highway 11. Has three lanes on one side, and Matsuyama City has three lanes on one side in the center.<div style="text-align:left;"></div>
Furthermore, as of 2011, bypass roads are being constructed or planned in several places.
On the way, Sakurasanri, which runs from Saijo City in Ehime Prefecture (former Tanwara Town, Shukuwa County) to Toon City (former Kawauchi Town, Onsen County), is a mountain pass known as a famous cherry blossom spot, and has a climbing lane.
There are only mid-hill slopes at this point and only at Amano Pass and Hadate Pass (downbound) in Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture.
