 Keep in mind the student also has a monitor to see everything I'm doing on the computer. Like I say at 2:04, it's the Information and Computer Technology (ICT) class. I bought a drink for the student. However, at 4:22, total surprise is expressed when she says it's more like pudding and not a so-called "liquid" drink. Fortunately, she liked it. At 18:15 Kuro (pet) calls me to come play. At 27:00, I read and explain a paragraph from the Malpass study. At 34.06 , I prepare an IC recorder pen. At 34:46, I paraphrase an important point in the study. A funny moment at 36:30 as I try to figure out the maze of cables. At 43:24, I correct the student's sentence (homework) about an important point in the study.

I bring this up because I strongly believe that some students would LOVE this topic. That's my experience. But like I said, they're recent experiences. To be honest, I LOVE this new Japan. Now I can tell my sea stories. Here's their favorite. It's in the public domain now, but needless to say back then it was TOP SECRET. I served on the U.S.S. Midway stationed out of Yokosuka Navy Base and nuclear weapons were being brought into port. But the Japanese government was saying to the public they're not allowed. That even included nuclear-powered carriers. The word nuclear was taboo. And look what we have now. The nuclear-powered U.S.S. Gerald Ford is now stationed in Japan.応援クリック宜しくお願いします

So now I've gotta explain how this is related to teaching English before it gets deleted.In the past I would never mention my military service because it was a taboo subject. Anyone know that movie about the Kamikaze pilots called "Eien-no-Zero that came out a few years ago? Since then, I've been having numerous classes where the students enjoyed listening to my sea stories.Just one of the many changes occurring in Japan at the moment.I just wanted to know if anyone has had the same experience. Like looking for a needle in a haystack.Anyone a U.S. veteran living in Japan? I served at Yokosuka Navy Base ('78~'85).Asking cause I'm wondering if anyone ever uses Military as a topic for discussion.I do!

Ieyasu versus Miura Anjin

Ieyasu: We got a complaint that your class is too difficult to understand.Miura Anjin: I don’t understand. I was just talking about “critical thinking” skills. Ieyasu: That’s the problem. It’s too difficult for them to understand. Miura Anjin: Did you know that critical thinking skills are taught to kindergarten children in the U.S.? Ieyasu: This isn’t the U.S. Besides, what does critical thinking have to do with learning English? Miura Anjin: Well, lemme ask you this. Your son will be taking the college entrance exam in 2021. Right? Ieyasu: That’s right. So what! Miura Anjin: You’re working too hard. You need to read the newspaper more often. Questions based on critical thinking skills will be introduced in the college entrance exams in 2020. And that includes the English section. Ieyasu: (Silence)… I don’t care. We need to sell books. Just stick to the textbook. Miura Anjin: But I am. I’m just trying to change their learning from passive to active while still using the textbook. Ieyasu: Will you stop using those fancy words. All you need to do is entertain them. Miura Anjin: But I am entertaining them. You should see my gestures and facial expressions I’m using to make them laugh. Wait a minute! It sounds like you’re taking the student’s negative comment out of context because the student is stereotyping me, and the stereotype isn’t even correct. He probably said I sound like a college professor because he knows I have a Masters in Psychology, specialty Educational Psychology. Do you know what Educational Psychology is?Ieyasu: Yeah, a psychologist who treats people with mental illness.  Anyway, I’ll stop here cause I think you’re getting the message. It’s the salesperson versus the educational psychology practitioner with extensive knowledge of Japanese employess in a transnational corporation learning English. Two different worlds. Of course in the old days Ieyasu would’ve had Miura Anjin’s head chopped off. In today’s modern world Miura Anjin would simply get replaced by a non-Japanese that does what he/she is told.
