Everett ships ordered to assist with relief efforts

By Brian Kelly

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Shoup both left Naval Station Everett on a four-month-long deployment in mid-October. Tuesday, officials from the U.S. Seventh Fleet in Japan said the Lincoln and its strike group were being diverted from their deployments to the Indian Ocean.

The Everett-based aircraft carrier had been making a port visit to Hong Kong when the tsunamis, which have killed more than 50,000, hit Sunday.

The Lincoln, the world’s largest warship, has a crew of more than 5,000. The USS Shoup, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer also based in Everett, has a crew of approximately 380.

The Lincoln has a full medical department on board, as well as a squadron of SH-60B Seahawks from Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Two. The ship’s crew regularly undergoes mass-casualty and disaster training.

The Lincoln has previously been sent on humanitarian missions during its 17 years in service, twice while the ship was already underway.

The first during its maiden voyage in May 1991.

The carrier was on its way to the Indian Ocean to participate in Operation Desert Shield in Iraq when it was diverted to help with evacuation operations in the Philippines after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo.

And two years later, in October 1993, Pres. Clinton ordered the Nimitz-class carrier to the coast of Somalia to help with the United Nations’ relief efforts. Aircraft from the Lincoln flew patrols for four weeks over Mogadishu as part of Operation Restore Hope.

Other Navy assets are also being sent to help with the relief effort for the 11 countries that were devastated by Sunday’s tsunami waves.

P-3C Orion surveillance aircraft from Patrol Squadron 8, based at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, have also been deployed to help in search-and-rescue operations.

Although Whidbey Island Naval Air Station has three squadrons of P-3C aircraft, none will be sent to the area because none of those squadrons are on deployment, a base spokesman said.

The carrier’s strike groups includes the cruiser USS Shiloh, the destroyer USS Benfold, both based in San Diego, Calif., as well as the attack submarine USS Louisville, based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and the fast combat support ship USS Rainier, based in Bremerton.

"They’re on their way," said Rick Huling, spokesman for Navy Region Northwest.

The Navy has also ordered the ships of Expeditionary Strike Group 5 to the disaster area.

That group includes the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard and the amphibious ship USS Duluth. The two ships visited Everett in August as part of Seattle's Seafair celebration.
