私は今アピオで行われた職場の新入生19人の歓迎会から帰ってきたところである。彼
らは多くの素晴らしい出し物をしてくれた。かなり練習してきたらしく非常に素晴ら
しいものであった。しかしながら顔は幼く、先輩たちのようには綺麗ではなかった。
数年働くうちに綺麗になっていくのだと思う。人の顔は職場でプロとしてしっかり働
く中で造られて行くものだと思った。
I came home now from the welcome party for the 19 members of our hospital
held at Apio. The new members performed many wonderful attractions.
They were very wonderful as they had practiced many times. But the faces are
young and not so beautiful as like their senior. They shall be beautiful
I think that the people's face is made by their professional jobs in the work
place.

顔と言いうより風貌でしょうか。
平山郁夫が描いたシルクロードに暮らす長老の顔、あれこそ風貌というものだと思いました。この国ではああいう顔は今ではあまり見られなくなったんではないかと感じます。
Should we call it rather appearance than face?
I felt the face of the old man living in Silkroad is the very appearance.

若さはあっても美しさはこれから

私の毎日は90歳前後の認知力のない胃ろうなどをつけている患者さんと看護師や検査技師、クラークさん等の間で暮らしています。長老の顔は認知症や脳梗塞後の患者さん達からは得られませんが、その彼らを一生懸命診ている看護師さん達の顔を美しいと思ってみています。それに比べて新入生達は若さはあるが美しさはないなと実感した次第です。
