Disasters in the RegionJapan Earthquake and Tsunami 15 April 2011 - A 9.0-magnitude earthquake occurred on 11 March in Japan at 05:46:23 GMT, hitting the northeast coast of Honshu, Japan. The worst affected area is the east coast of Tohoku region. Tsunamis have caused devastation in the coastal areas of Tohoku and southern Hokkaido. Based on official Japanese government figures (5 April, 17:00 Tokyo time), 12 344 people are confirmed dead, 2 869 injured and 15 237 missing. There are now 163 607 evacuees.
