1980年1月28日、ニューヨークにて、カーター家の長男として生まれる。家族は5人兄弟。妹のBJ（Bobbie Jean）、Leslie、Angel、そしてAaron。ニックは9歳にしてステージ「オペラ座の怪人」に出演したが、彼の本当の夢はシンガーとして成功することだった。
　93年、フロリダ州オーランドの中学生だったニックは、あるオーディションで高校生だったA.J.、ハウィー.D.と出会い、その場で友達になりグループを結成することに。さらにそこにケヴィンとブライアンが合流して、ニックはボーカル・グループ、「バックストリート・ボーイズ」の最年少メンバーとなる。スクールツアーに始まり地道なプロモーションを積んだ後、アメリカにてリリースした1stシングル「ゴーイン・オン」は、全米セールスチャート69位という結果に終り、大きな注目を集めることができなかった。
　しかし、活躍の場をヨーロッパに求め、ドイツのセールスチャートで初登場4位を記録。半年経たずして、その歌声はヨーロッパに広がり、アルバムセールスは200万枚を突破。その人気はカナダにも飛び火した。
　そして、メンバーが一度は苦汁をなめたアメリカでの成功。 1stと2ndアルバムから選りすぐった曲を合わせ、アルバムセールスは600万枚を超えた。続く3rdアルバム「ミレニアム」は、「1999年アメリカで最も売れたアルバム」と認定され、世界的にもメガヒット。 3000万枚に届くセールスを記録することになった。世界の頂点を極めたかにみえたバックストリート・ボーイズであったが、その物語にはまだ続きがあった。
　2000年10月にリリースされた4thアルバム「ブラック・アンド・ブルー」では、一段と大人になった音楽性の幅を見せ付け、専用ジェット機で来日し11時間だけ滞在、日本のファンに「シェイプ・オブ・マイ・ハート」を届けた。翌年10月には初となるベストアルバム「グレイテスト・ヒッツ ?　チャプター・ワン」を発表。ここ日本だけで120万枚以上をセールスするモンスターアルバムとなった。 11月には念願の初来日コンサートが実現し、東京ドーム3日間を含む5公演23万5千枚のチケットが即日ソールドアウトし、社会現象とまでなった。
